[0:03] Billy Graham and Jesse Jackson offer
[0:05] comfort to the victims of Hurricane
[0:07] Andrew as more relief troops arrive.
[0:11] And President Bush and Bill Clinton
[0:12] trade charges on the cost of healthc
[0:14] care reform.
[0:17] This is the CBS Evening News
[0:24] and this is Bob Schaefer reporting. Good
[0:26] evening. The statistics that Hurricane
[0:29] Andrew is leaving behind are almost as
[0:31] unbelievable as the pictures that its
[0:34] destruction brought. Two weeks after it
[0:36] hit, 51 people now known dead. Damage
[0:38] estimates exceed 20 billion dollars. A
[0:41] quarter of a million people are homeless
[0:43] and 150,000 are still without
[0:46] electricity. Again, tonight we begin our
[0:48] coverage in Florida. And Doug Tanell
[0:50] reports. More help arrived in the
[0:52] disaster zone of South Florida today.
[0:54] The Pentagon deployed more soldiers,
[0:56] bringing total troop strength here to
[0:58] well over 24,000. Two of America's best
[1:01] known religious leaders, Billy Graham
[1:03] and Jesse Jackson, praised a new spirit
[1:06] of unity among victims from different
[1:08] ethnic groups and religions.
[1:12] So many people flooded the area offering
[1:14] help that authorities pleaded with the
[1:16] public to join organized groups. Dade
[1:18] County asked weekend volunteers to meet
[1:20] this morning at staging areas. Bus loads
[1:22] traveled into the hardest hit
[1:24] neighborhoods. For many South
[1:25] Floridaians who had suffered only minor
[1:27] damage, it was a day for a kind of
[1:29] payback.
[1:30] >> My kids all came to help me. So, and I
[1:32] haven't been able to help anybody else
[1:34] yet. So, my turn.
[1:35] >> Business owners ravaged by the hurricane
