[0:02] This is the CBS Evening News [music]
[0:07] with Dan Rather in New York and Connie
[0:10] Chung [music] in Washington.
[0:12] >> Good evening. Here on Capitol Hill, it's
[0:14] gave down and curtain up on the first
[0:16] Republican controlled Congress in four
[0:18] decades. The 104th Congress hit the
[0:21] House floor running and voting in a
[0:23] session that continued into the night.
[0:25] All of it under the eye of N. Gingrich,
[0:27] the new speaker of the house. Chief
[0:29] Washington correspondent Bob Chaffer
[0:31] begins our coverage.
[0:32] >> Morning.
[0:33] >> Good morning, Mr. Speaker. How are you
[0:34] all?

[0:55] Republicans wore the big smiles this
[0:57] time. Senators usually get most of the
[1:00] publicity, but today all eyes were on
[1:02] the House. Even the Senate's top
[1:04] Republican strolled over to see the rare
[1:07] case of a fellow Republican being
[1:09] escorted in to become speaker of the
[1:11] House. It brought a little gallows humor
[1:13] from the top house Democrat.
[1:15] >> As you might imagine, this is not a
[1:17] moment that I had been waiting for.
[1:20] >> But Gampard graciously called it a time
[1:22] to celebrate what is rare in other
[1:24] countries, a peaceful change of power.
[1:26] You are now my speaker and let the great
[1:30] debate begin.
[1:32] >> The often asserbic Gingrich seemed
[1:34] genu
