[0:01] This is the CBS Evening News with Bob
[0:05] Schieffer.
[0:07] >> Good evening. New Orleans tonight is a
[0:09] city of the dead. Nearly everyone in the
[0:12] city who survived the hurricane has been
[0:14] evacuated, but authorities are finding
[0:16] bodies everywhere in attics, floating in
[0:19] the streets, crumpled in wheelchairs. No
[0:21] one really knows how many have died, but
[0:24] if the mayor is right when he says
[0:26] 10,000, that will be more than three
[0:29] times the death toll of 9/11. President
[0:33] Bush went back to the area today, but

[1:00] itself, then even worse, crumbling
[1:02] levees, insurgent floods. And only now
[1:05] does the recovery effort seem to be
[1:08] gaining traction.
[1:10] In the flooded streets of New Orleans,
[1:12] it's still a massive air-sea rescue
[1:14] operation. Helicopters prowl the
[1:16] neighborhoods looking for stragglers,
[1:18] and there are plenty to be found.
[1:23] Martial and Martha has been holding out
[1:25] with another family. They've had all
[1:27] they can stand. They flagged down a
[1:29] passing Black Hawk, and within minutes,
[1:31] five more evacuees were on their way to
[1:34] higher ground. A week after Hurricane
[1:36] Katrina hit, the water level in these
