[0:04] The search at sea today for answers to
[0:06] the tragedy of TWA Flight 800 off Long
[0:10] Island, New York, just moments after
[0:11] takeoff last night. Fire on the water
[0:14] after explosion in the sky. 228 persons
[0:18] aboard the Boeing 747. No known
[0:21] survivors. No determined cause. Was it a
[0:24] bomb? Was it sabotage? Was it a
[0:26] ground-to-air missile or was it some
[0:28] kind of catastrophic mechanical failure?
[0:34] This is the CBS Evening News.
[0:38] With Dan Rather reporting from CBS News
[0:41] headquarters in New York. Good evening.
[0:43] As for the cause of the great plane
[0:45] crash, the possibilities are many, the
[0:48] facts are few. Rain and stormy weather
[0:51] could be a problem later tonight as
[0:52] searchers comb the waters about 10 mi

[1:01] and investigators are still stressing
[1:03] officially that foul play is only one
[1:05] possibility, that the cause is
[1:07] undetermined. Privately, at least one
[1:10] law enforcement expert has told CBS News
[1:12] that a bomb is widely considered in the
[1:15] law enforcement community as probably
[1:17] the most likely possibility. Another
[1:19] highly reliable source has told CBS News
[1:21] of what's described as an unexplained
[1:23] radar blip that appeared to possibly
[1:26] circle the plane before it disappeared.
[1:28] David Martin's going to have more about
[1:29] that. Also, an Egyptian newspaper
[1:31] reported to receive a fax before the
[1:33] blast indicating the United States was
[1:35] about to get a quote nasty surprise. Off
[1:37] the Long Island coast last night, many
[1:39] said they
