[0:00] 7:30 tonight

[0:02] >> from around the world and from CBS News

[0:04] headquarters in New York. This is the

[0:07] CBS Evening News with Bob Schiffer. Good

[0:11] evening. The jury in the Atlanta murder

[0:12] trial of Wayne Williams is apparently

[0:14] near a conclusion in its deliberations.

[0:16] We have a report from Bruce Hall in

[0:18] Atlanta.

[0:20] After meeting behind the closed doors of

[0:22] the courtroom most of the day, the jury

[0:24] sent a note to Judge Clarence Cooper

[0:26] saying they have reached a verdict in

[0:28] one case, but not in a second case.

[0:30] Judge Cooper told them to continue, and

[0:48] courtroom rather than the normal jury

[0:50] room in order to have access to the

[0:52] nearly 2,000 exhibits that have been

[0:54] presented in this 9-week long trial.

[0:57] Williams has been charged with the

[0:58] killings of Jimmy Ray Payne and

[1:00] Nathaniel Kater. There have been no

[1:02] indictments in the other killings that

[1:03] spread over the Atlanta metropolitan

[1:05] area over a 2-year period. But the case

[1:07] is being watched closely by several

[1:09] police officials, including Dicab County

[1:11] Public Safety Director Dick Han, who

[1:14] must decide if he is going to bring

[1:15] additional charges against Williams.

[1:17] >> The best two cases from the review that

[1:21] I have seen so far are the Baltazar case

[1:24] and uh the Barrett case wo
