[0:01] Still pretty healthy, still growing. The

[0:03] US economy shows surprising new strength

[0:06] in figures out today as consumers come

[0:08] to the rescue. A Hollywood cliffhanger,

[0:11] a possible strike with big consequences

[0:13] for the economy and your TV viewing. The

[0:16] Kerry controversy, fallout from war

[0:19] reports built on body count lies. And

[0:23] the odd couple, can the US and Russia

[0:26] share a space station without driving

[0:29] each other crazy?

[0:35] This is the CBS Evening News with Dan

[0:38] Rather reporting from CBS News

[0:41] headquarters in New York.

[0:43] Good evening. New figures out today

[0:45] dispute talk that the US economy is in

[0:48] or near a recession. There are problems,

[0:50] but today's numbers indicate the record

[0:53] 10-year old economic expansion is

[0:55] continuing. In a surprising report, the

[0:58] government said the economy was growing

[0:59] in the first quarter of this year at an

[1:01] annual rate of 2%. That's twice the rate

[1:05] of the fourth quarter of 2000 and twice

[1:07] what many experts were predicting. 2% is

[1:10] not especially strong growth, but

[1:12] remember, it wasn't long ago that Alan

[1:14] Greenspan was saying he feared the

[1:16] economy had stopped growing altogether.

[1:19] Today's numbers gave Wall Street a

[1:20] boost. The Dow closed up 117 points. The

[1:23] Nasdaq gained 40. Anthony Mason is on

[1:26] the market watch.

[1:29] The economy showed surprising strength

[1:31] in the first quarter and shoppers

[1:33] opening their wallets was the key reason

[1:35] why.

[1:36] The most positive thing that that's

[1:38] going on is the consumers are still out

[1:39] there buying. I mean, they're buying

[1:41] cars and they're buying homes.
