[0:02] This morning, America gives thanks on

[0:04] this Thanksgiving holiday. We're live at

[0:07] the nation's big parades, and we have

[0:09] expert advice to help you whip up that

[0:11] Thanksgiving feast.

[0:13] Foul weather fouls up holiday travel for

[0:16] parts of the nation. The road to the

[0:18] dinner table is a soggy one. Our Sam

[0:21] Champion is tracking the holiday storms.

[0:24] And hats off to our troops. We'll hear

[0:27] from our soldiers as they celebrate

[0:29] Thanksgiving amid reports of a surprise

[0:31] visitor to Iraq. And we'll reunite one

[0:35] family with their sons fighting for our

[0:37] country far from home.

[0:44] Happy Thanksgiving, America. I'm Chris

[0:47] Cromo. Happy Thanksgiving. I'm joined by

[0:50] Claire Shipman. Robin and Diane are home

[0:52] with their families, but we're very

[0:53] thankful to be here with you.

[0:54] >> We indeed are. We're here with our GMA

[0:56] family this morning and it's the

[0:58] weather's getting a little better here.

[0:59] We're standing along the Macy's

[1:01] Thanksgiving Day Parade route where the

[1:03] parade is supposed to roll through

[1:04] before too long and things are looking

[1:06] up.

[1:07] >> Yeah, you know, at first it looked like

[1:08] Mother Nature might drown this all out,

[1:10] but everybody's plowing ahead. The

[1:11] balloons were filled up. They may fly a

[1:14] little bit lower today because of some

[1:15] wind concerns, but the parade's going to

[1:17] be coming down the road.

[1:18] >> Now, all around the country, you can

[1:20] probably start to hear the sound of

[1:22] turkey basters as everybody's getting

[1:24] out there. utensils. They're weapons to

[1:26] attack that turkey. Well, of course, we

[1:28] will have our turkey 911 segment for all

[1:31] of you who need lastm minute help. So,

[1:33] don't worry.

[1:33] >> And what's very interesting, do you

[1:34] think that little feathered friend over

[1:36] there can be cooked in 42 minutes? 12 lb

[1:39] turkey. 42 minutes. Who Who believes it?

[1:41] Everybody's shaking their head. We don't

[1:42] believe you. We don't believe you. But

[1:44] we'll see. In this new oven, the Turbo

[1:46] Chef. It's a big time convection oven.

[1:48] 42 minutes. We'll see if we can do it.

[1:49] >> I think it's going to happen.

[1:51] >> I think we can do it in the microwave.

[1:52] And talk about space balls. A Russian

[1:54] astronaut has an incredible swing, hits

[1:58] a golf ball in space. How far did it go?

[2:00] We will let you know.

[2:02] >> That's all that space knowledge. I don't

[2:04] know about it. We also want to find out

[2:06] about what this big nor easter that's

[2:07] coming up the east coast may mean to the

[2:09] parades around the country to getting to

[2:10] your folks house. And we got one person

[2:12] who can certainly give us the answer.

[2:14] Sam Champion, happy Thanksgiving. Good

[2:16] to have you in my world, my friend.

[2:18] >> Good morning, Chris. Good morning,

[2:20] Claire. And happy Thanksgiving. It's

[2:21] amazing. We just happened to find these

[2:23] building blocks standing around the

[2:25] parade route that spell G M A. We're

[2:28] actually by one of the monitoring

[2:29] stations for the winds and we're kind of

[2:31] looking over the guy's shoulders looking

[2:32] at the computer. We're at 2.7 m hour

[2:35] right now as a wind. As the parade kicks

[2:37] off, there was an awful lot of concern

[2:39] about this nor easter that's moving up

[2:41] the Atlantic. And yes, overnight there

[2:43] was some wind and rain, but right now

[2:45] we're in one of the breaks with just

[2:46] some light and scattered showers and

[2:48] much lighter rain. It's only happened

[2:50] once in this this parade's 80year

[2:52] history that the big balloons could not

[2:54] go up and that was in 1971.

[3:03] >> The parade goes on rain or shine, the

[3:05] balloons and the floats are

[3:07] weatherproofed for rain and or snow.

[3:09] >> But what about the wind? This morning,

[3:11] the fate of Macy's dozen high-flying

[3:13] balloons all depends on New York's

[3:15] blustery breeze. The large helium

[3:18] balloons will not be permitted to fly if

[3:21] we have sustained winds over 23 miles an

[3:23] hour or wind gust over 34 miles per

[3:26] hour. Macy's has good reason to be

[3:28] cautious. In 1997, extreme wind sent the

[3:31] Cat in the Hat balloon careening into a

[3:33] lamp post, injuring four parade goers.

[3:36] And last year, a similar incident when

[3:38] the ropes of this Eminem balloon snagged

[3:40] a light fixture, raining debris down

[3:42] onto two sisters. This year, we added a

[3:45] state-of-the-art uh wind monitoring

[3:47] system. So, we're actually getting

[3:49] actual realtime, realworld conditions of

[3:52] what the winds are at the flying height

[3:54] of the balloons.

[3:56] The storm that could ground these

[3:57] balloons has left a trail of airport

[3:59] delays and highway jams up the eastern

[4:02] seabboard,

[4:04] flooding roads in North Carolina and

[4:06] blinding motorists in Maryland.

[4:08] >> Visibility becomes a big problem in real

[4:10] heavy rain. So, you really need to be

[4:12] extra cautious.

[4:13] >> In California, the problem was gridlock

[4:15] after a flatbed truck loaded with drums

[4:18] of hazardous material jacknifed on the

[4:20] 405. And in Minneapolis, gridlock of a

[4:23] different kind. Baggage handlers for

[4:25] Northwest Airlines refusing to work for

[4:27] over half an hour on America's busiest

[4:30] travel day.

[4:32] And the parade is proceeding smoothly.

[4:34] We're looking at the Clydes kind of

[4:36] bouncing around by us right now. Looks

[4:38] like that's the Oklahoma float. Now, you

[4:40] can see Big Bird back there behind us as

[4:42] well. Did you know that in 1924 when

[4:45] this started, it was called the Macy's

[4:46] Christmas Day Parade, even though they

[4:48] held it on Thanksgiving? Now, in 1927,

[4:51] they changed a lot of things. They named

[4:53] it the Thanksgiving Day Parade. And they

[4:55] also put those big helium balloons in

[4:57] it. And you can see just like Big Bird

[4:59] holding that teething ring, the ABCD

[5:02] teething ring, and all the other big

[5:04] balloons are lined up behind it. So,

[5:05] we're here. We're already going.

[5:07] Everything's proceeding right on time

[5:09] and right on schedule. Chris Claire.

[5:11] >> All right. Thanks, Sam. We want to check

[5:13] in on other festivities around the

[5:14] country now because, you know,

[5:15] Philadelphia and Detroit really have the

[5:18] granddaddies of the Thanksgiving Day

[5:19] parades. They've been going on for more

[5:20] than 80 years now. Let's first check in

[5:23] in Philly with Adam Joseph of our ABC

[5:25] affiliate WPBI. Adam, what's going on?

[5:29] >> Ah, it's a little windy here, Claire,

[5:31] but that has been really the major

[5:32] deciding factor whether or not our

[5:34] balloons would go up, but we've been

[5:36] given the okay. The balloons will be a

[5:38] part of the parade this year, but they

[5:40] won't go along the entire route. They're

[5:42] only going to be at the end of the

[5:43] parade around Akens Oval in the art

[5:45] museum. So, just a small portion of the

[5:47] parade will see the balloons because of

[5:49] that win. But we got to thank the 5,000

[5:51] volunteers that come out here every year

[5:54] that make this parade what it is. It's

[5:56] the nation's oldest parade. And from

[5:58] Philadelphia, Clear, we want to thank

[5:59] you and also wish you a very happy

[6:02] Thanksgiving.

[6:03] >> All right, thanks Adam. And now, let's

[6:04] check in Detroit. Bill Proctor about W.

[6:07] A lot of excitement here. WXYZ, our

[6:09] affiliate in Detroit. Hey, Bill.

[6:12] >> Sounds like Mother Nature is taking care

[6:13] of us a little bit better than the rest

[6:15] of the country. Fact of the matter is

[6:17] we're going to have clear skies today.

[6:19] And unlike last year when we had a

[6:21] couple of inches of snow and a really

[6:23] hard freeze, Fact of the matter is we

[6:25] may be right around 3540° about parade

[6:28] time, 57 before this day is over, and no

[6:32] wind, no precipitation, we should be

[6:34] great. And indeed, we are one of the

[6:36] oldest parades in the country, starting

[6:38] back in 1924.

[6:40] Only the papier-mâché back then, but of

[6:42] course, we've done a lot better this

[6:43] year. And of course, happy Thanksgiving

[6:45] to everyone around the country.

[6:48] >> All right. Thanks, Bill. He was sort of

[6:49] rubbing it in there about the weather a

[6:50] little bit, but you know,

[6:51] >> that's okay. That's okay. We've got

[6:53] everything we need right here, don't we?

[6:54] >> Exactly.

[6:55] >> We got family.

[6:56] >> We're going to have food. You're going

[6:57] to have the floats coming down.

[6:59] >> I'm bringing my kids to see the parade.

[7:00] >> Oh, see, now that's special. That's

[7:02] going to be terrific. Mine are a little

[7:03] too young still, but that's very nice.

[7:05] This is the city to do it, right?

[7:07] >> Absolutely. And it's great. I mean, they

[7:09] love those balloon characters.

[7:10] >> Well, we got a great show. We've got

[7:12] some news also. So, let's go up to Ron

[7:13] Clayborn for the latest headlines. Ron,

[7:17] >> good morning. Chris Claire. Good

[7:18] morning, everyone. Well, this is another

[7:20] holiday that US troops are spending away

[7:21] from home in Iraq. The new Marine

[7:24] comedant now says without more men and

[7:26] women in his ranks, the situation there

[7:28] could get even more dire. Meanwhile,

[7:30] three Marines are the newest casualties

[7:31] in Iraq. They were killed fighting in

[7:33] the Anbar province. In Beirut this

[7:35] morning, the funeral for slain Christian

[7:36] politician Pierre Jamal turned into a

[7:38] massive demonstration against Hezbollah

[7:40] militants and their Syrian supporters.

[7:43] Mourners burned pictures of Syria's

[7:44] president, they blame his administration

[7:46] for Jamal's assassination. Syria not

[7:48] only denies the accusation, it has

[7:50] condemned the killing. The poisoned

[7:53] former Russian spy has apparently taken

[7:55] a turn for the worse. A friend of

[7:56] Alexander Lit Venenko says he's now on

[7:59] life support this morning after

[8:00] suffering heart fail. Lit Venenko's

[8:02] London hospital will only say that he is

[8:04] in very serious condition and is being

[8:07] treated in intensive care. Well, OJ

[8:10] Simpson is finally speaking out, telling

[8:12] what he did and why he did it. But ABC's

[8:15] Dan Harris reports Simpson's admission

[8:17] has nothing to do with any crimes.

[8:20] In an interview with a Miami radio

[8:22] station, OJ Simpson said the now

[8:23] cancelled book entitled If I Did It was

[8:26] not a confession.

[8:28] >> I didn't kill him. No matter what

[8:29] everybody want to say, I didn't do it.

[8:32] >> Simpson said the book, which reportedly

[8:34] describes how he theoretically would

[8:36] have killed his ex-wife Nicole Brown

[8:38] Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman, was

[8:41] not his idea. He also denied reports

[8:44] that he was paid $3.5 million for the

[8:46] book. He did say, however, that he was

[8:49] paid.

[8:49] >> But everybody stopped being so naive.

[8:52] Let's grow up. Of course, I got paid.

[8:55] >> Of course, I spend the money on my

[8:56] bills. Uh, it's gone.

[8:58] >> Simpson said he's struggling financially

[9:00] and that he only agreed to participate

[9:02] in this project to earn money for his

[9:04] two children.

[9:05] >> My kids were the ones who were going to

[9:06] benefit from the sale of the book. I

[9:08] made it clear that I thought it was

[9:10] blood money. I made up a financial

[9:12] decision. I hope nobody buys it. If he

[9:14] really cared about his kids, he wouldn't

[9:17] have killed their mother. He wouldn't

[9:19] have inflicted the pain on them now by

[9:21] participating in a book called If I Did

[9:24] It.

[9:25] >> Simpson saved perhaps his harshest words

[9:27] for the family of brutally murdered Ron

[9:30] Goldman.

[9:30] >> Goldman's them. They got to stop being

[9:32] professional professional victims.

[9:34] >> There's not a single thing that I care

[9:36] about other than the fact that I was

[9:38] thrilled to hear that I'm we're

[9:39] aggravating the daylights out of them.

[9:41] Simpson said he was relieved when public

[9:43] pressure forced news corporation chief

[9:46] Rupert Murdoch to cancel the book's

[9:48] publication.

[9:49] >> This house celebrated when we found out

[9:51] that the book was.

[9:52] >> In the interview, Simpson said he would

[9:54] have given up the money he was paid for

[9:56] the book if he could have spelled out

[9:58] his theory about who really committed

[10:00] the crime. But he would not say what

[10:03] that theory is.

[10:04] >> For Good Morning America, Dan Harris,

[10:06] ABC News.

[10:07] >> A spectacular end to a high-speed chase

[10:09] in Florida. Dozens of police cars

[10:11] followed this Jeep near Fort Lauderdale

[10:13] for almost 30 minutes, dodging bullets

[10:15] fired by the driver. Police finally blew

[10:17] out the tires which caused the

[10:19] automobile to flip over. The driver was

[10:21] killed in that crash. And finally, a guy

[10:24] who's already had his fill of turkey and

[10:26] then some, a Chicago culinary student,

[10:28] listen to this, shoved down almost 5

[10:31] pounds of bird in just 12 minutes during

[10:33] the annual New York City contest.

[10:35] 21-year-old Patrick Bertoi also holds

[10:38] the eating record for pizza and

[10:40] chocolate. That's the news at 710. Back

[10:44] to Sam Champion on the Parade route.

[10:46] Ron, we're along the parade route on

[10:48] Central Park West here. Everybody's kind

[10:50] of breezing on by. The big concern about

[10:53] the wind and the rain. Oh, there's been

[10:54] wind and there has been rain, but the

[10:57] parade seems to go on even though both

[10:59] of them are out here. Let's check the

[11:00] boards and show you exactly what you've

[11:02] got to deal with today. As you step out

[11:04] the door in the Northwest, it's a big

[11:05] concern for us. Storm after storm. And

[11:07] there's more wind and rain all along the

[11:09] coastline of Washington and Oregon. Once

[11:11] you get above about 4,000 ft, you're

[11:14] picking up snow. And above 6,000 ft,

[11:16] you're picking up a lot of snow. And

[11:18] that continues into Idaho, Montana, even

[11:20] into Colorado and Wyoming during the day

[11:22] today. So, the national outlook shows us

[11:24] we've got those showers along the

[11:26] northwest. It's nice and mild across

[11:28] most of the nation. Early in the

[11:29] morning, Southern California will have

[11:31] some fog that may slow some air travel

[11:33] if you're still a lingering traveler,

[11:34] but that fog will burn off to a

[11:36] beautiful day. It's nice and warm from

[11:37] Texas all the way through the middle of

[11:39] the nation. It is a gorgeous day like

[11:41] 69° in New Orleans, 66 in Atlanta, 64 in

[11:46] St. Louis. That's the weather around the

[11:48] nation. Here's what you can expect this

[11:50] morning.

[11:51] >> Good morning everyone. I'm Julia Brad.

[11:53] Happy Thanksgiving to you. We are seeing

[11:54] a heavy snow warning in effect for the

[11:56] Cascades today. Up to 12 inches expected

[11:59] in the mountains. Otherwise, scattered

[12:00] showers here in the valley this morning

[12:01] and then increasing rain later on this

[12:03] afternoon. We should see a high of about

[12:04] 47 degrees with up to about a half an

[12:07] inch of rain total here in the valley

[12:09] today. Tonight, it tapers off to

[12:10] showers. And tomorrow morning, as you

[12:12] head out chopping, it will be just

[12:13] scattered showers, but on the cool side.

[12:15] Then a strong storm comes in on Sunday.

[12:17] This one is cold and could bring snow

[12:18] levels down to 1,000 ft.

[12:24] And we're in a little break of the wind

[12:25] and the rain right now. But we've seen

[12:27] some scattered showers waiting off in

[12:29] the Atlantic. And every now and then a

[12:31] gust will come along. So we know to

[12:32] expect a little bit of moisture and a

[12:34] little gusty wind. Chris, the saying is

[12:38] home is where the heart is, right? And

[12:39] that's something our troops, all 225,000

[12:42] of them stationed around the world, are

[12:44] probably reflecting on this morning.

[12:46] ABC's Hillary Brown has an update on the

[12:48] men and women at Camp Victory in Baghdad

[12:50] as they celebrate far from home.

[12:52] Hillary, happy Thanksgiving.

[12:58] >> Well, good morning. And yes, we're here

[12:59] in one of the huge mess at Camp Liberty

[13:02] where about 3,000 men and women of the

[13:05] First Cavalry Division have been tucking

[13:07] into 2,000 lbs of turkey, 500 lb of ham,

[13:10] and about a 100 cans of cranberry sauce.

[13:13] It has been Thanksgiving dinner with all

[13:15] the trimmings, but for some it's been a

[13:18] bittersweet moment.

[13:21] Most of these men are on their second

[13:23] deployment here, which means they will

[13:25] have spent a total of 2 years in Iraq

[13:28] before they go home. Right now, home is

[13:31] what they're thinking of very much.

[13:34] Sergeant Kelsey Dawkins has a wife and

[13:36] three small kids back in Illinois, and

[13:39] he misses them, especially at

[13:40] Thanksgiving. The bond he has with his

[13:43] soldiers, he says, will get him through

[13:45] the day.

[13:46] >> It's a hard time during the holidays,

[13:48] but you know, it's it's doable. I'm here

[13:51] with my soldiers, and this is my family

[13:53] away from home.

[13:55] >> Specialist Jeremiah Brooks works as a

[13:58] mechanic here. He isn't married, but he

[14:00] talks to his family every day. At

[14:02] Thanksgiving, he aches for them. Being

[14:05] away from the family is a hard part, but

[14:06] I got uh great people like my NCOs's and

[14:09] my fellow soldiers that I get to spend

[14:11] Thanksgiving with, so

[14:13] kind of makes up for it. I guess

[14:15] >> it may be Thanksgiving, but the troops

[14:17] are still putting themselves in harm's

[14:19] way here. They're on patrol in their

[14:21] famous Striker armored personnel

[14:23] carriers with remote control guns and

[14:25] all kinds of electronics.

[14:27] >> It's marvelous. As the debate goes on in

[14:30] Washington about troop strength, these

[14:32] soldiers all say that more would be

[14:35] better.

[14:36] >> Any amount of extra presence here would

[14:38] take more pressure off of people's sold

[14:40] uh shoulders. Night falls like a stone

[14:43] here as the patrol gets back to base.

[14:45] Sergeant Juan Palma has a wife and two

[14:48] little girls back home in California. He

[14:51] tries to be as stoic about the

[14:52] separation.

[14:53] >> All of us would love to be with our

[14:55] families, you know, sharing with them.

[14:58] Uh, but unfortunately, you know, it's a

[15:00] it's a sacrifice that we have to do.

[15:03] >> Sergeant Michelle James is on her third

[15:05] tour here. As a driver, she's logged

[15:08] more than 200,000 miles through every

[15:11] major city in Iraq. She's not married

[15:14] either, but comes from a close-knit

[15:16] family.

[15:16] >> A holiday comes around and and and it's

[15:19] difficult.

[15:21] >> Would she be up for a fourth tour if it

[15:23] came to that? when we've met our

[15:26] objective and we feel that um we feel

[15:30] that it's time that the work is done

[15:34] that we can rest assured that all is

[15:37] well and it's time to to move on

[15:40] >> that could be a yes or a no

[15:46] >> and I'm here with a couple of soldiers

[15:48] who are just digesting this enormous

[15:50] meal now soldier what's your name and

[15:51] where's your hometown

[15:52] >> my name is Cory Antley I'm from Orange

[15:54] South Carolina

[15:54] >> in your unit?

[15:56] >> Fourth of the 25th Infantry Division,

[15:58] second of 377 field artillery airborne.

[16:00] >> Wa, that's a mouthful. And blue, what's

[16:02] your name? Where's your hometown?

[16:04] >> How you doing? My name is Lorenzo

[16:05] Antley. I'm from Orangeburg, South

[16:06] Carolina. I'm part of the first CAD

[16:08] division.

[16:09] >> You two brothers, Antley Antley?

[16:11] >> Yes, ma'am.

[16:12] >> You are. Do you do you always manage to

[16:14] get together Thanksgiving?

[16:16] >> No.

[16:17] >> Last time we were together, it was here

[16:18] 2003.

[16:20] >> 2003. So, how is it that you I mean, you

[16:24] never get together at home?

[16:25] >> No, ma'am. The last time we were

[16:26] together for Thanksgiving was um 2003.

[16:29] Almost exactly where we are right now.

[16:30] >> I see. So, it's the army that brings you

[16:33] together?

[16:33] >> Yes, ma'am.

[16:34] >> Yes, it is.

[16:36] >> So, is it a good day for you then?

[16:38] >> Yes, it's a very good day. Nothing's

[16:39] more important than family on

[16:40] Thanksgiving through the holidays.

[16:43] >> That's right. Well, thank you very much.

[16:44] So, there you have it. You know, the

[16:46] army separates people Thanksgiving, but

[16:48] sometimes it brings them together again.

[16:51] Back to you, New York.

[16:52] >> All right, Hillary. Thank you. a great

[16:53] reunion and we'll have another um

[16:55] reunion later this hour. And now, if you

[16:58] think Tiger Woods is incredible, we've

[17:00] got a golf swing that is out of this

[17:02] world. Literally, a Russian cosminaut

[17:04] hit a golf ball from the International

[17:06] Space Station into space Wednesday. It

[17:09] was all just a stunt for a Russian

[17:10] company. But boy, was it neat. ABC's Ned

[17:13] Potter has more.

[17:16] No matter how bad a golfer male Churan

[17:18] may be, he has now set a world record or

[17:21] maybe a universe record.

[17:23] >> All right, there it goes. And it went

[17:25] pretty far.

[17:26] >> You have to watch very carefully there

[17:29] as the ball heads to the lower right.

[17:31] But the Canadian golf maker that paid

[17:33] for the stunt and made this animation

[17:36] says the ball will go millions of miles

[17:38] before it burns up in the Earth's

[17:40] atmosphere. Take that, Tiger Woods.

[17:42] >> It was an excellent shot. A sixiron

[17:45] though on the International Space

[17:47] Station almost became an international

[17:49] incident.

[17:50] >> This isn't a type of an experiment that

[17:51] would typically be designed and

[17:53] conducted uh uh for for the US program.

[17:57] >> That's a diplomatic way of saying that

[17:58] NASA, which runs most of the space

[18:00] station, was not amused. It had a couple

[18:03] of dozen engineers at taxpayers expense

[18:05] making sure the ball couldn't carine off

[18:07] somewhere and break something.

[18:09] >> I'm glad to do it as long as it's a safe

[18:11] thing to execute. To top things off, it

[18:13] turns out the cosminaut urine had never

[18:15] even played golf. They had to teach him.

[18:18] >> Have you had any experience at golf at

[18:21] all?

[18:22] >> I can say for sure no experience at all.

[18:25] >> He practiced on Earth. He trained

[18:27] underwater. He took a few swings inside

[18:30] the space station cabin. And nobody will

[18:33] ever know just where in the rough his

[18:35] shot landed. For Good Morning America,

[18:38] Ned Potter, ABC News, New York.

[18:41] >> Wow. I wonder if Tiger Woods had hit

[18:43] that ball, how far it would have gone.

[18:45] Amazing. Now, let's check in with Chris

[18:46] Cuomo, who should be down in our GMA

[18:48] kitchen getting things ready for later

[18:50] today. Chris,

[18:51] >> it's heating up here. It's As we speak,

[18:53] many of you are probably kneedeep and

[18:54] stuffing in the final throws of pulling

[18:56] that Thanksgiving feast together. And

[18:58] the centerpiece of the meal, of course,

[18:59] is the turkey. And as we all know, it

[19:01] can take the longest time. So, how do

[19:03] you cook your turkey? 3 hours, 4 hours,

[19:06] sometimes 5 hours. How about this? 42

[19:08] minutes. Who believes me? Who look at

[19:10] the faces?

[19:11] Lot of haters. Well, we got Sarah Molton

[19:13] here right now with a very new modern

[19:15] piece of equipment that turkey in 42

[19:18] minutes.

[19:18] >> That's right. It's airspeed technology.

[19:20] It's called the Turbo Chef. We've never

[19:22] used this before. So, this is what the

[19:23] manufacturer tells us. So, we're going

[19:24] to check it out this morning. We set the

[19:26] oven to 425. We've got a 12PB turkey

[19:29] here. We're going to get it in there.

[19:31] Yep.

[19:32] >> There we go. We just put a little

[19:33] butter, salt, and pepper. Now, we should

[19:35] You want to press the start button. And

[19:38] we're going to set the timer. I just

[19:39] want to explain how this works very

[19:40] quickly. It cooks 15 times faster than

[19:44] the average oven because of forced air.

[19:46] It's like a convection oven.

[19:47] >> Turbo air.

[19:48] >> That's right.

[19:48] >> All right. So, we've got the clock going

[19:50] right now. It's counting down or

[19:51] counting up to 42 minutes. We'll see how

[19:52] it goes. And throughout the show, if you

[19:54] need any help, remember your 911 turkey

[19:57] helps. Anything you need for

[19:58] Thanksgiving, you can get here. Go to

[20:00] the website or call in. We're going to

[20:01] be answering them or Sarah will be

[20:03] answering them and we're going to get

[20:04] all that done here. And we'll be

[20:05] checking in with our turkey to see

[20:07] whether we can get it done. You think 42

[20:09] minutes?

[20:09] >> I don't know. We'll see.

[20:10] >> 42 minutes. We're going to see. We'll be

[20:12] right back with our turkey and with a

[20:14] lot more for you.

[20:30] Childhood quickly flies away like

[20:33] cookies on a plate. So, let us bake some

[20:36] more today. And maybe time will wait.

[22:29] >> Good morning. This is K2 News, the

[22:32] spirit of the Northwest.

[22:35] >> Happy Thanksgiving everyone. It is 7:22.

[22:37] I'm Helen Rothus. Here is what's making

[22:39] news this morning. New this morning, a

[22:41] two alarm fire broke out at the Parkway

[22:43] Garden Apartments located on Northeast

[22:45] Sandy Boulevard and 142nd Avenue.

[22:48] Portland Fire responded to the scene

[22:50] shortly before 6:30 this morning and

[22:52] managed to get it under control within a

[22:54] short time. No one was hurt. The cause

[22:56] is under investigation. And we do have a

[22:58] crew at the scene and we'll bring you

[23:00] more information as it becomes

[23:01] available. Portland police responded to

[23:04] a 911 call about a fight and ended up

[23:06] finding a dead body. The call came in

[23:09] from Northeast 148th and Cooch late last

[23:12] night. Several people were reported to

[23:14] be fighting. Police discovered the body

[23:16] of a man who had apparently been

[23:17] stabbed. He is described as being either

[23:20] a white male or a light-skinned Hispanic

[23:22] man. Detectives have no suspect and have

[23:24] not determined a motive for the murder.

[23:27] We now know the name of a man who died

[23:29] during a duck hunting trip near

[23:30] Giraaldi. David Boy of Malala had gone

[23:33] duck hunting with a friend in the Tiec

[23:35] Bay when he disappeared. The Coast Guard

[23:37] found the body of a 63-year-old

[23:39] yesterday in the water while using a

[23:41] helicopter and several boats. The cause

[23:43] of his death remains under

[23:45] investigation. Police in Salem say

[23:47] thieves are targeting cars with garage

[23:49] door openers. The crooks break in and

[23:52] take the openers and then use them to

[23:53] get access into the garage. Five homes

[23:56] have been burglarized in the last couple

[23:58] of weeks, mostly in Southeast Salem.

[24:01] Police say thieves steal whatever they

[24:02] can to get in the get in the garage, but

[24:04] they don't enter the home. You

[24:06] >> know, it's just a bad feeling. You don't

[24:08] feel safe.

[24:09] >> It's fairly common thing. I really urge

[24:11] people to take the garage door opener

[24:13] into the house with them if they leave

[24:15] their car out on the street.

[24:17] >> Police say the thieves are likely

[24:18] familiar with the neighborhoods. Well,

[24:21] that's our news for now. When we return,

[24:22] Julia will have our Thanksgiving

[24:24] forecast.

[26:08] >> Scattered showers continue across the

[26:10] area this morning. For your Thanksgiving

[26:11] holiday, we are going to see rain

[26:13] increase. A live look outside from the

[26:14] in Spanish Head Resort Hotel in Lincoln

[26:16] City. And they've seen quite a bit of

[26:17] rain there along the coast this morning.

[26:19] As we look at Storm Alert Doppler radar,

[26:20] you can see there is still a heavy snow

[26:22] warning in effect for the Cascades. Most

[26:24] of the moisture will fall in the higher

[26:25] elevations today, but we should still

[26:27] see increasing rain here in the valley

[26:29] as another disturbance heads through uh

[26:31] later on this afternoon. Check out San

[26:33] Pass. This picture was take snapped just

[26:35] about 7:14 just a few minutes ago. They

[26:37] are getting dumped on up in the

[26:39] mountains. It will be very treacherous

[26:40] travel over the Cascades. Chains are

[26:42] required if you're heading over the

[26:44] higher elevations. So, here's the latest

[26:46] look at the wider view. Here we are

[26:49] expecting another disturbance to come

[26:50] inland later today. So do expect rain to

[26:52] increase here in the valley. It's

[26:53] currently 43° in the metro area as well

[26:55] as in Vancouver. Salem is checking in

[26:57] with 42 and it's currently 43 in Aurora

[27:00] and and in Mcinville. We will only reach

[27:02] 47 this afternoon with about a total at

[27:05] the most a half an inch of rain around

[27:06] the area. And then overnight tonight it

[27:08] does taper off to showers. Tomorrow

[27:09] morning if you're heading out shopping,

[27:11] you should just see scattered showers in

[27:12] the morning. Uh but then more rain later

[27:14] on in the evening. Of course, a civil

[27:15] war game. should see temperatures in the

[27:16] 40s with scattered showers. A strong

[27:18] system comes through on Sunday and we'll

[27:20] bring snow levels possibly down to 1,000

[27:22] ft.

[30:06] Division North, we want to send our

[30:09] thanksgiving wishes to our family and

[30:15] >> Good morning.

[30:21] And we say happy Thanksgiving and thank

[30:23] you to all the service men and women so

[30:25] far from home this holiday morning. I

[30:28] mean, we're getting just a little itty

[30:29] bitty taste of it this morning. Just

[30:31] delaying our Thanksgiving. Imagine how

[30:33] difficult it is to be away from your

[30:35] loved ones on a day like this. So,

[30:37] >> this Thanksgiving, we're going to bring

[31:09] it. I meant it to both of you. I love my

[31:11] bird, but I love my Ron, my clear just a

[31:13] little bit.

[31:13] >> Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Good

[31:15] morning, America. Let me get that in.

[31:17] and happy Thanksgiving. Also coming up,

[31:19] we've got your last minute cooking

[31:36] >> There's also for other people who don't

[31:38] like turkey. We all like turkey. There's

[31:40] an alternative out there. It's called uh

[31:42] >> Tofurki. What's it called? Tofurk.

[31:45] >> Tofurk. That's

[31:47] >> in English that means to perky. Well,

[31:49] you're asking what it is. You'll find

[31:50] out. And you'll find out a little bit

[31:52] later.

[31:52] >> I'm afraid to ask.

[31:53] >> No, it looks good. Anything that's made

[31:54] on a conveyor belt has to be very.

[31:57] >> Later on, we have Diane sitting down

[31:59] with Mel Gibson to talk about his new

[32:01] movie, how his life has changed these

[32:02] past few months since he's been sober,

[32:04] and how he's reached out to other

[32:06] celebrities battling drug and alcohol

[32:08] addiction. An all new interview is going

[32:10] to be coming up. But first, we're going

[32:11] to go to the weather, and that can only

[32:13] mean one thing. Sam Champion out there

[32:15] on the parade route. How you doing, Sam?

[32:18] >> And a little bit of rain and wind. Good

[32:19] morning, Chris, Claire, Ron. Good

[32:21] morning, everyone. And you know, Chris

[32:22] is pointing out how thankful he is for

[32:24] everyone. I guess I should say I'm

[32:25] thankful, too. I don't know. Uh, so we

[32:27] are standing a little bit in some light

[32:28] showers. First time I have ever been,

[32:30] ever been with clowns in plastic wrap.

[32:35] I don't even know what to say about it,

[32:37] but we have some scattered showers and a

[32:38] little bit of gusty wind to deal with.

[32:40] Let's get to the boards and show you

[32:41] what you're in for during the day today.

[32:42] In case you're not in the northern

[32:43] atlant uh mid-Atlantic or northeastern

[32:45] states, we're watching some snow fall in

[32:48] the Northwest. And you're looking at

[32:49] pictures from Mount Hood, Oregon right

[32:50] now. There's at least a foot of snow on

[32:52] the ground. They're expecting another 2

[32:53] feet overnight tonight. Cars have to

[32:55] have chains on tires and everybody's

[32:58] driving carefully. But it's an early

[32:59] snow season and ski season for the

[33:01] Northwest with storm after storm. And

[33:03] this will continue to push some rain,

[33:04] wind, and snow from all from the

[33:06] northwest all the way up into the

[33:08] mountains of Idaho into Montana as well.

[33:10] Now, most of the nation is gorgeous.

[33:12] Look at those numbers. You're getting

[33:14] some beautiful numbers and all the way

[33:16] through Texas, also through Arizona. And

[33:18] look, look at New Mexico. You're in the

[33:20] 60s there. 65 degrees as you start to

[33:22] work up toward the Great Lakes. Even by

[33:23] the time you get into the Northeast,

[33:25] you've got some comfortable

[33:26] temperatures. We're just dealing a

[33:27] little bit with the rain. That's the

[33:28] weather around the nation. Here's what

[33:29] you can expect this morning.

[33:31] >> Good morning, everyone. and happy

[33:32] Thanksgiving. Scattered showers will

[33:34] continue this morning. And then this

[33:35] afternoon in the valley, we are looking

[33:37] at increasing rain, steadier rain at

[33:39] times. There is still a heavy snow

[33:41] warning in effect for the Cascades

[33:42] through tomorrow. 8 to 12 ines of snow

[33:44] is expected there.

[33:50] >> The rain just picked up, but the good

[33:52] news is the wind has not. So, we're all

[33:54] ready. RIGHT.

[33:54] >> ALL RIGHT.

[33:55] >> That weather report has been brought to

[33:57] you by K Jewelers. Chris,

[33:59] >> thanks Sam. And that's and it's good to

[34:00] hear about that wind not picking up yet.

[34:02] And of course, we all know that

[34:03] Thanksgiving is a day when so many of us

[34:05] will travel great distances to be with

[34:06] our loved ones. So, we wanted to reunite

[34:08] a family that can't be together in

[34:10] person on this day. We have Army

[34:12] Sergeants Nicholas and Kyle Amsbury.

[34:14] They're serving in Iraq. And they join

[34:16] us now from Toree. Now, their home is in

[34:18] Mesa, Arizona. And we have their mother,

[34:20] Carol Anderson, their stepfather, Nick

[34:22] Brassfield, and their sister, Sarah.

[34:25] Carol hasn't seen her sons in five

[34:27] months since last June when they were

[34:29] together for her birthday. So now

[34:31] everybody's going to be together. Carol,

[34:33] mom, how are you feeling this morning on

[34:35] Thanksgiving Day?

[34:39] >> I'm feeling pretty good. I'm a I'm

[34:41] really homesick for the boys and wish

[34:43] they were here and it's great to see

[34:44] them.

[34:45] >> This is great. Now we have Kyle and

[34:48] Nick. You guys are in Tree. We know that

[34:49] you guys are scouts. can't talk too much

[34:51] about what you do, but you can talk

[34:53] about how you're feeling this

[34:54] Thanksgiving day. How are you feeling

[34:56] getting the chance to say hello to

[34:57] everybody at home?

[35:00] >> Uh I think it's it's real great. Uh we

[35:03] weren't expecting it and it's uh it's a

[35:05] great privilege to be able to talk to

[35:07] our family members.

[35:09] >> Yeah, things are going good over here.

[35:10] Uh good meal. It's good to uh talk to

[35:14] family members.

[35:15] >> Well, then why don't we do that? Who

[35:17] wants to hear from me when you can be

[35:18] talking to your own? It's up to you

[35:20] guys. Mom, dad, boys, talk to each

[35:23] other.

[35:25] >> Hey.

[35:26] >> Hi, boys.

[35:26] >> All right.

[35:27] >> Hello.

[35:27] >> How are you guys?

[35:28] >> Hi, Mom. Everybody, happy Thanksgiving.

[35:31] >> Uh, we're doing pretty good. How are you

[35:32] guys doing?

[35:34] >> Good. I sent a package off yesterday,

[35:37] Kyle, Nicholas, for you guys. So, you'll

[35:38] be getting it soon.

[35:42] >> Okay.

[35:43] >> Okay. Sounds good.

[35:46] What are your what are your plans for uh

[35:48] Thanksgiving dinner?

[35:50] >> Yeah, I'm here.

[35:53] >> Well, we've uh

[35:54] >> What are your

[35:54] >> we've uh we've already eaten uh just

[35:58] they've got the same stuff that uh we

[36:01] had back home. It's good.

[36:06] >> Was it as good as a home-cooked meal?

[36:11] >> Uh it's it's pretty close. It's

[36:14] It's not your cooking, but uh it's good

[36:17] enough.

[36:20] >> Hey, Sarah, you're up there. I saw you

[36:21] dabbing your eyes. Isn't it great to see

[36:23] your brothers? What do you want to say

[36:24] to your brother, Sarah?

[36:26] >> Yes, it is.

[36:28] I miss you boys. I love you.

[36:33] >> And we miss you, too. Love you.

[36:37] >> We're very proud of you guys.

[36:40] >> Nick and Kyle, your sisters brought to

[36:42] tears by seeing you out there. Everybody

[36:44] is so proud. Why don't you give her a

[36:46] little bit of uh give her a little bit

[36:47] of reason to feel okay? Let her know how

[36:50] you guys are doing there. Is everything

[36:51] going well? You guys feeling confident?

[36:55] >> Yeah, everything's going real good. Uh

[36:57] it's great to be able to be with each

[36:59] other. So, uh when times get tough, we

[37:03] got each other.

[37:07] >> Sarah, you're still missing them though,

[37:09] huh? Even though you know they're okay,

[37:10] they're still not home.

[37:13] Yes, of course. Hopefully they'll come

[37:15] home soon.

[37:18] >> And at least, you know, so often we hear

[37:20] these stories where families are broken

[37:21] apart. At least you two guys have each

[37:23] other, right, Nick and Kyle? What does

[37:25] it mean to know that you've got your

[37:26] brother on your flank if you need

[37:28] somebody some support or just some

[37:29] cover?

[37:34] >> It's uh it's definitely good to know

[37:36] that you got somebody you could trust.

[37:38] Um,

[37:39] so it's nice.

[37:43] >> So, Mom, Dad, what do you want to say to

[37:45] these boys before we let them get back

[37:46] to what they're doing there, keeping us

[37:47] all safe?

[37:50] >> We love you boys. Nicholas, Kyle, I'm so

[37:52] proud of you and thank you so much for

[37:55] defending our country and taking care of

[37:57] us and making sure that that we have a

[37:59] nice free life. and and I appreciate and

[38:02] am so proud of you and I can't wait for

[38:04] you to get home so I can give you a big

[38:06] hug and a kiss.

[38:11] >> Boys are very proud.

[38:12] >> We love you, too. And uh we know you're

[38:14] that you're proud of us.

[38:17] >> Okay, you guys Thanksgiving. It's good

[38:20] to talk to you guys.

[38:23] >> Uh good to see you guys. You look a

[38:24] little thin, but just keep eating, okay?

[38:27] And we'll uh we'll have a party when you

[38:29] get home.

[38:32] All right.

[38:33] >> Okay.

[38:35] >> Okay.

[38:36] >> Even Even at war, you even at war, you

[38:38] still have to eat.

[38:40] >> Kyle and Nicholas, thank you so much.

[38:42] >> Happy Thanksgiving to you soldiers. Do

[38:44] the best you can over there. And we are

[38:46] all very very thankful for what you're

[38:47] doing.

[38:48] >> Carol, Nick, thank you so much.

[38:50] >> All right. For joining us this morning.

[38:52] >> Happy Thanksgiving.

[38:52] >> Thank you.

[38:53] >> And Sarah, thank you.

[38:54] >> Love you boys.

[38:56] >> Your brothers look great.

[38:58] >> Thank you guys.

[38:58] >> We love you, too. Everything's going to

[39:00] be fine.

[39:01] >> They can't see you, but they can feel

[39:03] that they love you. Your your sons know

[39:05] that they're doing well. And Sarah, your

[39:07] brothers know how you feel about them,

[39:09] and we're very happy you're able to

[39:10] share a little time together here with

[39:12] us. That's nice. On a Thanksgiving day,

[39:14] when we come back, Mel Gibson is going

[39:16] to talk to Diane Sawyer about his new

[39:18] movie, his real life drama, and how he

[39:23] addiction. We'll be back in a moment.

[42:31] And now to Mel Gibson. His upcoming film

[42:34] Apocalyptto is what he calls a new twist

[42:37] on an oldfashioned chase movie. It's

[42:39] about the downfall of the Mayan Empire,

[42:41] and in what's becoming a Gibson

[42:43] trademark, there's not a word of English

[42:46] in it. Diane Sawyer talked with Mel

[42:48] Gibson about the film and the lessons

[42:50] he's learned since that anti-Semitic

[42:52] tirade last summer. Here's a preview of

[42:54] Diane's interview, which airs in full

[42:56] tonight on Prime Time.

[43:01] It is a film about values and the

[43:03] mystery of a great civilization that

[43:06] devoured its resources and vanished. A

[43:09] lesson for today. Why do people ain't

[43:12] goldplated toilets today? Why do you

[43:14] need a Hummer in downtown LA? Because

[43:17] you can. Disposable razors. You can

[43:19] understand but disposable telephones.

[43:23] >> They got them. It's like I use it for a

[43:25] month and throw it away. It's

[43:27] conspicuous consumption. as we can.

[43:29] >> I have to confess I have been in a

[43:31] goldplated toilet, but that was at my

[43:33] agent's house.

[43:36] >> And Gibson also takes us through what he

[43:38] says he's learned since that

[43:39] anti-semitic outburst and his four

[43:42] months sober. By the way, in Hollywood,

[43:46] everyone has always known that if you're

[43:48] in trouble, Gibson is the person who

[43:50] will always come to help.

[43:52] >> Courtney Love came by the studio the

[43:53] other day.

[43:54] >> How is she?

[43:55] >> She says she's doing well. She was holed

[43:57] up in a hotel room with her suppliers.

[44:00] He intervened.

[44:01] >> But she told the story. I said it

[44:02] wouldn't have happened if you hadn't

[44:03] come by.

[44:04] >> Oh, I don't know. I think I think that

[44:07] she deserves the credit for that.

[44:08] Sometimes it takes a tap on the

[44:10] shoulder. I've had him. I'm just u there

[44:14] at the right time. Me and another guy

[44:16] were banging on our door.

[44:17] >> Well, or did you just go?

[44:18] >> Not that well. She was like, "Go away."

[44:20] >> Mel kept coming to the door with this

[44:22] cheesy grin going, "Hi." Hey. She

[44:24] slammed the door in his face, but he was

[44:26] determined to get her druggy entourage

[44:28] away. His stroke of genius.

[44:30] Cheeseburgers.

[44:31] >> Cheeseburgers.

[44:32] >> Cheeseburgers. Something.

[44:33] >> And they ran off to have a cheeseburger

[44:36] with Mel Gibson.

[44:37] >> At that moment, an expert counselor got

[44:40] Courtney Love to rehab.

[44:41] >> It's good to see a brother or a sister

[44:43] get up and and um and get it together

[44:47] and sort of move on in a good way. So,

[44:50] that's good. She might have to drag my

[44:52] ass out of the gutter one day.

[44:55] And that happens. You know, it's like

[44:58] the seessaw thing.

[45:00] All of Diane's interview with Mel Gibson

[48:32] >> We saw this father and son when they

[48:34] went off to war. The tears, the hugs,

[48:37] the pride. Now months later, miles away

[48:40] from their loved ones, we share

[48:42] Thanksgiving dinner in Iraq with them.

[48:44] Tonight on World News with Charles

[48:46] Gibson.

[48:49] After you travel the globe making

[48:51] history, unveiling the seven new wonders

[48:54] of the world, what do you ever do for an

[48:56] encore? How about revealing the allnew

[48:58] eighth wonder? Thousands and thousands

[49:00] of Americans voted on what the eighth

[49:02] new wonder should be. And this Friday,

[49:04] prepare to be amazed as it's unveiled

[49:06] live only on Good Morning America.

[49:12] >> Traditionally on Thanksgiving, turkey of

[49:14] course rules the day. But for those who

[49:15] don't have a taste for turkey, that

[49:17] means you have to fill up on stuffing

[49:18] and sweet potatoes, but no turkey, of

[49:21] course. But not anymore to the great

[49:22] relief of turkeys everywhere. There's an

[49:24] alternative. And we sent ABC's Neil

[49:27] Carlinsky to do a taste test.

[49:30] If Norman Rockwell's deliciously

[49:32] inviting portrait of Thanksgiving dinner

[49:34] looks good to you, prepare yourself for

[49:36] something completely different. Here,

[49:39] Thanksgiving begins with a plop of goo

[49:42] that will be transformed into thousands

[49:44] of turkey-like tofu loaves for a

[49:47] Thanksgiving feast that would leave the

[49:48] pilgrims at Plymouth Rock scratching

[49:50] their heads.

[49:51] >> The texture is what's really magical

[49:53] about the turkey.

[50:00] Oregon processing plant is the

[50:02] birthplace of the toeki, a vegetarian

[50:05] Thanksgiving lover's delight that's

[50:07] grown so big in recent years, it's

[50:09] carved out its own slice of popular

[50:11] culture.

[50:12] >> I, for one, I love the tofu toe furky

[50:15] toe bagel with cream to cheese.

[50:19] >> The bird itself, at least they call it a

[50:22] bird, is made with organic soybeans and

[50:24] comes out looking like an edible Nerf

[50:26] ball injected with stuffing in the

[50:28] middle. My first vegetarian feast. Is

[50:31] that right?

[50:32] >> The question is, does taste anything

[50:35] like turkey?

[50:36] >> I'm not a tofu eater. I know what turkey

[50:39] tastes like. This is not turkey. It is

[50:41] good,

[50:43] mostly.

[50:45] >> It turns out the real trick here isn't

[50:47] about imitating turkey so much as

[50:49] finding a place at the table for a group

[50:51] of people who felt left out until now.

[50:54] >> So, what did you eat for Thanksgiving

[50:56] before to Furky?

[50:57] >> Uh, nothing.

[50:59] It was it was a sad and lonely day for

[51:02] me.

[51:03] >> With steady sales growth every year, the

[51:05] bets are out on the company's next

[51:07] meatless meat creation. Could Tofuna be

[51:10] next?

[51:14] Oregon.

[51:16] >> And speaking of unconventional

[51:18] Thanksgiving treats, we've got some

[51:19] Thanksgiving beverages here, which are

[51:22] anything but traditional.

[51:23] >> I'm still feeling sick from take a look

[51:25] at this. You're going to like this. This

[51:26] is turkey. Uh, these are sodas that

[51:28] taste like Thanksgiving to you. And we

[51:30] got one here. That's

[51:31] >> That's ant acid.

[51:33] >> All right, hold on a second.

[51:34] >> Turkey soda.

[51:36] >> Delicious.

[51:38] >> All right, I'm going to try pea

[51:41] >> pea soda.

[51:42] >> That's bad. What do we have here? Which

[51:43] one's this?

[51:44] >> Great.

[51:44] >> Can we just say there are some things

[51:46] that are unnecessary?

[51:49] >> Turkey soda. Is any of this really

[51:51] >> necessary? I'm I'm going to pour this

[51:52] for you. Some dinner roll.

[51:54] >> Oh, you got to be All right. Listen,

[51:55] let's go back to a real turkey. We got

[51:57] Sarah Molton downstairs. Remember, we

[51:58] have that 42minute clock to see if the

[52:00] Turbo Chef can cook it. How we doing?

[52:02] >> Oh, let's take a look. Oh my god, look

[52:04] at how brown that is. And it's only got

[52:06] a few minutes left. Wow.

[52:11] >> The votes were counted. And your Big Lot

[57:54] >> The 911 for your Thanksgiving dinner

[57:56] disasters

[57:57] >> today at 9:00.

[58:00] >> Good morning. This is K2 News, the

[58:02] spirit of the Northwest.

[58:05] >> Good morning everyone. It is 7:58. I'm

[58:07] Helen Rapis. Here's what's making news

[58:09] this Thanksgiving. New this morning, at

[58:11] least two people have been killed in an

[58:13] accident south of Albany. The accident

[58:15] happened this morning on Highway 34 just

[58:18] west of I5. The westbound lanes on I-5

[58:21] are closed, but a detour has been set up

[58:23] for eastbound traffic. Oregon State

[58:25] Police, ODOT, and local emergency crews

[58:27] are also on the scene. Also new this

[58:30] morning, a two alarm fire broke out at a

[58:32] Northeast Portland apartment complex. It

[58:34] happened at the Parkway Garden

[58:35] Apartments located on Northeast Sandy

[58:37] Boulevard and 142nd Avenue. Portland

[58:41] Fire spotted the scene shortly before

[58:43] 6:30 this morning and managed to get it

[58:45] under control within a short time. No

[58:48] one was hurt. And to try to make sure

[58:50] things stay safe on the road, Oregon

[58:52] State Patrols will have extra troopers

[58:54] on duty today. Crowds, bad weather, and

[58:57] bad decisions by drivers can make the

[58:59] road exceptionally dangerous. An onboard

[59:02] camera caught one man tailgating and

[59:05] going 20 miles over the speed limit in

[59:07] the rain. Troopers say this time of year

[59:09] it is of course important to slow down

[59:11] and leave plenty of space between you

[59:13] and the driver in front of you. And now

[59:15] Julia has our Thanksgiving forecast.

[59:16] Well, it's going to be a little showery

[59:17] this morning. We are going to see some

[59:19] uh strong showers in some spots. And of

[59:20] course, over the mountains, we're

[59:21] dealing with a heavy snow warning. Lots

[59:24] of snow. A good 12 ines in some

[59:26] locations has dumped in the mountains

[59:28] over the last 24 hours. And is it is

[59:30] scattered showers here in the northwest

[59:32] throughout much of the morning. Some of

[59:33] those, as you can see, are pretty heavy

[59:34] out near Columbia County and in central

[59:36] Washington County at this hour. This

[59:38] right now, it's 43 degrees in the metro

[59:39] area, 43 in Vancouver, and 43 degrees in

[59:42] Salem. We should reach a high of about

[59:44] 47° this afternoon with rain increasing

[59:47] at times. And your 5-day forecast and

[59:49] 10-day trend tomorrow morning, just

[59:51] scattered showers. If you're headed out

[59:52] shopping, we should see more rain late

[59:53] tomorrow afternoon and into Saturday

[59:55] morning. And a strong storm, a cold

[59:57] storm coming in on Sunday.

[60:05] Got the turkey on the clock this

[60:06] morning. A 12lb turkey. We're trying to

[60:08] cook it in 42 minutes in the new Turbo

[60:11] Chef Turbo oven. We have our food

[60:13] editor, Sarah Molton. She's got her

[60:14] watchful eye, her hand on the not hot

[60:16] stove. She's checking the clock. We're

[60:19] there. And just as important, we know

[60:21] many of you are out there trying to

[60:22] figure out that Thanksgiving Day feast.

[60:24] You have problems. What's going wrong

[60:26] with my stuffing? Why is my turkey still

[60:28] making noise? You can get to our

[60:30] website, abcnews.com, and send in your

[60:33] turkey 911 help calls. Sarah will be

[60:35] answering them later on. And I know I

[60:38] would need that. I could use one of

[60:39] those Turbo Chef ovens, too. It doesn't

[60:41] just cook turkey. Thank you, Sarah. Does

[60:42] Sarah come with the oven?

[60:43] >> Sarah comes with the oven, which is a

[60:45] tough deal that she didn't know about,

[60:47] but you know, that's how it happens.

[60:48] Thanksgiving, got a gift. Good morning,

[60:50] everybody, and happy Thanksgiving to all

[60:53] of you. I'm Chris Cuomo, joined by the

[60:55] one and only Claire Shipman. Robin and

[60:57] Diane are home with their families

[60:59] today, but we're thankful to be with

[61:00] you.

[61:00] >> We are. We are so glad to be here on

[61:02] Thanksgiving. And I'm especially glad

[61:03] this gentleman is holding an umbrella

[61:05] over my head because it is really

[61:07] raining here. The crowds braving the

[61:09] rain, getting ready for the Macy's

[61:10] Thanksgiving Day Parade. You know,

[61:12] Thanksgiving is a time when we're all

[61:14] supposed to get along, especially

[61:16] families. Everybody's supposed to be

[61:17] happy. But teenage girls these days are

[61:20] having an especially hard time getting

[61:21] along. They're called Mean Girls. And

[61:23] coming up later this hour, we're going

[61:25] to look at a new program in Virginia

[61:27] that's helping some of these teens learn

[61:29] to be nice.

[61:32] >> Well, and if and if that doesn't work,

[61:33] you could always take them shopping,

[61:34] right?

[61:35] >> Indeed. The day after Thanksgiving,

[61:37] everybody hits the stores. They call it

[61:39] Black Friday. They say that's because it

[61:41] keeps the stores in the black. I don't

[61:43] think it's a good name. It should be

[61:44] more like Happy Friday cuz everybody's

[61:46] shopping. Or now we can call it value

[61:48] Friday cuz they say that everything's in

[61:50] favor of the re of the shopper this

[61:52] year. Is it that the p everybody's

[61:54] competing? So, it's going to be very

[61:55] good. We're going to show you ways to

[61:56] save money. They're online and even cell

[61:59] phone ways that you can check prices now

[62:01] to stay one step ahead of the stores.

[62:03] Doesn't get better than that. Well, now

[62:05] as it continues to just downpour on us,

[62:07] let's check in on the parades here and

[62:09] around the country with our man Sam

[62:11] Champion who's out there really taking

[62:12] it on the head with rain and wind. Sam,

[62:14] you holding up?

[62:15] >> He's got his umbrella.

[62:17] >> He's got his

[62:18] >> Good morning, Claire. Good morning,

[62:19] Chris. We're standing on 77th Street

[62:21] right on Central Park West where

[62:23] everybody kind of gathers together to

[62:24] get the parade kicked off. I've got part

[62:26] of the Macy's band right here. I've got

[62:28] part of what the Tom Turkey. You guys

[62:29] are are pilgrims this morning.

[62:32] >> All right. And we're from all over.

[62:34] Basically, we're all kind of We've got

[62:35] part of a We even have some clowns in

[62:37] the background now kind of gathering up.

[62:39] This is where it's all kind of pulling

[62:40] together in this area.

[62:44] >> There are more than 10,000 marchers.

[62:46] We've got nine marching bands. We've got

[62:48] balloons. What? More than a dozen of the

[62:49] giant balloons. And the word on the wind

[62:51] criteria is that we've just had gusts

[62:53] anywhere from 17 to 20 mph. So, we feel

[62:56] pretty good. Our temperature is about

[62:57] 41° right now. Everything's feeling

[63:00] really nice. Well, we're a little bit

[63:02] wet, but other than that, everything's

[63:04] in pretty good shape. So, let's see. Uh,

[63:07] we've got other parades around the

[63:08] nation that are a little bit drier than

[63:10] we are, gang.

[63:12] And, as a matter of fact, we're going to

[63:14] take a look at some of those pictures.

[63:15] It may look a little prettier, but it

[63:17] couldn't be any more fun in Chicago.

[63:19] Alan Kashevsky and Jan Janet Davies, are

[63:21] you guys in the dry or in the wet?

[63:24] >> Oh my goodness. We're in the dry. Big

[63:26] time dry. and everything you said. We've

[63:29] got that in the parade here in Chicago.

[63:31] But we have great temperatures. It's

[63:32] going to be

[63:34] >> close to 60 today.

[63:35] >> That's going to be quite a change from

[63:36] last year. We were like 15 degrees when

[63:38] the parade started last year. Look at

[63:39] this group. They are ready to go. We've

[63:41] got the the Elvis spectacular here. The

[63:43] Tambuli dancers are ready to go. Grimace

[63:45] and Birdie from McDonald's. It's going

[63:47] to be a great morning out here. And some

[63:48] of my favorites over here. It's the

[63:49] precision lawn chair marching dads of

[63:51] course are here as well. And the Jesse

[63:54] White tumblers. They are they're ready

[63:55] to go. We're going to have a terrific

[63:56] day here in Chicago and hope you guys do

[63:58] in New York and elsewhere too.

[63:59] >> Okay, let's go back to you Sam in New

[64:01] York.

[64:02] >> Okay, Alan Jan, I'm We're just a little

[64:05] bit jealous, but okay, we're still

[64:06] having fun out here.

[64:10] >> We checked out the latest radar and we

[64:11] will of course give you the complete

[64:13] weather forecast for the parade. But

[64:14] first, let's go to all the news of your

[64:16] Thanksgiving day. Ron Clayborn's got

[64:18] that. Ron,

[64:19] >> Sam, thank you very much, sir. And good

[64:20] morning, everyone. Well, while most of

[64:22] us will be able to enjoy Thanksgiving

[64:24] with our families, nearly 200,000

[64:26] servicemen and women are in the war zone

[64:28] in Iraq and elsewhere away from their

[64:30] loved ones. But at least the troops are

[64:32] enjoying a traditional turkey dinner

[64:34] with all the fixings from home. And we

[64:37] have breaking news out of Iraq. A

[64:39] staggering death toll in Baghdad's

[64:40] Solder City. A series of suicide

[64:42] bombings and murder attacks have killed

[64:44] at least 144 people and wounded more

[64:46] than 200. The coordinated blast came at

[64:49] 15inute intervals starting at mid-after

[64:50] afternoon local time. The first bomb

[64:52] went off in a vegetable market, killing

[64:54] 10 people.

[64:57] With millions of people on the road for

[64:59] the holiday, the government is recalling

[65:01] over 300,000 cars. More than half are

[65:03] Volvos from model years 1999 through

[65:06] 2002. They have a computer glitch

[65:09] severely limiting the car speed. Also on

[65:11] the list, 05 and '06 Chrysler Pacificas,

[65:14] 2007 Chrysler Sebrings, and 2007 Ford

[65:17] Crown Victorias and Mercury Grand Mares.

[65:22] Keeping unweighted weight off is uh

[65:24] might may not be as easy as getting more

[65:26] sleep. Well, it may be as easy getting

[65:27] more sleep. A new study finds that

[65:29] sleepd deprived middle-aged women put on

[65:31] more pounds than those who get at least

[65:33] 7 hours of shut Eye every night. Doctors

[65:36] can't pinpoint a reason, but research

[65:37] suggests that sleep affects hormones

[65:39] that control appetite and metabolism.

[65:42] Pope Benedict makes his debut today as

[65:44] Italy's newest top model. That's right.

[65:47] The pontiff's own 2007 calendar is just

[65:50] hitting Italian news stands, featuring

[65:52] 14 original poses. But unlike some other

[65:55] calendars, you won't see any beef cake

[65:57] here. It's all for a good cause.

[65:58] Proceeds will go to a mission in Rwanda.

[66:02] And now to Sam Champion. He's got more

[66:04] weather. I see the resemblance. It's

[66:07] mostly in the hair.

[66:10] >> Oh, sorry, Ron. I was talking to the

[66:12] clowns that are behind us. They're

[66:14] claiming to be three sisters, and we can

[66:16] see the similarity in general. I'm

[66:18] looking around the eyes, the mouth, and

[66:19] there's a little similarity in the hair

[66:21] as well. A little Minnesota and

[66:23] Wisconsin, right, ladies. Now, I got to

[66:25] tell you, it is pouring down rain here,

[66:27] but everybody is so, so psyched. I'm

[66:29] looking at the bands getting ready up

[66:31] Central Park West. So, in case you're

[66:33] looking for the parade forecast, we've

[66:35] got that, too. Here's the way it looks

[66:36] right now. The latest wind gusts in

[66:38] Central Park have been at only about 7

[66:40] mph. Airports though are reporting

[66:42] around the area anywhere from 17 to 20

[66:44] mph. So, we feel pretty good that these

[66:47] balloons are going to go. Uh here's a

[66:49] look at the periods of rain though in

[66:50] the forecast. You already can see that

[66:52] from the pictures. The wind gust up to

[66:54] about 25 miles per hour, we think, but

[66:56] everything seems to be in good shape.

[66:57] That storm continues to crawl up the

[66:59] northeast into New England. Boston,

[67:00] you're going to get a little bit of it

[67:01] tonight and into the day tomorrow. Then

[67:03] it pulls away and it's gorgeous all the

[67:05] way through the Gulf. You've got a

[67:06] beautiful Thanksgiving day. Even in

[67:07] Parade, South Dakota and Pumpkin Center,

[67:10] California at 60°. That's the weather

[67:12] around the nation. Here's what you can

[67:15] expect this morning.

[67:16] >> Good morning everyone. I'm Julia Rat.

[67:18] Happy Thanksgiving to you. We are seeing

[67:19] a heavy snow warning in effect for the

[67:21] Cascades today. Up to 12 ines expected

[67:24] in the mountains. Otherwise, scattered

[67:25] showers here in the valley this morning

[67:26] and then increasing rain later on this

[67:28] afternoon. We should see a high of about

[67:30] 47° with up to about a half an inch of

[67:32] rain total here in the valley today.

[67:34] Tonight, it tapers off to showers. And

[67:36] tomorrow morning, as you head out

[67:37] chopping, it will be just scattered

[67:38] showers, but on the cool side. Then a

[67:40] strong storm comes in on Sunday. This

[67:42] one is cold and could bring snow levels

[67:44] down to 1,000 ft.

[67:50] >> I have never been in worse weather

[67:52] conditions with happier people. Claire.

[67:55] >> All right, Sam. Thank you. In this

[67:57] morning's American Family, we turn to a

[67:59] problem facing our children that some

[68:01] experts say is reaching epidemic

[68:03] proportions. Every day, an estimated

[68:05] 160,000

[68:07] kids miss school because of fear of

[68:10] attack or intimidation by other kids.

[68:13] Six out of 10 teens say they witness a

[68:15] bullying incident each day. But we found

[68:18] one innovative school counselor from

[68:19] Alexandria, Virginia, who's working to

[68:21] turn the tide.

[68:24] The telltale signs, vicious gossiping,

[68:26] the lunchroom snub, or worse, a

[68:29] schoolyard brawl.

[68:33] Mean girls, just like in the movies, are

[68:36] rampant and literally fighting to fit

[68:38] in.

[68:41] >> I just killed my best friend

[68:43] >> and your worst enemy.

[68:45] >> Same difference.

[68:47] >> As girls have learned to become more

[68:49] assertive over the years, their behavior

[68:50] has become more aggressive. Nearly 10%

[68:53] say they've been in a physical fight in

[68:55] the last 12 months.

[68:58] >> If children aren't feeling safe in

[68:59] school, they can't learn.

[69:01] >> Do you think there are friendships that

[69:03] should end?

[69:04] >> To combat any bad behavior between

[69:06] girls, school counselor Amy Dunn has

[69:08] created a course, Chicks and Clicks, for

[69:11] her elementary school in Virginia. Girls

[69:14] need this because they need to leave

[69:16] this group with a strong skill set that

[69:19] will help them navigate through all of

[69:20] the social challenges and the social

[69:23] pressures.

[69:23] >> My goal is to not be so bossy to my best

[69:26] friend.

[69:27] >> With the constant competition among

[69:28] teens, the course is designed to build

[69:30] self-esteem, self-confidence, and better

[69:33] friendships, which some have done

[69:34] students lack. I picked this class

[69:38] because I I know that I have trouble

[69:42] picking the right friends. I'm having

[69:44] like fights and cuz I even had a fight

[69:47] with my friend Emily.

[69:48] >> They set rules.

[69:50] >> Chicks and Clicks focuses on conflict

[69:52] resolution as Dunn guides them through

[69:55] real life situations of teen gossip and

[69:57] rumors.

[69:58] >> Yeah, but no bullying.

[69:59] >> Okay.

[70:00] >> Some people ask other girls, "Why is

[70:02] Anita not talking to me? Why is Ana

[70:04] talking bad about me?" And that

[70:05] increases the gossip, right? So it's I

[70:08] really like Amanda that you decided to

[70:10] go talk to the person directly.

[70:12] >> Fickle friends.

[70:13] >> What do you try first to resolve your

[70:16] problem

[70:16] >> and bullies?

[70:17] >> What would your friend do that you would

[70:19] say, "Wow, that really crossed the

[70:20] line."

[70:21] >> Bully.

[70:22] >> Some friendships don't work over there

[70:25] >> and you have to make new friends.

[70:27] >> I hope that they can look inside

[70:29] themselves and just be more um aware of

[70:33] their feelings. They know how to

[70:34] identify them. They know how to express

[70:35] them in a safe way, in a productive way.

[70:38] >> And the good friendship lessons are

[70:39] paying off.

[70:40] >> If I'm around them and I can't learn in

[70:43] school and I can't be myself, then

[70:46] that's not a good friend for me.

[70:48] >> We're friends now and we talk to each

[70:50] other now and we call each other and

[70:52] we're communicating now better than we

[70:54] did before we were fighting.

[70:57] >> Joining us now for more on what moms and

[70:59] dads could do to help their kids is our

[71:01] parenting contributor Annette Murphy.

[71:02] Ann, thanks so much for being with us.

[71:04] >> Nice to be here.

[71:05] >> Really tough for parents and there are

[71:06] some specific things actually that

[71:08] parents shouldn't do, aren't there?

[71:10] >> Well, they absolutely shouldn't do all

[71:12] the talking. I think it's so natural.

[71:14] Your kid comes home, she's hurting, you

[71:16] go on a tirade. I'm going to call the

[71:18] other parents. I'm going to call this

[71:19] kid. And that's not what you want to do.

[71:21] You really need to do more listening

[71:23] than talking. And in part just to find

[71:25] out what's going on.

[71:26] >> And don't tell them it's no big deal. I

[71:28] read

[71:28] >> do not belittle this. It can seem like

[71:30] they're making a huge deal out of no

[71:32] nothing but and or you know you can

[71:34] remember oh well I went through this or

[71:36] all kids go through this or for boys the

[71:39] message often is you know suck it up be

[71:41] tough and those are not good messages

[71:43] because it also effectively closes the

[71:45] door on future conversations.

[71:47] >> So how can parents help? How can they

[71:50] help their kids learn to deal with this?

[71:52] Well, I think one of the messages in

[71:53] this program is and one of the things

[71:55] that she has taught these girls is to

[71:57] put their friendships in perspective so

[71:59] that she actually has them keep a

[72:01] timeline um and kind of graph the ups

[72:04] and downs of a relationship. So that

[72:06] part of what you're trying to teach your

[72:07] child is what are the signs of a good

[72:09] friendship because you want them to be

[72:12] able to develop the kind of critical

[72:13] thinking. Not you're saying that kid's

[72:15] no good for you. So in other words, if a

[72:17] kid, you know, ices you on Monday, but

[72:20] you see that over the course of two

[72:21] weeks using this timeline that actually

[72:24] by Friday she usually lets you sit with

[72:25] her at the lunch table. It's progress.

[72:28] And you know, I think that giving kids

[72:30] perspective, teaching them that they

[72:31] can't change the other person's

[72:33] behavior. They can only manage their own

[72:36] reaction. And that's a really important

[72:38] life lesson. And I think we we often

[72:40] overlook that. that teaching them coping

[72:43] skills, that's a big part of what a lot

[72:44] of these anti-bullying programs do. The

[72:47] bullying is not going anywhere. In fact,

[72:49] it's going online more and more. Um, but

[72:52] you can control how you handle it.

[72:54] >> All right, very tough, but thanks for

[72:55] the good advice, Amash Murphy. We

[72:57] appreciate that. And you can find more

[72:59] information on teen bullying at

[73:00] abcnews.com. And next, it is the season

[73:04] to shop. We'll show you the latest

[73:06] high-tech way to get the season's

[73:07] hottest gifts.

[73:11] Good Morning America's American family

[73:13] is brought to you by Kmart, where

[73:15] Christmas comes together.

[73:28] Beat the crowds. Shop Kmart all day

[73:31] Thanksgiving. Store-wide savings

[73:33] Thursday only at Kmart.

[73:36] Now you take a bath because you want to,

[73:38] not because your mom makes you.

[73:40] Introducing Johnson's Nourishing Care

[73:42] Wash. It moisturizes for 24 hours to

[73:45] give your grown-up skin back its baby

[73:47] softness.

[73:52] >> The last time your skin was this soft,

[73:55] you had to be in bed by 7:30.

[73:57] Introducing Johnson's Nourishing Renewal

[73:59] Lotion with vitamins and green tea.

[74:01] Clinically shown to restore youthful

[74:03] baby softness. Cholesterol. It can come

[74:07] from fetuccini alfredo, but also from

[74:10] your grandpa Alfredo, from barbecue ribs

[74:13] and from your grandma Barbie. A healthy

[74:16] diet is important. When that's not

[74:18] enough, adding vytorine can help.

[74:20] Cholesterol comes from two sources: food

[74:23] and family. Vtorin treats two sources.

[74:26] Only Vtorin helps block the absorption

[74:28] of cholesterol from food and reduces the

[74:30] cholesterol your body makes naturally

[74:32] based on family history. Btorine was

[74:34] also proven in clinical studies to lower

[74:36] bad cholesterol more than Lipur alone.

[74:38] Btorin is not for everyone, including

[74:40] people with liver problems, women who

[74:42] are nursing, pregnant, or may become

[74:44] pregnant. Unexplained muscle pain or

[74:45] weakness could be a sign of a rare but

[74:47] serious side effect. Byin may interact

[74:49] with other medicines or certain foods,

[74:51] increasing your risk of getting this

[74:52] serious side effect. Simple blood tests

[74:54] are needed to check for liver problems.

[74:56] So, eat right, stay active. But if

[74:58] that's not enough, ask your doctor about

[75:00] adding vtorin, two sources of

[75:02] cholesterol. Treat them both with

[75:04] Vtorin.

[75:07] >> Oh, you're home early.

[75:10] >> What's the point? Everyone's giving all

[75:12] those great gifts from Home Depot this

[75:13] year.

[75:18] Oh, where's the remote?

[75:21] This year, the Home Depot is the place

[75:23] for great gifts like a Robi Onep OnePlus

[75:25] drill and circular saw combo for $49. Or

[75:28] a rigid 12gallon wet dry back. It's just

[75:30] $27 at The Home Depot.

[75:35] Lance Armstrong for Bristol Meyer Squib.

[75:37] >> Remember me, cancer? You gave me less

[75:40] than a 50/50 chance to live. You made me

[75:43] suffer. My mom, too. But you made me

[75:47] smarter and more determined and a

[75:50] believer in miracles.

[75:52] Remember me, cancer. You made me what I

[75:55] am today.

[75:58] >> Your will, our medicines. Together we

[76:00] can fight the serious diseases. Bristol

[76:02] Meyer Squib. Together we can prevail.

[76:05] >> Toys R Us presents the low, really low,

[76:07] super low, lowest prices ever sale. All

[76:10] day deals this Friday and Saturday.

[76:11] Plus, Friday Door Busters 5:00 a.m. to

[76:13] noon. Our lowest prices ever on toys

[76:16] from the hottest brands. Only at Toys R

[76:18] Us, the world's greatest toy store.

[76:20] >> If you're concerned about catching a

[76:22] cold or the flu this season, here's an

[76:24] idea. Move to a deserted island and

[76:26] avoid other people for 6 months.

[76:29] Or just drink a glass of Florida orange

[76:31] juice every day.

[76:32] >> Give your immune system the nutrients it

[76:34] needs.

[76:37] >> The word Thanksgiving comes from what

[76:38] language?

[76:39] >> I think maybe.

[76:43] >> Uh, German, Latin.

[76:45] >> I don't know. I mean,

[76:46] >> I didn't study languages,

[76:47] >> right? We've grown past the pilgrims.

[76:49] >> Way past.

[76:50] >> They're very history book. We're just

[76:52] about friends and family and giving

[76:53] thanks.

[76:53] >> Yeah. I don't think about the pilgrims

[76:55] >> at all. Right. They don't come up.

[76:57] >> When is Thanksgiving?

[76:59] >> Oh, it's like the last Thursday, isn't

[77:00] it?

[77:00] >> It's 23rd.

[77:02] >> I guess the system says that this is a,

[77:04] you know, a day where we commemorate our

[77:06] thanks to the great creator and to our

[77:08] fellow man.

[77:09] >> When you say the system says we do it on

[77:11] this day,

[77:12] >> what is the system?

[77:14] >> Oh, I'm still trying to find out. The

[77:16] turkey was not the original bird of

[77:18] Thanksgiving.

[77:20] >> True or false?

[77:20] >> True.

[77:21] >> You know what I would say? True. Can

[77:23] turkeys fly? Do you think?

[77:26] >> I think maybe when no one's looking.

[77:29] >> When nobody's looking. Anyway,

[77:31] Thanksgiving is a great day for a lot of

[77:33] reasons. We all know what happens the

[77:35] day after Thanksgiving, right? You wake

[77:37] up, you take a deep breath, and you try

[77:39] and get a little bit bigger pair of

[77:40] pants, wonder why you drank soda that

[77:42] tastes like sweet potatoes, and then you

[77:44] look for your wallet because it's time

[77:46] to let the full contact shopping begin.

[77:49] Thanks to some new technology we have,

[77:50] you can avoid the crowds and you can get

[77:52] the best prices. As part of our

[77:54] partnership with the Wall Street

[77:56] Journal, we're joined by editor Wendy

[77:57] Bounds, who will help us save money with

[77:59] some technology and just some good

[78:01] oldfashioned knowhow. Right now, Black

[78:03] Friday, right?

[78:04] >> I got to change my shoes for this. No

[78:06] heels for running out there. This is the

[78:08] year of the deal. This is the year that

[78:10] technology has finally caught up with uh

[78:12] you and I and made it possible for us to

[78:14] find the best deals out there with just

[78:16] the help of a cell phone, help of a

[78:17] website. And tomorrow or at midnight it

[78:19] all begins.

[78:20] >> So you've got the technological tools to

[78:22] help through this. One is a cell phone

[78:25] is a cell phone.

[78:26] >> It's called F call.

[78:27] >> Frugal frugal caller. Exactly. And

[78:29] what's great about this is again you

[78:31] don't have to be that techsavvy. How

[78:32] many times have you been in a store, you

[78:34] looked at an item, an iPod, what have

[78:36] you. thought, "God, I wonder if I can

[78:37] get this cheaper online." But what would

[78:39] you have to do? Go home, log on the

[78:41] internet. By then, you've already left.

[78:42] You've burned the gas. So, what you do

[78:44] on the cell phone, you call 188 do call,

[78:47] and it will run through, check the

[78:49] internet sites for you that it's

[78:50] partnered with, and come back to you and

[78:51] say, "Hi, Chris. Lowest price on this is

[78:54] so and so. The highest price is this."

[78:55] And you can make a decision right then

[78:56] and there to hit buy. Or you can try, as

[78:59] I did last night in a major electronics

[79:00] buy store, to go and haggle with them,

[79:02] and maybe you'll walk away saving a few

[79:04] hundred bucks. They were willing to

[79:05] negotiate with me. They did on a H 42 in

[79:08] HD TV plasma screen and I found it for

[79:11] 200 bucks less at a store online and

[79:13] they were going to consider it. So 200

[79:14] bucks. Now we're talking,

[79:15] >> right? Although you know you can see the

[79:16] lines like stacking up. But this really

[79:18] has brought home technology and and

[79:20] price comparison shopping to the average

[79:22] person.

[79:23] >> So you can make a phone call. You also

[79:24] have a website, right? There's what's

[79:26] called Slifter.

[79:27] >> There's Slifter is another one. It's

[79:28] still in beta testing right now. But

[79:30] what's interesting about this is you

[79:32] often want to go sort of shop around

[79:33] stores in your area, but who has the

[79:35] time to go drive around? Slifter, you

[79:38] plug in your zip code and then it will

[79:40] canvas the stores for you, come back,

[79:41] tell you if they have the item, if they

[79:43] don't have the item.

[79:44] >> Friday is the big day, but Monday is now

[79:46] Cyber Monday. Shopping online, I love

[79:48] it. Anything has to do with shopping, I

[79:50] love. What are a couple of the little

[79:51] techniques we can use, places we can go

[79:53] for help?

[79:53] >> I think Cyber Monday is an interesting

[79:54] one. And it was sort of a trumped up

[79:56] holiday last year to by internet

[79:57] retailers to meet with Black Friday. But

[80:00] what it has become is a self-fulfilling

[80:02] prophecy. Go to cyber Monday.com. You'll

[80:05] see the deals on shipping, the deals on

[80:07] uh saving money for gift wrapping, all

[80:09] the different things that are prices off

[80:11] that will be online on that. Black

[80:12] Friday has some of that too. And you

[80:14] have some of these hot toys you want to

[80:16] know about. You should stroke this one.

[80:17] We should get security for these things.

[80:19] >> These are the hot toys. Tough to get.

[80:20] Why?

[80:21] >> Very tough to get. Got a confluence of

[80:22] events here. uh they weren't the

[80:24] manufacturers weren't that optimistic

[80:26] this summer. Remember gas prices were

[80:28] high. You know, they weren't thinking we

[80:30] were going to spend. But things are

[80:31] looking up now. It looks like Christmas

[80:32] and the holiday season is going to be

[80:34] okay. So, China also where a lot of

[80:36] these are produced, there were labor

[80:37] shortages, rolling blackouts that made

[80:39] it hard, but they've been ramping up for

[80:41] Elmo.

[80:42] >> I won't touch Elmo.

[80:44] >> So, what can I do to get some of these

[80:45] if they're so tough to get?

[80:46] >> eBay is one place to look. Uh, what I

[80:48] like about Elmo, there is actually a

[80:50] website called tmxttracker.com

[80:54] which will help you find where Elmo's

[80:56] are in your neighborhood. And eBay is

[80:58] selling tips $3 to $5 to tell you where

[81:00] to go, what the Elmo boxes look like,

[81:02] how to haggle with a retailer to find

[81:04] out if you can sort of get them to slip

[81:05] you one on the side. That's a good place

[81:07] to go and look for these as well.

[81:08] >> These are great tips. Now, I know a lot

[81:09] of people like, "Wait, which was the

[81:11] website? What's the number?" You can go

[81:12] on to our website, abcnews.com. You can

[81:14] get all Wendy's tips right there and you

[81:16] get the information that you need. Now,

[81:18] I'm liking this because I need one of

[81:20] these for my daughter for sure.

[81:21] >> Off the brother's Grims, fairy tales.

[81:23] >> And this thing, do you guys remember

[81:24] what this does? Let's see if we can get

[81:25] a little action out of this guy. How do

[81:26] I get him to work? He's got nothing for

[81:35] You got nothing. It's 21 minutes past

[81:37] the hour. Happy Thanksgiving. When we

[81:38] come back, we're going to have Joel

[81:40] Seagull with his review of Bobby. You'll

[81:41] want to see it. Maybe not you.

[81:43] >> What do you got? What do you think?

[81:44] >> If you're a man over 50, it's time to

[81:47] take the Avidard quiz. Are you always

[81:49] going?

[81:53] Do you have trouble going?

[81:56] Are you going, going, going at night?

[82:00] Maybe you think you have a going

[82:02] problem, but what if it's a growing

[82:04] problem? What if it's not your bladder,

[82:06] but instead you have an enlarging

[82:07] prostate? 50% of men over 50 do. And you

[82:10] may be able to do something about that

[82:12] going and growing. With Avdart, most

[82:14] medicines only treat symptoms. Avdart

[82:17] with time actually shrinks the prostate

[82:19] and improves urinary symptoms. Only your

[82:21] doctor can tell if your symptoms are

[82:23] from an enlarged prostate and not a more

[82:25] serious condition such as prostate

[82:26] cancer. So have regular prostate exams.

[82:29] Avidart is for men only. Women should

[82:30] not take or handle Avidart due to the

[82:32] risk of a specific birth defect. Tell

[82:34] your doctor if you have liver disease.

[82:36] Rarely sexual side effects, tenderness

[82:42] your growing problem.

[85:06] >> Good morning and a happy Thanksgiving to

[85:08] you. I'm Helen Rapis. Here is what's

[85:10] making news this morning. New this

[85:12] morning, a two alarm fire broke out at a

[85:14] Northeast Portland apartment complex. It

[85:16] happened at the Parkway Garden

[85:18] Apartments located on Northeast Sandy

[85:20] Boulevard on 142nd Avenue. Portland Fire

[85:23] responded to the scene shortly before

[85:25] 6:30 this morning and managed to get it

[85:27] under control in a short time. No one

[85:30] was hurt. Snow blanketed mountain

[85:32] passes, making holiday travel de and

[85:34] driving much more dangerous. Last night,

[85:36] a large plow cleared snow from Highway

[85:38] 26 near a government camp. We found one

[85:41] driver who lost control and crashed.

[85:44] Overall though, drivers said road

[85:45] conditions on 26 are tolerable. Many

[85:48] drivers have decided to buy new tires.

[85:50] An employee at the Sandy Lewab says that

[85:53] late last night, customers waited a

[85:54] couple of hours for work to be

[85:56] completed. It's

[85:57] >> been really busy today. It's been real

[85:59] steady. Lots of people going up the

[86:01] mountain. Lots of people buying chains

[86:03] getting ready to go uh go on

[86:05] Thanksgiving.

[86:07] >> Now, if you don't bring chains or use

[86:09] tire traction traction tires, you could

[86:11] get a $145 ticket. ODOT says chains or

[86:15] traction tires must be used on WAMIT

[86:18] Pass, Santm Junction, and Sanm Pass. And

[86:21] at government camp, and I5 at Syscus,

[86:23] you must use traction tires or have

[86:25] chains with you. For the latest driving

[86:27] conditions, you can log on to k2.com.

[86:29] But now, let's check in with Julia

[86:31] Radick for our Thanksgiving forecast.

[86:32] >> Well, it is very treacherous up over the

[86:34] mountains this morning. We do have a

[86:35] heavy snow warning in effect there. But

[86:37] first, let's take a live look outside

[86:38] from the Hood River in in the Columbia

[86:40] River Gorge where the sun is trying to

[86:42] peek through this morning. Excuse me. We

[86:45] currently have 45° here in the metro

[86:47] area. Latest look from the Mount Hood

[86:50] camera. This was taken just about a half

[86:52] an hour ago. Some poor fellow down there

[86:54] in the lower left corner is trying to

[86:55] put his chains on.

[86:56] >> Oh, poor guy.

[86:57] >> Yeah, definitely an issue. If you're

[86:58] heading over the mountains this morning,

[86:59] be careful. The snow level is at about

[87:01] 2,000 ft and we continue to see lots of

[87:04] snow. About 8 to 10 ines fell overnight

[87:06] last night and we're seeing scattered

[87:08] showers here in the metro area. Some of

[87:10] them are heavy at times. So here is

[87:12] what's happening. Heavy snow warning in

[87:13] effect for the mountains. Snow level

[87:15] rises to 2500 feet tomorrow. However, we

[87:18] should see less snow, 3 to 6 in. And

[87:20] then on Saturday, 2 to 4 in, but overall

[87:23] every day we should see some

[87:24] accumulation in the mountains. 43 at the

[87:26] moment in Portland, 42 in Salem, 30 43

[87:29] in McMinnville, and 42 in Scapus. In the

[87:32] Rose City, we should pop up to about 47

[87:34] degrees with increasing rain later on

[87:36] today and then it tapers off to showers

[87:38] overnight. We are watching very closely

[87:40] a colder storm system moving in on

[87:42] Sunday. It could bring snow as low as

[87:44] 1,00 or 500 ft Sunday evening. So that

[87:47] will affect travel over the coast range.

[87:50] Keep that in mind. We continue to see

[87:52] wet weather into Monday and it remains

[87:53] cool for most of the week.

[90:14] commercialization. You don't see turkeys

[90:16] all over the place. In fact, they're

[90:17] probably hiding. What about you guys?

[90:20] Thanksgiving. Thumbs up. We love it.

[90:22] Family, love, warmth, and food. We love

[90:26] it.

[90:27] >> We like that.

[90:28] >> And what else do you need? Family,

[90:30] warmth, and food.

[90:31] >> Gloria Estfan, she's completely right. I

[90:34] couldn't agree more. Right. Because

[90:35] that's what it's all about is the

[90:36] eating.

[90:36] >> Eating. Family loving. You know what?

[90:39] That's what Thanksgiving is about. I'm

[90:41] I'm all I'm all for it and we appreciate

[90:43] that for her. And happy Thanksgiving to

[90:45] all of you. I'm Chris Cummel here with

[90:46] the one and only Claire Shipman.

[90:48] >> And I am so thrilled to be here. Thanks

[90:49] for having me here on this Thanksgiving

[90:51] day. Coming up this half hour. When all

[90:53] of that marathon eating is done, chances

[90:55] are you're going to hear the movie

[90:56] theater calling your name because

[90:58] Thanksgiving is a big big time for the

[91:01] movies. The weekend gets huge numbers.

[91:03] Joel Seagull's going to be here with his

[91:05] review of Bobby for us. Really

[91:07] interesting stuff.

[91:07] >> It's very nice. Before you can get to

[91:08] the movies, you got to figure out how to

[91:10] cook that turkey.

[91:11] >> You got problems with your stuffing. You

[91:12] got problems with your sweet potatoes.

[91:13] Your marshmallows are burning. You don't

[91:15] know what to do, but now we have

[91:16] answers. Food editor Sarah Molton is

[91:28] you go to our website. You send in your

[91:30] questions. Now,

[91:31] >> where am I supposed to go now?

[91:34] Um,

[91:35] >> go to

[91:36] >> Ronald.

[91:37] >> Ron.

[91:38] >> Ron.

[91:38] >> He hates being called Ronald. We're

[91:40] going to go for the news now to Ron

[91:42] Clayborn. Ron.

[91:43] >> All right, Chris. Thanks very much. Good

[91:45] morning everyone. In Iraq this morning,

[91:47] USled troops were able to help beat back

[91:49] an attack on the health ministry in

[91:51] Baghdad. But we have breaking news now

[91:53] from the Iraqi capital. At least 144

[91:56] people have been killed in a coordinated

[91:58] series of suicide bombings and murder

[92:00] attacks. More than 200 people have been

[92:02] wounded and some Texas soldiers who were

[92:05] lucky enough to be returning home for

[92:07] two weeks of RNR were greeted Wednesday

[92:10] by the famous Rockets. The highkicking

[92:12] Radio City dance troop also helped send

[92:14] off some other troops who are on their

[92:16] way to the war zone in Iraq. A friend

[92:18] says former Russian spy Alexander

[92:20] Lipenko's heart failed overnight and

[92:22] he's now on life support. The hospital

[92:24] will only say that there's been a

[92:26] dramatic deterioration in his condition

[92:28] and that the cause of his illness is

[92:30] still quote unclear unquote. Many

[92:32] residents of Danvers, Massachusetts are

[92:34] homeless for the holiday. A massive

[92:36] chemical plant explosion forced some

[92:38] residents from their homes until at

[92:39] least tomorrow. Dozens of houses were

[92:42] damaged by the blast, about 25 beyond

[92:45] repair. Officials say it could be weeks

[92:46] before they know the cause of that

[92:48] explosion. And if it's Thanksgiving,

[92:50] then it must be football. But millions

[92:52] of viewers will miss tonight's matchup

[92:54] between the Denver Broncos and the

[92:55] Kansas City Chiefs. Why? Because it's

[92:57] the first ever game airing on the new

[93:00] NFL network. But the league still hasn't

[93:02] reached an agreement with several major

[93:04] cable operators around the country.

[93:06] Well, President and Mrs. Bush are

[93:07] spending a quiet Thanksgiving at Camp

[93:09] David today. Among their guests,

[93:10] Secretary of State Condisa Rice. Dinner

[93:12] will be the traditional one. freerange

[93:15] roasted turkey with cornbread stuffing,

[93:18] zucchini, sweet potato pie, and pumpkin

[93:20] pie. And finally, save some room for

[93:23] dessert. A record setting gingerbread

[93:25] house was built in Minnesota. It took 9

[93:28] days to construct and 1700 work hours.

[93:30] The house is made of, listen to this,

[93:33] 14,000 lb of gingerbread, 4,700 lb of

[93:36] icing, and a ton of candy. That's a

[93:39] stomach ache that's waiting to happen.

[93:41] That's the news at 8:33.

[93:44] Now, time for weather. We turn to Sam

[93:45] Champion, who's along the parade route

[93:47] for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

[93:49] Sam,

[93:51] >> good morning, Ron. Good morning,

[93:52] everyone. And happy Thanksgiving, by the

[93:54] way, everybody. Big shout. Happy

[93:56] Thanksgiving. Uh, we're standing

[93:58] actually and we are along the parade

[93:59] route with a little bit of the Wild

[94:01] West. We've got a cactus. We've got a

[94:03] bunch of cowboys. Wait a minute. If

[94:04] you're a cactus, isn't this rain

[94:06] bothering you a little bit?

[94:07] >> Just a little. I don't need this much.

[94:10] >> And you know what? We just found out

[94:11] that actually their costumes are going

[94:13] to absorb some of this rain. So, they'll

[94:15] be carrying around some of the extra

[94:16] weight as they march along the parade.

[94:18] But nobody seems to be bothered by it.

[94:20] And we're all getting ready to go. Hey,

[94:21] let's hit the boards in case where you

[94:23] are maybe a little drier than where we

[94:25] are this morning. Well, let's show you

[94:26] what your forecast is like. Mostly

[94:28] around the nation there is dry weather.

[94:30] There's one or two spots in basically

[94:31] the corners, the northwestern corner and

[94:33] the southeastern corner and all along

[94:34] the mid-Atlantic toward the northeast

[94:36] that will have some issues today. the

[94:38] northwest with a little bit of rain

[94:39] along the coast, some gusty winds, and

[94:41] all the way into the inner mountain

[94:43] west, much above 4,000 feet, you're

[94:44] going to be picking up some snow today.

[94:46] Higher elevations are really going to be

[94:48] stacking up some snow. And all the way

[94:49] down into the deep south, and by the

[94:51] way, that's Pumpkin Bend, Arkansas at

[94:54] 65°. Also, Pumpkin Town, which I believe

[94:57] uh is it South Carolina or Tennessee?

[94:59] I'm not sure yet. At 63 degrees and it's

[95:01] warm into the south now. Finally,

[95:03] Florida warms up and you got a cold

[95:05] start this week, but it's the

[95:06] temperatures are exactly where they

[95:07] should be, even around the Great Lakes.

[95:09] It's hard to believe that Chicago has a

[95:11] beautiful, beautiful day this time of

[95:13] year. That's the weather around the

[95:14] nation. Here's what you can expect this

[95:16] morning.

[95:17] >> Good morning, everyone. Happy

[95:18] Thanksgiving. Scattered showers will

[95:20] continue this morning and then this

[95:21] afternoon in the valley, we are looking

[95:23] at increasing rain, steadier rain at

[95:25] times. There is still a heavy snow

[95:26] warning in effect for the Cascades

[95:28] through tomorrow. 8 to 12 inches of snow

[95:30] is expected there.

[95:34] Hang on. We got a cowboy birthday. Happy

[95:36] birthday, Stacy. I love you. All right,

[95:39] Stacy. You got it right here from the

[95:41] parade. So, that weather report was

[95:42] brought to you by I forgot.

[95:46] >> Who is it? Sears. Sorry.

[95:49] >> Nice.

[95:50] >> All right. Sam's getting a little too

[95:52] wet out there. Thank you, Sam. The new

[95:54] movie Bobby, about the assassination of

[95:57] Senator Robert Kennedy in 1968, will

[95:59] strike a chord for many movie goers.

[96:01] Many remember that dark day and the

[96:03] entire era because they lived through

[96:05] them. And one of those movie goers is

[96:07] our own entertainment editor Joel

[96:08] Seagull, who is here with a review

[96:10] unlike any other. Joel,

[96:11] >> this is the first time it's happened to

[96:13] me. It's happened to all of us in our

[96:15] real lives. There's a scene in a movie

[96:17] that hits a nerve so personal, powerful,

[96:20] we just lose it. Every once in a while

[96:22] that happens to critics too, just like

[96:24] real people. It happened to be watching

[96:26] Bobby. I think I was watching an

[96:28] excellent movie, but I can't be sure if

[96:30] I was reacting to what I saw on the

[96:32] screen or to my own memories.

[96:36] >> Senator Kennedy, welcome to the

[96:38] Ambassador Hotel.

[96:39] >> Thank you very much.
