[0:02] revealed we're in week number 63. it's

[0:05] hard to believe but we're in chapter 22

[0:08] and we're looking forward to

[0:10] wrapping up this series probably in the

[0:11] next couple videos and so we're excited

[0:14] about that

[0:15] but today we're in revelation 22 verse

[0:17] number 12. that's an exciting verse and

[0:21] if you've got your bible in front of you

[0:23] or your bible app open you can read

[0:25] along with us but we'll put the verses

[0:27] up there in the video as well behold i

[0:31] come quickly

[0:32] and my reward is with me

[0:35] to give every man according as his work

[0:38] shall be now this is jesus christ

[0:41] talking jesus is talking about he's

[0:43] coming back and he's coming quickly now

[0:46] you may say well

[0:48] the bible was written a long time ago

[0:50] why why he said if it's quickly why

[0:52] hasn't he come yet well again our scope

[0:55] of time is different than god's scope of

[0:58] time

[0:59] and so it's coming quickly now it's

[1:01] twofold it his return is happening soon

[1:04] but it also speaks of the styling of his

[1:07] return it's gonna be quickly the bible

[1:09] describes it in other places in a moment

[1:12] in a twinkling of an eye and so we look

[1:15] forward to that return

[1:17] also he says his reward is with me

[1:20] his reward is with him the word so

[1:22] translated is mistos what refers to the

[1:25] due compensation for services rendered

[1:28] it also is rendered as wages the thought

[1:31] likely is that of various rewards

[1:33] promised for faithful service to christ

[1:36] in this life

[1:37] only one life will soon be passed and

[1:40] only what's done for christ will last

[1:43] one writer said

[1:44] this may be a generic reference to the

[1:47] impending bema seat

[1:49] set for those in christ in any event

[1:52] though his rewards in that day are

[1:55] promised

[1:56] for every

[1:57] man

[1:59] every man according to his work

[2:01] and so we talk about that as work should

[2:04] we we surely are not saved by good works

[2:06] that's definitely not the case

[2:08] and but there will be rewards for

[2:10] faithful service so the good works

[2:12] reference is not whether you get to

[2:13] heaven or you don't get to heaven the

[2:15] good works reference is the rewards for

[2:18] doing that which is right and in service

[2:21] for the lord while here upon the earth

[2:23] but then he goes into verse 13 and he

[2:26] says i am the alpha and omega

[2:30] the beginning and the end

[2:32] the first

[2:34] and the last you know it's amazing when

[2:37] jesus reveals himself to john at the

[2:40] beginning of this book in chapter one

[2:41] verse number eight and in verse 17 he

[2:44] does it

[2:45] as the alpha and omega

[2:47] he's the alpha the omega alpha being the

[2:50] first letter of the greek alphabet omega

[2:52] being the last letter of the greek

[2:54] alphabet he's the alpha major he's from

[2:56] the beginning and the end there's no he

[2:59] had no predecessor there was nobody

[3:00] before the lord

[3:02] now for us to comprehend that it's it's

[3:04] difficult at times but

[3:06] there was no predecessor and he'll have

[3:09] no successor he is and he always has

[3:12] been

[3:12] he's the first and the last so the as

[3:15] eternality comes into view here he's the

[3:18] eternal one and as he returns it will be

[3:21] just as he promised he's the eternal one

[3:25] then verse 14 our lord reiterates one of

[3:27] the most basic promises in the bible

[3:30] blessed are they that do his

[3:33] commandments

[3:34] that they may have right to the tree of

[3:36] life and may enter in through the gates

[3:39] into the city

[3:41] the

[3:42] doing of god's commandments does not

[3:44] convey salvation

[3:46] but becoming a child of god

[3:50] through faith in christ god promises

[3:52] blessings for obedience so here in verse

[3:55] number 14 blessed are they that do his

[3:58] commandments

[3:59] you're going to be rewarded i'm going to

[4:00] be rewarded as a child of god and that

[4:03] reward is going to be eternal in heaven

[4:07] there's going to be blessings that we

[4:09] get to enjoy for eternity future because

[4:12] of how we live our life many times i've

[4:15] used an illustration to talk to people

[4:17] about this

[4:18] if you have ever gone to a cemetery or

[4:20] you've seen the headstone marker for a

[4:22] grave you'll notice there's the person's

[4:25] name and then there's the date that they

[4:28] were born

[4:29] every person who's ever lived had a date

[4:31] that they were born

[4:33] and the bible tells us in the book of

[4:34] hebrews it's appointed unto man who

[4:36] wants to die and after that the judgment

[4:38] and so everyone who dies upon the earth

[4:42] has the date that they die

[4:44] so we have a beginning and we have an

[4:47] end but in between those two dates

[4:49] there's a little dash on the stone

[4:52] that dashes your life the bible even

[4:54] talks about that is our life is like a

[4:56] vapor it appears for a little time and

[4:58] then vanish at the way and so the

[5:00] analogy here that we're giving is that

[5:02] that little dash what you do in the dash

[5:06] has an impact on eternity

[5:08] what you do in that little span of time

[5:11] has an impact on the blessings of

[5:14] eternity now the decision you make in

[5:16] the dash

[5:17] determines your destination uh if you're

[5:20] a bible preacher or bible teacher you

[5:22] might want to write some of this down

[5:23] this is a good preaching outline it's

[5:25] not in my notes but what you do in the

[5:27] dash affects your destination what you

[5:30] do in the dash affects your blessings

[5:32] for eternity so the decision in the dash

[5:36] affects where you spend eternity whether

[5:38] it be in heaven or hell

[5:40] what you do in the dash after that

[5:42] decision if you've been saved by the

[5:44] blood of jesus christ you put your faith

[5:46] and trust in him that decision that you

[5:49] made in the dash now as you live your

[5:51] life determines blessings that you'll

[5:54] get to enjoy for all eternity so what

[5:57] you do in the dash has an impact there's

[6:00] blessings that are there it continues on

[6:02] though that the promise for blessing of

[6:05] obedience extends from one end of the

[6:07] bible to the other end of the bible all

[6:10] throughout the old testament there's

[6:11] talking about that

[6:13] jesus though here in our passage made an

[6:15] even more specific application to the

[6:17] promise notice what it says

[6:20] it says that they

[6:22] may have right to the tree of life

[6:25] and through the gates into the city

[6:28] now this may refer to those who in this

[6:30] life have turned to christ and trusted

[6:32] him as savior

[6:34] now it also could be conceivably

[6:36] referring to those who are obedient

[6:39] in any event the new heaven and the new

[6:42] earth

[6:43] these

[6:44] they

[6:45] that have obeyed will have right

[6:48] to the tree of life and entrance into

[6:50] new jerusalem

[6:52] it would seem that the principle of

[6:54] obedience will find blessing even into

[6:57] the eternal kingdom whether in this day

[7:00] or in then god has promised to bless

[7:02] obedience to his word

[7:04] so as we consider this verse verse

[7:06] number 14

[7:07] that they may have right to the tree of

[7:09] life

[7:10] after the only way you get access to

[7:13] heaven is by being saved that's the only

[7:16] way you get there

[7:18] it's not by being a good person the

[7:20] bible says that for by grace are you

[7:22] saved through faith and that not of

[7:24] yourselves it is a gift of god not of

[7:26] works lest any man should boast but your

[7:29] obedience to christ gives you eternal

[7:32] blessings in the new heaven and in the

[7:35] new earth

[7:36] now there's also a

[7:38] point here that's interesting to

[7:40] consider verse 15 for without our dogs

[7:43] and sorcerers whoremongers and murderers

[7:46] idolaters and whosoever loveth and

[7:48] maketh a lie

[7:49] now someone asked me pastor does that

[7:52] mean there's sin

[7:53] in the new earth no that's not what this

[7:56] is referencing this is referencing the

[7:59] two options there are saved people and

[8:02] there are unsaved people only saved

[8:05] people will get to enjoy the new heaven

[8:07] and the new earth unsaved people will

[8:10] not they will be without they'll be cast

[8:13] forever into the lake of fire and will

[8:16] be eternally

[8:18] separated from god

[8:21] in order for people to be eternally

[8:23] separated for god they've rejected jesus

[8:25] christ's offer of salvation

[8:27] therefore they cannot have a opportunity

[8:30] to be in a new heaven and the new earth

[8:33] where christ is at the center of it sin

[8:36] separates them from that another

[8:38] interesting fact is that you'll have to

[8:40] consider a new heaven and a new earth

[8:42] people will have glorified bodies

[8:45] now how will that be and what will they

[8:48] be like well that's a good question the

[8:50] one of the analogies one of the truths

[8:52] that i can see

[8:54] is that will be like christ was when he

[8:56] was resurrected from the dead

[8:59] you'll notice when christ appears in the

[9:01] upper room

[9:02] that he has a body that they can see

[9:05] a body that they can touch but you'll

[9:08] also notice that he had wounds

[9:11] but he wasn't bleeding

[9:13] he wasn't standing there with a

[9:14] spear-driven side and blood pouring out

[9:16] his side

[9:18] but he had a wound there that they could

[9:19] see and that they could touch and the

[9:21] nail prints and his hands and feet and

[9:23] so you know the the reality is we have a

[9:26] glorified body well leviticus talks

[9:29] about sin and and in the blood and all

[9:32] of those things and so we understand

[9:34] that eternal bodies glorified bodies

[9:37] will not have a sin nature

[9:41] therefore this cannot be a reference to

[9:44] people during that time eternity future

[9:47] being without the new heaven

[9:50] and being on the new earth and

[9:52] continuing in sin that is definitely not

[9:54] what the bible is speaking of

[9:56] here now you say well what's wrong with

[9:59] dogs well in the middle eastern time of

[10:01] the writing here this term dogs was a

[10:04] term of derision it'd kind of be like if

[10:06] we were talking about rats in the city

[10:09] and we would think of like new york city

[10:10] and the rats that are there it'd be a

[10:13] derogatory term so the writer here uses

[10:16] the terminology to talk about the things

[10:18] that are unpleasant the things that are

[10:20] wicked the things that are sinful

[10:22] the idolaters or hormones and murderers

[10:25] their sins

[10:27] are of the occult immorality violence

[10:30] the spirit of idolatry

[10:31] they come to new heaven and new earth

[10:33] sinners of all sorts will be far away

[10:37] in the lake of fire never to be an

[10:39] influence again

[10:41] it's a warning to those though

[10:43] because he's talking about the two

[10:45] groups

[10:46] now in eternity future you don't get to

[10:49] wait till eternity to determine

[10:52] which group you're in

[10:54] you get to determine that in the dash

[10:56] and in the decision of choosing the

[10:58] destination of where you're going to be

[11:01] and so in verse 14 and 15 he's talking

[11:03] about

[11:04] the two different groups that are there

[11:07] and he is breaking them down and look at

[11:09] verse number 16 he says i jesus

[11:12] if you're with us on sunday you'll

[11:13] realize why that's of such importance

[11:16] i jesus have sent mine angel to testify

[11:19] unto you these things in the churches

[11:23] in the churches

[11:24] it's not one church

[11:26] it's not a universal church

[11:28] it's churches

[11:30] therefore there are multiple

[11:32] locations

[11:34] and for it to be multiple locations it

[11:37] has to be

[11:38] talking of local assemblies so i jesus

[11:41] has sent mine angel now the word angel

[11:44] is the word angelos literally means

[11:46] messenger so it could be that jesus is

[11:49] talking about john here i have sent john

[11:52] to testify unto you these things in the

[11:56] churches

[11:57] well we know in chapter two in chapter

[11:58] three there are seven churches of asia

[12:00] minor that are mentioned

[12:02] seven literal churches local church

[12:04] assemblies that this letter is going to

[12:06] go to because jesus wrote it to them god

[12:09] wrote to john said write this to these

[12:12] people and he's going to deliver it to

[12:14] them

[12:15] and to the other churches in fact it's

[12:18] been delivered to our church

[12:20] through the youtube video series and

[12:22] also through the preaching of the word

[12:23] of god

[12:24] we've heard the letter we've read the

[12:27] things that god is delivering to the

[12:29] churches he says i have sent mine angel

[12:32] my messenger to testify unto you these

[12:34] things in the churches this is what he

[12:35] says i am the root and the offspring of

[12:39] david now that's an interesting phrasing

[12:42] there i'm the root and the offspring so

[12:45] he was before david because the root

[12:47] comes before the plant

[12:49] he's before david

[12:51] and he's the offspring of david well

[12:54] what is that detail that details his

[12:56] right to rule

[12:57] his deity

[12:59] of being the eternal son of god

[13:01] and being before david out of him came

[13:04] mankind but also

[13:07] as they

[13:08] humbled himself and came to this earth

[13:10] and was born of the virgin mary

[13:12] and born into the divinical family line

[13:15] he has the right to be king and he was

[13:18] the millennial king and he's talking

[13:20] about this to the group of people he's

[13:22] going to he's revealing i'm the root and

[13:25] the offspring i'm the bright and morning

[13:27] star before the sun comes up the morning

[13:30] star is already there

[13:32] he's the bright and morning star and so

[13:35] we look forward to the uh truths that

[13:38] are given here in verse number 16.

[13:42] he in revelation 1 5 jesus is known as

[13:45] the root of david here he describes

[13:47] himself as both the root as i mentioned

[13:49] uh the origin of david and yet the same

[13:52] time the offspring he's the bright and

[13:54] morning star uh there are numerous

[13:57] references to christ as a star found

[14:00] throughout scripture numbers 24 17.

[14:03] second peter 1 19 revelation 2 28

[14:07] now it's interesting our next verse here

[14:10] verse number 17 and the spirit and the

[14:12] bride say come

[14:14] and let him that heareth say come and

[14:17] let him that is a thirst come and

[14:20] whosoever will let him take the water of

[14:23] life

[14:24] freely now this reference cannot be

[14:27] eternity future

[14:29] because you've already drank of the

[14:31] living water in order to be an eternity

[14:34] future

[14:35] therefore the conclusion of this verse

[14:37] passage here is talking about the

[14:40] message going to the churches you'll

[14:42] notice the spirit and the bride the

[14:44] bride of christ being the church the

[14:46] local church and so the church it is our

[14:50] responsibility to tell people to come

[14:53] the holy spirit draws people into

[14:55] salvation but we've also got to go do

[14:58] our part as a church and tell them to

[15:00] come and drink of the water of life

[15:02] we've got to show them the water we've

[15:04] got to bring the water to them so that

[15:06] they can drink of the water of life

[15:09] for those

[15:10] thirsting spiritually the message is to

[15:12] come the invitation undoubtedly hearkens

[15:16] back to the beatitudes where jesus said

[15:18] blessed are they which hunger and thirst

[15:20] after righteousness for they shall be

[15:22] filled

[15:23] in the last great day of the feast jesus

[15:26] stood in christ saying if any man thirst

[15:28] let him come unto me and drink

[15:31] the invitation is to come is extended to

[15:33] whosoever will

[15:35] may come

[15:36] the thought is whosoever is willing

[15:39] let him come and drink of the water of

[15:42] life freely

[15:43] salvation in christ is thus beautifully

[15:46] portrayed as the water of life it's free

[15:50] and it's offered to all those who

[15:51] receive it

[15:53] insight into the human side of salvation

[15:55] is thus given the matter of the will is

[15:58] crucial

[15:59] it's not until one is willing to turn to

[16:03] christ and trust him as their savior

[16:06] that one will receive the water of life

[16:10] this touches upon the essence of

[16:12] repentance which is part and parcel of

[16:14] saving faith it begins when the heart is

[16:16] willing to turn to god this thing is

[16:19] accomplished and accompanied by faith in

[16:22] the christ

[16:23] we see here that's the church's

[16:25] responsibility to tell people to come

[16:29] i can't force people to be saved and you

[16:31] can't force people to be saved

[16:33] they have to make the decision the holy

[16:35] spirit draws them and they make the

[16:37] decision to come

[16:39] to accept to drink of the water of life

[16:42] freely

[16:43] now next week we're going to get into

[16:45] the last few verses here verses 18 19 20

[16:48] and 21 and we're going to wrap up this

[16:51] series in the book of revelation

[16:54] i want to encourage you
