[0:00] Mash week nights at 10:30 on channel 2.
[0:04] >> It was the biggest thing to hit town in
[0:06] quite a while, maybe ever. And people
[0:09] gathered from far and wide in Moadishu
[0:12] to peer over the wall in the direction
[0:15] of the ocean where things were
[0:17] definitely happening at the airport. It
[0:20] was a day that had already seen what
[0:22] must have been the most widely covered
[0:24] marine landing in history. And now
[0:27] gigantic cargo planes were wheeling
[0:29] across the sky and down onto the runway.
[0:33] But perhaps of even greater curiosity to
[0:35] the sightseers in Moadishu was this
[0:38] latest variety of foreign fighters to
[0:41] descend on Somalia. They no sooner
[0:43] arrived than they burrowed into the
[0:45] ground bristling with weapons. The
[0:48] Somali watched the Marines and from the
[0:51] vantage point of the fighting holes, the
[0:54] Marines watched the Somali.
[0:56] Neither group knowing a great deal about
[0:58] the other, but each prepared to show a
[1:01] certain degree of tolerance,
[1:03] understanding, and for the time being at
[1:05] least even sympathy.
[1:08] >> It's kind of hard to keep the Somalians
[1:09] out. They're just We got water. We got
[1:11] resupplied to water today and they're
[1:13] just mobbing us and trying hard. It's
[1:15] kind It's hard to keep them out and it's
[1:17] it's kind of hard to eat in front of
[1:18] them too because they're kind of hungry
[1:20] and stuff, but you just got to be done.
[1:23] >> And as always, when fighting men arrive
[1:25] in a strange place, the initial contacts
[1:28] were made between the young men
[1:31] >> and the childhood they have recently
[1:33] left behind.
[1:44] This is an ABC News Night Line special
