[0:00] You're watching Coin News 6 news that's

[0:02] to the point.

[0:05] >> New Orleans has descended into near

[0:07] energy. There is violence in the streets

[0:10] and the mayor has issued what he calls a

[0:12] desperate SOS as local officials call

[0:15] the federal government's response a

[0:17] national disgrace. Good evening, I'm Bob

[0:20] Schaefer. Again, we're devoting our

[0:22] broadcast to the worsening crisis in and

[0:25] around New Orleans. And again tonight,

[0:27] John Roberts is heading up our coverage.

[0:30] Everywhere you look in this sweltering

[0:32] city, there are scenes from hell,

[0:34] buildings on fire, bodies floating in

[0:36] the water, looting without fear of

[0:39] arrest, and the city doesn't have what

[0:41] it needs to deal with it all.

[0:47] >> This is the CBS Evening News with Bob

[0:51] Schaefer.

[0:52] With 40,000 National Guard troops

[0:55] already called up for duty, the

[0:57] situation in New Orleans is so bad that

[0:59] our CBS News correspondent David Martin

[1:02] reports the Army is now making

[1:04] preparations to send in as many as

[1:07] 10,000 combat troops from the active

[1:10] duty force. There is one scrap of good

[1:13] news from New Orleans tonight. More than

[1:15] a hundred buses evacuated thousands of

[1:18] people from the hellhole that was once

[1:21] the Louisiana Super Dome and more will

[1:24] be brought out tonight and taken to the

[1:26] Astrodome in Houston. But they leave

[1:28] behind a city in anarchy with most of

[1:31] New Orleans still flooded. Angry mobs

[1:33] set fires, continued wholesale looting,

[1:36] and shot at rescue helicopters as

[1:39] frustration boiled over in ways large

[1:42] and small. It was also another day of

[1:45] dramatic rescues in Washington.
