[0:00] After sections of the Gulf Coast are

[0:02] ripped apart, going back to see what's

[0:04] been spared. And it's what they're after

[0:06] that drives them to crime. The small

[0:08] heist that pays big.

[0:10] From NBC News, this is NBC Nightly News

[0:14] reported from Washington by Brian

[0:17] Williams.

[0:19] Good evening. He is a 75year-old man who

[0:22] has traveled well over a half million

[0:24] miles. He is visiting his fifth

[0:26] continent this year alone. And if there

[0:28] was any doubt, today, Pope John Paul II

[0:30] proved he can fill New York's Central

[0:32] Park. The kind of turnout usually

[0:34] reserved for rock stars. And late today,

[0:37] when he chose to take a short walk in

[0:38] Midtown Manhattan, again, he drew

[0:40] throngs of people, just some of those he

[0:42] will touch on this trip, many of whom

[0:44] believe this is the right time for his

[0:47] message. We begin tonight in New York

[0:49] and NBC's Bob Abernett.

[0:51] [Music]

[0:56] With the skyline of Manhattan in the

[0:58] misty distance, 130,000 people packed

[1:01] the great lawn of Central Park to see

[1:04] and worship with John

[1:09] Paul. They'd begun arriving at 500 a.m.

[1:12] and their spirit was joyful. The Pope's

[1:15] messages were familiar, but his special

[1:17] target today was the young whom he urged

[1:20] to protect the unborn and meet the needs

[1:22] of the poor and homeless. Those who are

[1:26] alone or

[1:27] ill, for example, those suffering from

[1:33] AIDS, you are called to stand up for

[1:36] life. I just love the way that he always

[1:38] preaches about peace and love and hope.

[1:42] And by believing in those three things,

[1:44] it's possible to make everybody change

[1:46] their minds about the way they live

[1:48] their life. John Pa
