[0:00] the sweep at the hands of the Dbacks

[0:01] with an 11 to5 win in Arizona last

[0:04] night. But the Marlins are still seven

[0:05] games behind the Braves in the NL East.

[0:10] >> Someone's got to do the job and we got

[0:11] to do the job if we expect to stay in

[0:13] this thing.

[0:13] >> I think it's time for us to uh really

[0:15] pick it up and I'm hoping we uh we can

[0:18] get hot. Hopefully the teams in front of

[0:19] us uh cool down a little and we can make

[0:21] up some ground.

[0:23] >> The Heat added the final piece to their

[0:25] back court today, signing free agent

[0:26] guard Damon Jones. The 6'3 point guard

[0:29] averaged seven points per game and 5.8

[0:31] assists for Milwaukee last season.

[0:35] >> A true point guard, not just uh a two

[0:40] guard trapped in a point guard's body. I

[0:42] can run a basketball team and um you

[0:45] know, I'm able to just be a total

[0:47] leader.

[0:49] >> And that'll do it for sports. Back to

[0:50] you.

[0:51] >> Okay, Lindsay. Thanks. And here's a look

[0:52] at this week's cultural calendar. In

[0:54] Broward County, Flamco in the sun, 2004

[0:57] is Saturday night at the University

[0:58] Center for the Performing Arts in Fort

[0:59] Lauderdale.

[1:00] >> In Miami Dade, if you're a Brazilian

[1:02] music lover, you can head to Margaret

[1:03] Pace Park Sunday night to hear Biba

[1:05] Gabberto perform in a free concert. And

[1:08] that is our report for now. We thank you

[1:10] very much for watching.

[1:53] jobs. Dismal numbers in July, the second

[1:56] month in a row, a jobs problem becoming

[1:58] a potential political problem again for

[2:01] the president.

[2:02] The war on terror. Is al-Qaeda still

[2:05] plotting an attack on American targets.

[2:08] The US thinks a man arrested in London

[2:10] may know.

[2:12] Decision 2004. A controversial ad on

[2:15] John Kerry's Vietnam records. Ads such

[2:18] as these by independent groups helping

[2:20] both candidates avoid campaign finance

[2:22] laws.

[2:24] And case study, what do NASCAR pit stops

[2:27] have to do with saving lives? More than

[2:29] you may think.

[2:34] >> From NBC News World Headquarters in New

[2:37] York, this is NBC Nightly News with Tom

[2:40] Brothal.

[2:42] >> Good evening. Jobs are a big issue in

[2:44] this presidential election campaign. And

[2:46] tonight, a small number is getting major

[2:49] attention. Analysts had estimated that

[2:51] the American economy would add more than

[2:53] 200,000 jobs in July, but they were off

[2:56] by more than 80%. Only 32,000 jobs were

[3:01] added, although officially unemployment

[3:03] dropped a tenth of a percent. The stock

[3:05] market took another sharp turn down on

[3:08] the news, and there are worries that

[3:10] this is a sign the American economy is

[3:12] staying soft. Here's NBC's Anne

[3:15] Thompson.

[3:17] >> The anemic jobs report stunned the

[3:19] experts who saw improving factory orders

[3:22] and growing consumer confidence as

[3:24] reasons to expect a stronger labor

[3:26] market. But today's report is now

[3:29] igniting fears that the slowdown

[3:31] described as a soft patch in the economy

[3:33] may be something more serious.

[3:35] >> At a very minimum, we need to see

[3:37] consistent job growth of 150,000 per

[3:39] month. If we don't get that, we're not

[3:41] getting the income gains that we need to

[3:42] sustain consumer spending and the

[3:44] economy going forward.

[3:45] >> Adding to the concerns, the sky-high

[3:47] price of oil closing just under $44 a

[3:50] barrel, seeping into all aspects of the

[3:53] economy.

[3:55] It threatens to dramatically push up

[3:57] home heating oil prices and trucking

[3:59] costs, putting
