[0:00] Our guest making his first Sunday
[0:02] morning interview appearance in six
[0:03] months. The number two man in our
[0:05] government, Vice President Al Gore. And
[0:07] in our political roundt, the American
[0:10] president, money train, Oliver Stones
[0:12] Nixon, movies with political fallout.
[0:15] We'll talk about Hollywood and politics
[0:17] with movie critic turn columnist Frank
[0:19] Rich of the New York Times and Newsweek
[0:21] assistant managing editor Evan Thomas.
[0:23] In our meet the press minute, former
[0:25] President Herbert Hoover from 1955.
[0:28] He chaired a commission on government
[0:30] efficiency and had some interesting
[0:32] ideas on the better use of vice
[0:34] presidents. And joining me in the
[0:35] questioning today are David Broer of the
[0:37] Washington Post and Brian Williams of
[0:39] NBC News. And with us now, the current
[0:42] vice president, Al Gore. Welcome.
[0:44] >> Thank you very much, Tim. December 15th,
[0:46] 5 days from now, the deadline Democrats,
[0:50] Republicans have set,
[0:51] >> will the government close down on the
[0:53] 15th if there's no budget deal?
[0:55] >> Certainly hope not, but it's entirely up
[0:57] to uh Speaker N. Genrich and Senate
[1:02] leader Bob Dole because President
[1:05] Clinton has gone the extra mile, put out
[1:09] a seven-year balanced budget plan that
[1:12] protects the important priorities.
[1:15] Uh and now it's up to the congressional
[1:19] leadership on the Republican side uh to
[1:22] determine whether or not they want a
[1:24] compromise or whether or not they want
[1:26] to do what they did just before
[1:28] Thanksgiving and shut down the
[1:30] government.
[1:30] >> If the government's closed down, will
[1:32] federal employees get back pay again?
