[0:02] We've got no captain and no first

[0:04] officer to replace him. Yeah, we do.

[0:05] >> This week on At the Movies, summer movie

[0:07] season gets off to a quick start. We've

[0:09] got the exclusive early review of J.J.

[0:11] Abrams Star Trek.

[0:13] >> But you will have your revenge. I'm

[0:15] coming for blood.

[0:16] >> Q Jackman takes its claws out in X-Men

[0:19] Origins Wolverine.

[0:20] >> I'll be on my best page.

[0:22] >> Really?

[0:22] >> Yes.

[0:23] >> Matthew McConna is the king of romantic

[0:25] comedies. Will the ghost of girlfriend's

[0:27] past be better than the rest? You better

[0:29] do something about this woman or I will.

[0:32] >> Plus, Beyonce Nolles goes headto head

[0:34] with a woman who is obsessed.

[0:40] Bring together a special team

[0:43] with special privileges.

[0:47] Join me, but you will have your revenge.

[0:52] >> I want new ones.

[0:55] And what do you want them to say?

[0:58] Wolverine.

[1:00] >> A comic book icon seeks revenge in X-Men

[1:03] Origins. Wolverine. I'm Ben Lions from E

[1:06] Entertainment.

[1:07] >> And I'm Ben Manowitz from Turner Classic

[1:08] Movies. How do you keep a longunning

[1:10] film franchise fresh? Well, you go back

[1:13] to the beginning. It's what our first

[1:14] movie has done. X-Men Origins:

[1:17] Wolverine. Hugh Jackman sheds his Oscar

[1:20] tap shoes for those familiar claws

[1:22] playing Wolverine for the fourth time.

[1:24] But in this installment, we get the

[1:26] backstory. We're going to make you

[1:28] indestructible. First, we're going to

[1:31] have to destroy you. That you will be

[1:33] able to withstand virtually anything.

[1:36] It's called adamantium. You're going to

[1:38] have to embrace the other side,

[1:41] become the animal.

[1:43] >> In the previous films, we know Wolverine

[1:45] is essentially ageless. Here we learn he

[1:48] was born before the Civil War, a sickly

[1:50] child who didn't know his own mutant

[1:52] gifts until an adolescent act of violent

[1:55] revenge forces him from the house with

[1:57] his older brother, who we learn is also

[2:00] a mutant, played by Lev Shrivever. They

[2:02] fight side by side in the Civil War, in

[2:05] World Wars one and two, and then in

[2:07] Vietnam before a betrayal makes them

[2:10] mortal enemies.

[2:11] >> Why? You don't call.

[2:14] You don't write.

[2:17] How else am I supposed to get your

[2:19] attention?

[2:23] >> Wolverine's backstory was good stuff,

[2:25] but after the falling out with Shriber,

[2:27] the story loses its center and it gets

[2:29] wobbly, losing credibility. After that

[2:32] medical procedure we showed you makes

[2:34] Wolverine almost indestructible. The

[2:36] army officer in charge, played by Danny

[2:38] Houston, wants him dead. He tries twice

[2:41] before announcing out of the blue that

[2:43] he has a special gun that will do the

[2:45] job. Well, then use it right away.

[2:48] >> Where's Victor? Come back to base.

[2:51] >> I'll explain everything. We'll take

[2:52] Victor down together.

[2:53] >> Wrong answer. After I kill Victor, I'm

[2:56] coming for you.

[3:00] You honor the animal, Colonel.

[3:03] >> You got it.

[3:04] >> An hour in, it really rushes fairly

[3:07] incoherently to the end. I am prepared

[3:09] to suspend disbelief often in a fantasy

[3:11] film like this, but not all the time.

[3:14] Skip it.

[3:15] >> Ben, what I love about the original

[3:17] X-Men franchise is that these are

[3:19] mutants who are not clearly defined by

[3:20] good and evil. There's some ambiguity to

[3:22] it, and they're also amongst us in the

[3:24] real world. They're side by side with

[3:26] human beings. Here, there's really none

[3:28] of that. It feels so isolated in its own

[3:30] universe. And I think that's really lost

[3:32] from the spirit of the X-Men franchise.

[3:34] You know, those first two that you

[3:35] talked about, the first two X-Men, they

[3:37] were really character-driven movies, and

[3:39] I like the moral ambiguity in them.

[3:41] These last two, the previous one

[3:42] directed by Brett Ratner and this one

[3:44] directed by Gavin Hood. Again, we've

[3:46] lost that sort of sense of character.

[3:48] >> So many of the supporting characters

[3:49] here are simply introduced to see if

[3:50] audiences will want to see another

[3:52] spin-off movie with Ryan Reynolds's

[3:54] character. Deadpool, he's in one scene,

[3:56] and Gambit, who's a really cool

[3:58] character from the X-Men franchise. They

[3:59] throw him in here not for the sake of

[4:01] the story in this movie, but just to

[4:03] introduce them to audiences to see if

[4:05] there'll be a spin-off and it felt

[4:06] forced.

[4:06] >> I did like his romance with with Lynn

[4:08] Collins and uh and that sort of provides

[4:10] the motivation for his revenge. I'm a

[4:12] little over revenge as a theme for a

[4:14] lead character. Uh but of course, look,

[4:16] a lot of women are going to go to this

[4:17] movie and they're going to like it

[4:18] because I'll be honest, I'm as

[4:19] heterosexual as the next guy. But when

[4:21] Hugh Jackman walks out there without his

[4:23] shirt on in the Canadian Rockies, you

[4:24] think, "Okay, that's a sexy guy."

[4:26] Amazing to think we last saw him host

[4:28] the Oscars and here he is now for the

[4:30] fourth time as Logan Wolverine and he

[4:32] can do both musical theater and a huge

[4:34] action movie. So to his credit, he's

[4:36] definitely a true performer.

[4:37] >> He did a nice job, but overall not not

[4:39] what I was looking for.

[4:40] >> Yeah, definitely disappointed by this.

[4:41] I'm going to say skip it. Next movie. No

[4:43] stranger to the contrived romantic

[4:45] comedy, Matthew McConna stars as Connor

[4:48] me in Ghost of Girlfriend's Path.

[4:50] >> It's not going to work. Connor is a

[4:51] celebrity and fashion photographer who

[4:53] has lived his life dating every gorgeous

[4:55] woman that has crossed his path. When

[4:57] his younger brother, played by Breen

[4:59] Meyer, gets engaged, he reluctantly

[5:01] attends the wedding. To his surprise,

[5:03] his one true love, childhood friend

[5:05] Jenny, played by Jennifer Garner, is the

[5:07] maid of honor.

[5:08] >> You know, people were taking bets on

[5:09] whether or not you'd even show up.

[5:11] >> I miss my kid brother's wedding.

[5:13] >> See, that's what I said. The whole thing

[5:14] you do is just to get insecure women to

[5:16] sleep with you. Deep down, you're a big

[5:18] sweetheart. Oh, look who's got me

[5:20] pegged.

[5:21] >> Ghost of Girlfriend's Past is really a

[5:23] romantic comedy version of A Christmas

[5:24] Carol. Connor is visited by his dead

[5:26] uncle, played by Michael Douglas. Plus,

[5:28] the ghost of girlfriend's past, present,

[5:30] and future.

[5:31] >> Hi, Connor.

[5:33] >> Who are you?

[5:33] >> Oh, I'm like the ghost of girlfriend's

[5:34] past. I tickle a little.

[5:37] >> They take him on a journey through his

[5:39] past relationship mistakes and how they

[5:41] could affect his future. It's a tired

[5:43] premise with some even weaker gags.

[5:52] Let's go. Oh god.

[5:55] >> Oh my god. The K.

[5:56] >> Did you see what happened?

[5:58] >> Here we go.

[5:59] >> No.

[6:00] >> Let's face it, there's nothing

[6:01] inventive, creative, or different here.

[6:04] Douglas channeling the great producer

[6:05] Robert Evans and Emma Stone as the

[6:07] spunky braceface ghost had me mildly

[6:10] amused. But it wasn't enough to keep me

[6:12] really interested, especially since I

[6:14] didn't feel any of the chemistry between

[6:15] MCA and Garner. You can skip Ghost of

[6:18] Girlfriend's Past. Really silly movie.

[6:20] >> No chemistry at all between them. We're

[6:22] supposed to believe that a woman of

[6:23] Jennifer Garner's intellect and

[6:25] professionalism and class is going to

[6:27] find anything attractive about Matthew

[6:29] McConna other than the fact that he's

[6:31] obviously physically attractive.

[6:32] >> There's nothing likable about his

[6:34] character at all. He slept with all the

[6:35] bridesmaids. He hits on the bride to

[6:38] be's mother. He's just really a scummy

[6:40] guy, which doesn't come off as funny

[6:42] even in this movie.

[6:43] >> Bridesmaid sort of very stereotypically

[6:45] trashy. I think you're right. Michael

[6:47] Douglas, Emma Stone of the group that

[6:49] they were the best. Very little. Very

[6:52] little here. Very typical Matthew

[6:53] McConn.

[6:54] >> Totally. And if you look back at some of

[6:55] his previous romantic comedies, it's

[6:57] right up there with Fool's Gold and

[6:58] Failure to Launch as being pretty lousy.

[7:00] I mean, I enjoyed How to Lose a Guy in

[7:02] 10 Days a little bit more than those

[7:03] films. But why he keeps doing these

[7:05] movies, I don't know. Movie, I think,

[7:07] really uh uh Did the impossible is that

[7:09] it makes Failure to Launch look like The

[7:12] Thin Man. Uh, it it is neither romantic

[7:15] nor funny, which I think are really key

[7:16] elements of a romantic comedy. Well

[7:18] said.

[7:18] >> Uh, if you haven't guessed by now, I

[7:20] think you should skip Ghosts of

[7:22] Girlfriend's Past. Coming up next, one

[7:24] of the most anticipated movies of the

[7:26] year. We've got the early review of Star

[7:28] Trek.

[7:29] >> And later, Beyonce Nolles goes

[7:31] headtohead with her husband Stalker and

[7:33] Obsessed.

[7:36] >> May I help you?

[7:36] >> Hi, I need to start saving on car

[7:38] insurance.

[7:39] >> Money a bit tight? Yeah, I've had to cut

[7:41] back, sell some stuff like his watch.

[7:45] >> We can help you save because we

[7:47] instantly compare your Progressive

[7:48] Direct rate with rates from other top

[7:55] >> This means I can buy my watch back.

[7:57] >> Oh, this watch?

[7:57] >> Yeah. Not for sale.

[8:17] months. Roundup extended control.

[8:20] >> Excuse me. Eyes up here. They're a

[8:22] little large, but that's okay cuz I have

[8:23] a great bra. The side smoothing

[8:25] collection from Plex Secrets. Full

[8:27] support has never looked so good. Admit

[8:29] it. I look good.

[8:31] >> Plex. Who knows you like we do. When the

[8:33] girls are happy, I'm happy.

[8:36] >> Three years ago, Comcast made history

[8:56] Connect with Comcast. Home phone service

[8:59] starts at less than $25 a month.

[9:02] Comcast future ready.

[9:28] department. Grab life by the throttle at

[9:30] Beaverton motorcycles, a highway 217

[9:33] across from Washington Square.

[9:36] >> You will always be a child of two worlds

[9:39] and fully capable of deciding your own

[9:42] destiny. The question you face is which

[9:45] path will you choose?

[9:47] >> Next up is the highly anticipated Star

[9:50] Trek. It opens next week, so this is an

[9:52] early review. The 11th Star Trek movie

[9:54] marks the first for writer, producer,

[9:56] and director J.J. Abrams, who with the

[9:59] help of a young and relatively unknown

[10:00] cast, attempts to redefine the popular

[10:03] science fiction franchise. Here we get

[10:05] the origin story. It begins with the

[10:07] birth of Captain James Tiberius Kirk,

[10:09] the character made famous by William

[10:11] Shatner. At a crossroads in his life, a

[10:13] beaten up and grownup Kirk, played pitch

[10:16] perfectly by Chris Pine, is challenged

[10:18] to make something of his life by the

[10:19] current captain of the Enterprise,

[10:21] played by Bruce Greenwood.

[10:23] >> Your father was captain of the starship

[10:24] for 12 minutes.

[10:27] He saved 800 lives, including your

[10:30] mothers and yours.

[10:33] >> I dare you to do better.

[10:35] >> Pine brings something of his own to the

[10:36] iconic Kirk. A confident swagger and a

[10:38] self- assured enthusiasm for the role.

[10:40] As does Zachary Quinzo, who plays Mr.

[10:42] Spotter than me.

[10:43] >> We are traveling at warp speed. How did

[10:45] you manage to beam aboard this ship?

[10:47] >> You're the genius. You figure it out.

[10:48] >> As acting captain of this vessel, I

[10:49] order you to answer the question.

[10:51] >> Well, I'm not telling acting captain.

[10:54] They're forced to unite to stop the evil

[10:56] Nero, a Romulan warrior menacingly

[10:58] played by a really unrecognizable Eric

[11:01] Bana. On a quest for revenge, she first

[11:03] attempts to destroy Planet Vulcan, Spock

[11:06] Home, and then Planet Earth. With an

[11:08] accessible storyline for movie fans not

[11:10] familiar with the world of the

[11:11] franchise, Abrams is able to capture the

[11:13] spirit of Star Trek. Add to the mix

[11:15] first rate special effects, and what's

[11:17] left is an event movie. Remember, the

[11:21] Enterprise won't be able to beam you

[11:22] back until you turn off that drill.

[11:26] >> Good luck.

[11:30] >> Star Trek has moments of great drama,

[11:32] action, and comedy, all while delivering

[11:34] an intense science fiction experience. I

[11:36] was very pleased with the latest Star

[11:38] Trek, and I had high hopes for it. You

[11:40] should see it. You mentioned the special

[11:41] effects. I I actually didn't love the

[11:43] special effects and I thought the movie

[11:45] uh is being uh marketed in a sort of

[11:47] puzzling way because you look at those

[11:49] trailers on television and you think

[11:51] this is really a special effects driven

[11:53] summer popcorn movie.

[11:54] >> I think they're disappointing. They

[11:55] don't just dominate the story and the

[11:56] characters at play. I think they

[11:58] compliment them more than anything.

[11:59] >> Yeah, I certainly wasn't impressed with

[12:00] them as you were. Let's put it like

[12:01] that. Uh but that said, I think this is

[12:04] a totally character-driven film with

[12:06] five exceptionally cast people, the sort

[12:09] of core members of the enterprise. I

[12:11] thought they were all terrific. Led by

[12:13] Chris Pine. Uh, and I think the story

[12:15] really, really works and I'm very

[12:17] pleased that it's not special effects

[12:18] driven.

[12:18] >> Well, you really see why Star Trek is so

[12:20] special to so many people. You and I are

[12:22] not self-proclaimed Trekies or Trekers,

[12:24] but you really understand the mythology

[12:26] of the franchise from this movie. And I

[12:28] think J.J. Abrams walks the line

[12:30] gracefully between honoring the original

[12:32] series and introducing the pop culture

[12:35] movie masses to these characters.

[12:37] >> Yeah, I think it's going to be very

[12:38] accessible for people who are not big

[12:40] Star Trek fans. No question. I do want

[12:41] to talk about Chris Pine in particular

[12:43] because when you play somebody like

[12:45] Captain Kirk who's been played by

[12:47] William Shatner, so easy to fall into

[12:49] the trap of mimicking Shatner, but he

[12:51] does capture sort of the essence of

[12:54] Kirk, a guy who is driven, who is

[12:56] ambitious, uh who is funny, who is

[12:58] egotistical. He makes Kirk his own. I

[13:00] think

[13:01] >> the same goes for Quinto as Spock. And

[13:02] it's interesting he has lots of scenes

[13:04] opposite the original Mr. Spock, Leonard

[13:06] Nemoy, who is not relegated to a vanity

[13:08] cameo here, but is actually an integral

[13:10] part of the story.

[13:11] >> Yeah, I thought it was great to see

[13:12] Nemoy. I thought Quinto was good. As I

[13:14] said, I thought they were all good. I

[13:16] think you should see Star Trek. To get

[13:31] >> I must say, you were great last night

[13:33] and I really appreciate it. I just hope

[13:35] you don't feel cheapened because I

[13:36] booked my room early and got a great

[15:01] >> Why didn't you call me back today?

[15:03] >> We had a 10, but she didn't leave a

[15:04] number.

[15:05] >> Is she pretty?

[15:06] >> Pretty plain.

[15:07] >> It is such a pleasure to meet you, Mrs.

[15:09] Charles.

[15:10] >> Hi.

[15:10] >> You said she was playing. That girl may

[15:12] be a lot of things, but she ain't

[15:13] playing.

[15:14] >> It's been 22 years since Glen Close

[15:16] stalked Michael Douglas in Fatal

[15:18] Attraction. And though the makers of

[15:19] Obsessed won't call this a remake, it is

[15:22] essentially the same story. The stars

[15:24] here are Idris Elba, Alli Larder, and

[15:26] playing the beautiful wife back home,

[15:29] Beyonce Nolles. Elba plays a successful

[15:32] financial planner. Larter playing a temp

[15:34] at his firm sets her tempress sights on

[15:36] him. It's almost as if she's obsessed

[15:40] with him. But despite a modicum of

[15:42] tension, each scene still feels like a

[15:44] building block toward a predetermined

[15:46] end.

[15:48] >> Lisa, what are you doing in my house?

[15:51] Huh?

[15:52] >> Sheriff.

[15:55] Derek, I'm going to call you back.

[15:58] >> I honestly thought the whole first 85

[16:00] minutes were scripted to allow Beyonce

[16:02] to deliver that line, and it got a

[16:05] reaction in the theater, but it's all a

[16:06] cheap, manipulative, and formulaic ruse.

[16:09] Ela Larder are actually pretty good.

[16:11] Beyonce though strikes one note

[16:13] throughout. Obsessed opened last weekend

[16:15] and it did surprisingly well, taking the

[16:17] number one slot at the box office. It's

[16:19] interesting to note the studio refused

[16:20] to screen it for Ben and I in time to

[16:22] tape last weekend's show. Now we know

[16:25] why you should skip Obsessed.

[16:27] >> Ben, it's always problematic when a

[16:28] thriller builds to that climactic moment

[16:31] in order to make the audience laugh.

[16:33] Something's wrong here. And that's what

[16:34] happens with that final girl fight.

[16:36] Laughably awful. You want to think that

[16:38] this movie is so bad that it's good and

[16:40] it ends up just being bad. A silly,

[16:42] contrived film.

[16:43] >> The characters make some really, really

[16:45] puzzling choices. Uh Idris Ela is called

[16:48] by Beyonce Nolles and he can tell she's

[16:49] in a fight with Ali Larder. A fight that

[16:51] could well end in her death. And Idris

[16:53] Ela hangs up the phone and specifically

[16:55] dials the detective they talked to as if

[16:57] he's going to hold for her to come to

[16:58] the phone. 911. Your wife loopholes in

[17:01] the movie. They begin to add up after a

[17:03] while. You mentioned that Beyonce, who's

[17:05] also an executive producer on this, is

[17:06] the one who plays it at one note

[17:08] throughout. I think the same is true for

[17:09] Ela and Lauder. Ally Lauder looks

[17:11] fantastic. She's no Rebecca Deou in uh

[17:14] The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, a far

[17:16] scarier movie. And Idris Elbow is far

[17:18] better than the material. Here he plays

[17:19] it really flat. Doesn't add anything to

[17:21] the film at all.

[17:22] >> He's a terrific actor. Needs to pick

[17:23] better material.

[17:24] >> If you haven't wasted your money

[17:25] already, please don't. Skip obsessed.

[17:28] Originally scheduled for a 2D release,

[17:31] the animated Battle for Terra has been

[17:33] revamped and is now ready for the world

[17:34] to see in 3D. Set in the future, Terra

[17:37] is a cautionary tale about an alien

[17:39] planet targeted for invasion by the last

[17:41] remaining human beings in the universe,

[17:43] looking to call a new planet home after

[17:45] Earth's destruction.

[17:46] >> My plan, Mr. President, is the only way

[17:48] to salvage our species. We are dying. We

[17:54] are the last relics of humanity. The

[17:57] future depends on us.

[17:59] >> That's Brian Cox voicing General Hemer,

[18:01] determined to annihilate the peaceful

[18:03] aliens of terror. Their only hope for

[18:05] survival lies with a young girl named

[18:07] Mala, voiced by Evan Rachel Wood, on a

[18:09] quest to rescue her kidnapped father.

[18:11] She strikes a forbidden relationship

[18:13] with Lieutenant Jim Stanton, voiced by

[18:15] Luke Wilson. The human and the alien are

[18:17] each trying to save their respective

[18:19] races before it's too late.

[18:21] >> Hold tight. Okay, this could be a bumpy

[18:23] ride.

[18:25] >> WHY ARE THEY DOING THIS?

[18:27] >> FIRE AT THAT SHIP.

[18:28] >> UH, time to go.

[18:30] >> RETURN FIRE.

[18:32] >> IT'S A TRAP. WHOSE SIDE ARE YOU ON? Us

[18:35] or that?

[18:37] >> Terra tackles some ambitious

[18:38] adult-minded themes such as civic duty,

[18:41] free will, and the future of humanity.

[18:43] Yet stumbles mightily, largely in part

[18:45] due to its lackluster animation and the

[18:47] computerenerated Citizens of Terra all

[18:50] look very similar and are saddled with

[18:52] uninspired voiceover work from the

[18:54] star-studded cast. I don't think younger

[18:56] or older audiences will be interested,

[18:58] so you can skip Battle for Terror. Yeah,

[19:00] I actually had trouble following which

[19:03] Tyrion was which. And I guess that is

[19:05] simply the animation not popping off the

[19:08] screen. It did not look as good as many

[19:10] of the recent animated movies that we've

[19:12] had in the earlier part of this year or

[19:14] last year.

[19:14] >> We get spoiled by monsters and aliens

[19:16] and Bolt and there's really something to

[19:18] having a rich and colorful pallet for

[19:21] which to tell a story. And here it

[19:22] doesn't have that. So it's immediately

[19:23] off to a bad start.

[19:24] >> Yeah. There's a moment early on when the

[19:27] humans come to terror and the Terrans

[19:29] are clearly believers in a in their own

[19:32] gods and they think that this is a

[19:34] religious experience and they're they're

[19:35] shouting take me take me and of course

[19:37] in the end uh they're killed and I

[19:39] thought oh this is going to be sort of a

[19:41] a scathing analysis of religious belief

[19:44] but then that really went nowhere at

[19:46] all.

[19:46] >> No, it resorts to trying to be a

[19:48] commercial movie and have these

[19:49] interesting characters that don't really

[19:51] flesh out some of those more

[19:52] adult-minded themes. Yeah, you know,

[19:54] Ben, I wanted to like this movie, but in

[19:55] the end, I think you need to skip Battle

[19:57] for Terror.

[19:58] >> Coming up next, my number one movie of

[20:00] 2008 with more than 3 hours of extra

[20:02] features. Plus, Clint Eastwood in one of

[20:05] my all-time favorite war films. It's all

[20:07] in our DVD out now session.

[20:09] >> I'm an American. I don't even know why

[20:11] the hell I'm here.

[20:14] >> I'm so nervous. I can't believe the test

[20:17] is this week.

[20:19] >> Can you hold on a sec?

[20:20] >> Say what you need to say.

[20:23] Thanks, Mom.

[20:24] >> A card. It's the biggest little thing

[20:26] you can do.

[20:27] >> All has more discounts than you can

[20:29] imagine. For anti-lock brakes, for safe

[20:31] driving, airbags, ensuring your car and

[20:34] home, anti- theft devices. Let's see.

[20:37] New cars, people over 65, good students,

[20:40] emergency medical.

[20:42] >> We've got lots of great options. I I

[20:44] think you're really going to

[20:46] >> This one just came on the market. It's a

[20:48] two bed.

[20:50] I've got good evil skills. I'm good with

[20:52] people.

[20:52] >> You're hired, buddy.

[20:53] >> What? Wait.

[20:56] >> Can I help you?

[20:56] >> Snack wrap.

[20:57] >> What kind, sir?

[21:01] >> All of them?

[21:02] >> McDonald's snack wraps. Chipotle

[21:03] barbecue, ranch, and honey mustard with

[21:05] grilled or crispy all-white meat

[21:07] chicken. We've got all the flavors. The

[21:08] decision is all yours.

[21:21] Water glass $5.

[21:25] Energy saving bulb $4.

[21:30] Reusable bag $2.

[21:34] Helping your dad become a better man.

[21:37] Priceless.

[21:38] >> There are some things money can't buy.

[21:39] For everything else, there's credit and

[21:41] debit. Mastercard.

[21:42] >> I'll send you a postcard. Rent me a

[21:44] postcard from everywhere.

[21:46] >> Time to take a look at DVDs out now. My

[21:48] favorite film of 2008, The Curious Case

[21:51] of Benjamin Button is my pick this week.

[21:53] This Criterion Collection Special

[21:54] Edition features three hours of bonus

[21:57] features, focusing on the cutting edge

[21:59] and creative techniques used by director

[22:01] David Fincher and his special effects

[22:03] team to span 60 years in the lives of

[22:05] both Brad Pitt and Cape Blanch. The way

[22:08] in which they constructed Pit's facial

[22:09] expressions to match them to the bodies

[22:11] of smaller actors working with

[22:13] essentially giant blue socks on their

[22:15] heads worked seamlessly, brilliantly in

[22:18] fact, and will be what the movie is most

[22:20] remembered for. My DVD pick comes from

[22:22] the Turner Classic Movies Greatest

[22:23] Classic Films collection. Four World War

[22:26] II films are included, but one in

[22:28] particular always gets my attention.

[22:30] Clint Eastwood and Richard Burton in

[22:33] Where Eagles Dare. Eastwood, playing a

[22:35] strong, silent American officer on a

[22:37] British mission to infiltrate a Nazi

[22:39] castle in the Bavarian Alps, nods,

[22:42] grins, and scowls his way to making this

[22:45] one of my favorite World War II

[22:46] thrillers. It all leads to a memorable

[22:48] final scene without a shot being fired.

[22:51] Burton with Eastwood watching silently,

[22:53] of course, offers a Nazi spy a choice.

[22:56] Death or public humiliation. It's a

[22:59] wonderfully climactic moment in an

[23:01] underrated film. So, both the TCM

[23:04] greatest classic films collection, World

[23:06] War II, Battlefront Europe, and The

[23:08] Curious Case of Benjamin Button will be

[23:10] in stores this Tuesday.

[23:11] >> Want to know what you can't miss this

[23:12] weekend? Stay tuned for my three to see,

[23:15] which includes three Oscar winners, a

[23:17] heavyweight champ, and most importantly,

[23:20] Baby Ducks.

[23:52] new cars, people over 65, good students,

[25:57] >> All right, let's recap the movies on

[25:58] this week's show. We both say you can

[26:00] skip X-Men, Origins, Wolverine, and you

[26:03] can also skip Ghosts of Girlfriend's

[26:05] Past. We both say you should see Star

[26:07] Trek when it opens next week. And we

[26:09] agree that you can skip Obsessed and you

[26:11] can skip Battle for Terra. Tough week at

[26:13] the movies, buddy.

[26:14] >> Yeah, still love going to the movies.

[26:16] Love talking about them, but this was a

[26:17] rough week. No question. But thankfully,

[26:20] there is still some good stuff out in

[26:22] theaters. My three to see this week

[26:24] starts with the Russell Crow, Ben

[26:25] Affleck, Helen Miran political

[26:27] journalism drama, State of Play. It's a

[26:29] rather realistic and thoughtful

[26:30] examination of the ethical line print

[26:32] journalists walk every day in doing work

[26:34] we seem eager to dismiss and seldom

[26:37] praise. At number two, James Tobach's

[26:39] documentary Tyson. The only subject

[26:42] interviewed is Mike Tyson himself, but

[26:44] this is a very well-rounded assessment

[26:46] of the former champ and convicted

[26:48] rapist. Believe whatever you like about

[26:50] Tyson, but he is a remarkably

[26:52] introspective, thoughtful, and candid

[26:54] subject. And at number one, the Disney

[26:57] nature film Earth. This is a wildlife

[26:59] documentary on steroids. It's really

[27:02] hard to imagine seeing a more visually

[27:04] arresting film this year. And it also

[27:06] includes moments of really creative

[27:08] storytelling. This I don't say often, I

[27:11] was sorry when Earth was over.

[27:13] >> All right. Well, that's it for now.
