Missing YouTube transcripts: captions, members-only videos, and access restrictions

Why is a YouTube transcript missing?
A missing result does not always mean that a video has no captions. ChannelScout distinguishes caption availability, access restrictions, and extraction failures so you can decide what to do next.
Open Library > Jobs, find the run, and expand its missing-transcript details. Check the individual video's reason before retrying or choosing Whisper.
The video is accessible but has no captions
YouTube may not provide an automatic or creator-uploaded caption track. A captions-only batch sets these videos aside instead of spending your Whisper allowance.
For accessible audio, Whisper can create a transcript within your plan's remaining job and minute budget. You choose whether to use it for background jobs. It is an additional transcription step, not a way to recover an existing YouTube caption file.
The video is members-only
A members-only video may require a paid membership at the creator's required tier. A ChannelScout subscription does not include that YouTube membership. A server-side extractor is not signed into your personal YouTube account, so your browser being able to play a video does not grant our server the same access.
Whisper does not bypass that restriction. If you can access a transcript and are authorized to use it, you can import the text or caption file into your Library. Learn more about YouTube channel memberships.
YouTube requires a login or age verification
These outcomes can be different from a paid membership requirement. YouTube may require the viewer to sign in, meet an age requirement, or complete account verification. A login-related extraction error is not evidence that a video is members-only.
ChannelScout does not currently sign its extraction servers into your personal YouTube account. Do not send support your Google password or browser cookies. If YouTube offers the transcript in your own eligible account, an authorized import can preserve the transcript without sharing your login.
See YouTube's explanation of age-restricted content.
The video is private, removed, or otherwise unavailable
A private video requires access granted by the owner. A deleted or unavailable video may no longer provide retrievable audio or captions. Repeated retries or more Whisper allowance will not restore access.
Job details show the reason received during extraction. When the underlying service gives only a generic unavailable response, we cannot reliably infer a more specific cause. The reason can also change later if the owner changes the video's settings.
Extraction failed or YouTube asked us to wait
Network failures, timeouts, and rate limits are unresolved extraction errors. They are not counted as proof of missing captions. A background job can retry and back off; a shared cooldown protects extraction capacity when YouTube throttles requests.
You can return later and inspect progress. Saved transcripts remain usable during cooldowns, and the browser does not need to remain open. See large-channel jobs and cooldowns.
Import a transcript you are authorized to use
Use Library > Import transcript to upload an SRT, VTT, or TXT file, or paste transcript text. Add a title, preview it, confirm your permission to use it, and save. You can also use the provided browser helper on a YouTube page where a transcript is already visible to you.
SRT and VTT preserve timestamps; plain text is labeled without timestamps. Imports remain private to your account, use no Whisper jobs or minutes, and count toward your transcript allowance. Importing does not unlock video playback or Clip Builder access, and it does not rewrite the historical result counts of an earlier batch job.
