[0:03] The Crown Prince of Camelot, missing and
[0:06] feared dead in a plane crash off
[0:08] Martha's Vineyard. The fate of John F.
[0:10] Kennedy Jr. and his wife Carolyn and her
[0:13] older sister Lauren still unknown at
[0:15] this hour. The only son of our 35th
[0:18] president carried the banner of his
[0:20] family's legacy. As a small boy, John
[0:23] John's brave salute to his father won
[0:26] the hearts of the world. Tonight, an
[0:28] intense air and sea search has the world
[0:31] holding its breath and hoping against
[0:34] hope.
[0:37] This is the CBS Evening News
[0:41] with Dan Rather reporting from CBS News
[0:44] headquarters in New York.
[0:47] >> Good evening. Once again, the Kennedy
[0:49] family is stealing itself tonight to
[0:51] deal with tragedy. After takeoff last
[0:53] night from New Jersey, a small plane
[0:55] carrying 38-year-old John F. Kennedy
[0:57] Jr., his wife, and sister-in-law
[1:00] vanished on approach to the
[1:01] Massachusetts island of Marthur's
[1:03] Vineyard. The search goes on at this
[1:05] hour for survivors, but as darkness
[1:08] descends over the ocean, chances of
[1:10] finding anyone alive or fading like the
[1:13] light. CBS's John Roberts has the latest
[1:16] from Arthur's Vineyard. John,
[1:18] >> good evening, Dan. Helicopters and other
[1:20] aircraft are still in the air at this
[1:22] hour looking for any clues as to what
[1:24] happened to the plane piloted by John
[1:26] Kennedy Jr. And even as afternoon wears
[1:28] on into evening, bits and pieces of
[1:30] debris are reported to be still washing
[1:32] ashore. Debris that it appears
[1:34] increasingly likely came from the
[1:36] Kennedy plane. At about midm morning,
[1:38] the search area had been concentrated in
[1:40] the Gay Head Aquina area, a uh stretch
[1:43] of beach that includes, ironically, a
[1:46] piece of property once owned by
[1:47] Jacqueline Kennedy Onasses and now in
[1:50] the family trust. The Coast Guard
[1:52] reported early this afternoon that it
[1:54] had found a piece of luggage, a piece of
[1:56] luggage that had an identification tag
[1:59] on it, that of Lauren Bet. That piece of
[2:01] luggage was found by a group of visiting
[2:04] tourists on Filin Beach.
[2:07] There was a little flap that sort of
[2:09] velcroed down on the front of the um of
[2:12] the of the suitcase and I flipped it
[2:13] open and it had a business card in there
[2:16] that says um Lauren Bet.
[2:21] As much as investigators, search and
[2:23] rescue teams want to know what happened
[2:24] to the aircraft, they want to know how
[2:27] it happened. The weather over Martha's
[2:29] Vineyard was fairly clear last night
[2:30] with a stiff breeze blowing from the
[2:32] west. Though flying in this area can be
[2:34] tricky at times. Fog and mist can move
[2:36] in and there are very few landmarks if
[2:38] you're flying over water. It's easy to
[2:41] become disoriented. Pilots who fly this
[2:43] area a lot told us this afternoon. Now,
[2:45] elements of the Coast Guard, the state
[2:47] police, the civilian air patrol, and a
[2:49] host of volunteers are still searching
[2:51] the waters and scouring the beaches
[2:53] looking for any evidence as to what
[2:55] might have happened to that aircraft.
[2:56] But with the waters fairly choppy and
[2:59] sunset about to close in, any hopes that
[3:01] anyone survived what appears to be a
[3:03] crash are fading very quickly. Dan
[3:06] >> John Roberts, thanks. From takeoff to
[3:09] last known radar sighting took roughly
[3:11] 70 minutes. Our CBS News aviation expert
[3:14] Bob has been helping us cover this story
[3:16] all day. Tonight from Washington, he
[3:18] tells us what's been found out about the
[3:20] plane and the flight.
[3:23] Kennedy, his wife, and sister-in-law
[3:25] were flying in a Piper Saratoga like
[3:27] this one, a single engine plane commonly
[3:29] used in general aviation. Kyle Bailey
[3:32] was at the Essex County, New Jersey
[3:33] airport last night when they took off.
[3:36] >> They were on the ramp talking around in
[3:38] front of their airplane and uh
[3:41] then I guess they did their pre-flight
[3:43] check and then I heard them doing
[3:44] running up the engine on the airplane.
[3:46] The plane was flying under visual flight
[3:48] rules, meaning the pilot had to be able
[3:50] to see where he was going using
[3:51] navigation aids, maps, and landmarks.
[3:54] Kennedy had not filed a flight plan, but
[3:56] that is often normal for small planes.
[3:59] After taking off at around 8:30 last
[4:01] night, FAA radar records show the single
[4:04] engine aircraft hugged the coastline
[4:06] until it reached Rhode Island and then
[4:08] turned east towards Martha's Vineyard.
[4:10] Sources say there was a high layer of
[4:11] haze, but that the weather was generally
[4:13] good. Sources tell CBS News Kennedy's
[4:16] plane was last picked up on radar at 939
[4:20] about 17 mi west of Martha's Vineyard.
[4:23] That was a location consistent with an
[4:24] imminent final approach to the Vineyard
[4:26] Haven airport. But the plane then
[4:29] disappeared from radar. No emergency
[4:31] declaration was ever heard. Early this
[4:34] morning, hours after the plane was due,
[4:36] Kennedy's family reported the plane
[4:38] missing. The search then began in
[4:40] earnest at 8:00 this morning and by
[4:42] midday had expanded to include more than
[4:44] 20 aircraft and dozens of boats. The
[4:47] Saratoga is equipped with an emergency
[4:49] locator transponder, a beacon designed
[4:51] to set off a signal in case of a crash.
[4:54] But experts say if the plane sank, the
[4:56] beacon may have malfunctioned or at
[4:58] least may be hard to hear. A special
[5:00] ocean research ship will troll
[5:02] underwater with sona. Within the past
[5:05] few minutes, I've been told that the FAA
[5:07] now officially has asked the NTSB for
[5:10] help. That is the first preliminary yet
[5:12] formal step towards declaring that an
[5:14] accident has happened. But it's very
[5:16] important to say at this point they have
[5:18] not taken the final step saying that
[5:19] there is a crash. If there is a crash
[5:21] though, investigators could have a very
[5:22] tough time. To date, there have been no
[5:24] survivors found. There was no
[5:26] declaration of emergency from the
[5:27] cockpit. And of course, this small plane
[5:29] does not have the black boxes, the
[5:31] flight data recorder and the cockpit
[5:32] voice tape. So Dan, unless they find
[5:34] some real key in the wreckage, if it has
[5:36] been a crash, it may be that we won't
[5:38] know for a long time or if ever uh
[5:40] perhaps what happened up there. Thanks,
[5:43] Bob or in Washington. After being told
[5:45] early this morning that the plane was
[5:46] missing, President Clinton called family
[5:48] members and said his prayers were with
[5:50] those on board. The Kennedys had
[5:52] gathered in Hansport for the wedding of
[5:54] John Junior's cousin. In an instant, the
[5:57] mood of joy was shattered. CBS's
[6:00] Elizabeth Kaledan is there. Elizabeth,
[6:03] >> that's right, Dana. Just about this
[6:04] hour, the Kennedy family compound behind
[6:07] me was to have been alive with the
[6:09] sounds of a wedding celebration that has
[6:11] now been postponed indefinitely.
[6:14] As caterers and florists arrived here,
[6:17] the hustle and bustle of putting on a
[6:19] wedding was stifled by an eerie silence
[6:21] from the Kennedy compound. And the big
[6:23] white tent stands empty tonight. With
[6:26] the exception of a few glimpses of Ethel
[6:28] Kennedy caught with a long lens, the
[6:30] family stayed out of sight after
[6:32] attending a morning prayer vigil, which
[6:34] a family spokesman described as full of
[6:36] hope.
[6:37] >> The prayers are for those who were not
[6:39] present.
[6:40] The prayers are hopes that uh everyone
[6:44] is safe and that the family will be
[6:46] reunited. This was to have been one of
[6:48] the last big Kennedy weddings, uniting
[6:51] Bobby and Ethel's youngest daughter,
[6:52] Rory, with a New York film and book
[6:54] editor named Mark Bailey. The wedding
[6:57] meant police presence around the
[6:58] compound was already heavy.
[7:00] >> We have been involved in planning for
[7:02] the wedding earlier in the week. So, we
[7:04] would have been here for that. It's
[7:06] unfortunate we're here for this tragedy.
[7:08] A friend of the family and former
[7:10] chairman of the Democratic National
[7:12] Committee, Steve Grossman, had lunch
[7:14] with Ethel here just last week and said
[7:16] she was filled with anticipation for
[7:18] this day.
[7:19] >> She said, "Gee, it's going to be
[7:20] wonderful. The family doesn't come
[7:22] together as much as they used to." And
[7:24] then she and Carrie had a little
[7:25] discussion about how many Kennedys and
[7:26] they'd settle on 130 of the members of
[7:29] the family. a night flight.
[7:30] >> And now, Dan, visitors to this seaside
[7:33] community who came to share a
[7:34] celebration with the nation's most
[7:36] famous family fear they'll be mourning
[7:39] with them one more time. Dan
[7:41] >> Elizabeth Kaledan in Highport. Thanks.
[7:43] For as long as we've known him, he's
[7:45] lived in a fishbowl. No matter how his
[7:47] family tried to protect him and for
[7:49] many, John will always be the prince of
[7:52] Camelot, the inheritor of the legacy,
[7:55] heir to the myth, keeper of the flame.
[7:58] Anthony Mason reports on the very public
[8:00] life of an essentially private man.
[8:04] >> When he was born, even his name made
[8:07] headlines. John F. Kennedy Jr. was just
[8:10] two months old when his father took the
[8:12] oath of office, the firstborn son of a
[8:14] sitting president, a child of Camelot,
[8:17] the golden boy of a golden couple. He
[8:20] was called John John and we came to know
[8:22] him in pictures. The most intimate
[8:25] images of a presidential family we'd
[8:27] ever seen. But the assassination
[8:29] abruptly ended Camelot. As the president
[8:32] was buried on John John's third
[8:34] birthday, a son saluted the father he
[8:37] would never come to know.
[8:40] Jacqueline Kennedy moved her children
[8:42] away from Washington. After that, out of
[8:45] the spotlight, out of harm's way. John
[8:48] Jr. was sent to private schools. At
[8:50] Brown University, he had ambitions of
[8:52] becoming an actor, but his mother
[8:54] steered him to law school. The boy was
[8:57] becoming a man. The sexiest man alive,
[9:00] People magazine called him in 1988. That
[9:03] same year, in a speech to the Democratic
[9:05] National Convention, many sensed John
[9:07] Kennedy Jr. was growing into his name.
[9:10] an unwavering commitment to the poor,
[9:15] to the elderly, to those without hope,
[9:19] regardless of fashion or convention, is
[9:22] the greatest reward of public service.
[9:25] >> His reemergence meant the press followed
[9:27] him everywhere and him about his failure
[9:30] to pass the bar.
[9:31] >> Obviously, I'm uh very disappointed,
[9:34] >> but he would spend four years working in
[9:36] the New York District Attorney's office.
[9:38] Last night at around 10:15,
[9:42] uh, my mother passed on.
[9:44] >> After his mother's death five years ago,
[9:47] JFK Jr. seemed more determined to make
[9:49] his mark.
[9:50] >> Ladies and gentlemen, meet George.
[9:52] >> He launched a political magazine called
[9:55] George and made it clear his role was
[9:57] more than ceremonial.
[9:59] >> Then he snuck away to a small island off
[10:02] the Georgia coast to marry Carolyn bet.
[10:05] The boy we came to know in pictures said
[10:07] once that he had no memory of his
[10:09] father's death, but his love of flying
[10:12] stayed with him from the very beginning.
[10:14] In the end, it may have brought down a
[10:16] president's golden child. Anthony Mason,
[10:20] CBS News, New York.
[10:23] There's more on the Kennedy story
[10:24] straight ahead on tonight's CBS Evening
[10:26] News. A portrait of Carolyn bet, the
[10:28] accomplished young woman in her own
[10:30] right who married a president's son.
[10:32] Also, the flying school where John F.
[10:34] Kennedy Jr. earned his wings and the
[10:36] shadow that forever seems to embrace
[10:39] America's most famous family
[10:49] >> problem. The doctor says my cholesterol
[10:52] is still too high.
[10:53] >> What about diet and exercise?
[10:55] >> They didn't do enough.
[10:56] >> So
[10:57] >> he suggested adding Lipur.
[10:59] >> Lipur, the number one prescribed
[11:00] medication for lowering cholesterol. In
[11:03] clinical studies, Lipur with diet was
[11:05] proven to lower bad cholesterol 39 to
[11:08] 60%. Total cholesterol 29 to 45%.
[11:12] Triglycerides 19 to 37%.
[11:14] >> He said over 4 million people have
[11:16] started taking Lipur to lower their
[11:17] cholesterol.
[11:18] >> Lipur is not for everyone including
[11:20] people with liver disease or possible
[11:21] liver problems. Women who are nursing,
[11:23] pregnant or may become pregnant.
[11:25] >> There'll be blood tests to check for
[11:26] liver problems.
[11:27] >> Tell your doctor about muscle pain or
[11:29] weakness as these may be signs of
[11:30] serious side effects. You take Lipur
[11:32] once a day.
[11:33] >> Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more
[11:34] information on Lipur and call 1888
[11:37] Lipur.
[11:39] >> Well,
[11:40] >> Lipur did it. My cholesterol is way
[11:42] down.
[11:43] >> Lipur, the lower numbers you're looking
[11:45] for.
[11:47] >> Out here, am I supposed to say, "Slow
[11:49] down. I'm constipated." I don't think
[11:52] so. So, I rely on doctor recommended
[11:54] Metamucil. works with my body gently,
[11:57] which is important to a sensitive guy
[11:59] like myself.
[12:01] >> What should you do if you're having a
[12:03] heart attack? First, call an ambulance.
[12:05] Then, take Bear aspirin. Now, Bear may
[12:08] help stop you from dying when taken
[12:10] during a heart attack. Talk to your
[12:11] doctor now. Bear, powerful pain relief
[12:15] and so much more.
[12:17] It was a Camelot romance that
[12:19] immediately captivated the nation. But
[12:21] although she married into one of the
[12:23] nation's most famous families, for many,
[12:25] Carolyn Betett Kennedy remains something
[12:27] of a mystery. CBS's Cheryl Atkinson has
[12:30] some details.
[12:32] >> The Kennedy spotlight focused intensely
[12:35] on Carolyn bet when she began her
[12:37] romance with one of the most sought
[12:38] after bachelors in the world. Once
[12:41] engaged, even their arguments became
[12:43] gristed for the media mill. This
[12:45] disagreement in Central Park captured on
[12:47] videotape by a tabloid. Gossip
[12:50] columnists predicted the wedding would
[12:52] be called off. But the wedding did
[12:54] happen, of course, in September of 1996,
[12:57] shrouded in as much privacy as the
[12:59] Kennedys could manage. Carolyn was
[13:01] young, glamorous, and elegant. Born in
[13:04] posh Greenwich, Connecticut, where today
[13:06] a vigil was held at her former school.
[13:08] She had a successful career in the
[13:10] fashion industry. Once she married into
[13:12] the Kennedy family, she was dubbed an
[13:14] instant princess and she became a
[13:17] fashion icon. her hairstyles, choice of
[13:20] clothes, even her hemlines carefully
[13:22] followed and copied.
[13:24] >> The clothes didn't wear her, she wore
[13:26] the clothes. She really had a strong
[13:30] sense of her own image.
[13:32] >> Her favorite designer was Yoshi
[13:33] Yamamato. She frequented his New York
[13:36] store often enough to give the manager a
[13:38] glimpse of the Carolyn the public didn't
[13:40] know.
[13:40] >> She had a great sense of humor. She was
[13:42] very funny. It was uh we had a lot of
[13:45] laughs working together. And I guess the
[13:48] public image of her was a that she was a
[13:50] little distant, but when you got to know
[13:52] her, she was very friendly and generous.
[13:56] She really cared about other people.
[13:57] >> Married to America's most watched
[13:59] Kennedy, Carolyn bet tried to guard her
[14:01] privacy, and John Kennedy attempted to
[14:03] protect her from the hordes of
[14:05] photographers that were never far away,
[14:07] including at their apartment in New
[14:08] York's Tribeca neighborhood. Police have
[14:11] now cordoned off Jon and Carolyn's
[14:13] apartment building, except to the
[14:14] occasional mourner. Carolyn was close to
[14:17] her sister Lauren who was also on the
[14:19] airplane. Lauren recently bought a
[14:21] penthouse in the same Tribeca
[14:23] neighborhood. Those who saw Carolyn and
[14:25] John together say they seemed close
[14:28] because she embraced him with a lot of
[14:29] dignity and she just seemed like a
[14:32] regular girl.
[14:32] >> But Jon's flying was one area of
[14:35] disagreement. When he took up lessons a
[14:37] few years ago, Caroline was said to have
[14:39] been upset, thinking the hobby too
[14:41] dangerous. Cheryl Atkinson, CBS News,
[14:44] New York. Next up on the CBS Evening
[14:47] News, where John F. Kennedy Jr. earned
[14:49] his wings.
[14:59] Look at all these laxatives. They all
[15:01] contain stimulants. That one says it may
[15:04] cause cramps. Only Phillips is stimulant
[15:06] free. Nothing's more effective.
[15:08] Nothing's safer.
[15:10] >> So I've heard.
[15:10] >> Phillips. Safe, effective relief without
[15:13] harsh stimulants. My dentures always fit
[15:15] fine. I never thought of them as a
[15:17] problem until I saw the video of my
[15:19] son's wedding. It was then that I
[15:21] decided to try Fixed Dent.
[15:23] >> Because Fixedent adjusts to the unique
[15:25] contours of your dentures and gums,
[15:27] forming a thin, powerful seal for a
[15:29] better hold than you ever thought
[15:30] possible.
[15:31] >> It was like a whole new feeling. So snug
[15:33] and secure. For once, I actually forgot
[15:35] that I even wore dentures. So now I like
[15:38] what I see.
[15:39] >> Find out for yourself what it feels like
[15:41] to fix it and forget it.
[15:44] It's time time for your heartburn to
[15:46] kick in because your heartburn relief
[15:48] gave out. It happens two or more days a
[15:51] week even though you've treated it and
[15:52] changed your diet. That frequent
[15:54] persistent heartburn may be due to acid
[15:56] reflux disease potentially serious.
[16:02] It's Pryloc time. Time to see your
[16:04] doctor about prescription Prylok. Your
[16:07] results may vary, but for many people,
[16:09] Pryloc provides 24 hours of complete
[16:12] heartburn relief with one daily dose.
[16:14] Ask your doctor for more information
[16:16] about Prylok and if it's right for you.
[16:19] The most common side effects are
[16:20] headache, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.
[16:23] 24 hours of complete heartburn relief is
[16:25] possible. It's Pryloc time.
[16:29] Want to color your gray beard or
[16:30] mustache and get a natural look? It's
[16:32] easy with just for men's gel.
[16:34] >> You look so natural. No one can tell
[16:37] with Just for Men Gel. No one can tell
[16:41] with Just for Men Gel.
[16:43] >> It's not regular hair coloring. It's
[16:44] specially made to penetrate that coarse,
[16:46] hard to color gray. Simply brush in and
[16:49] in 5 minutes rinse. Now gray is gone.
[16:52] Matched up to the rest of your hair.
[16:54] >> You look so natural.
[16:56] can tell just for
[17:00] >> we may never know absolutely for
[17:03] certain, but belief justifiably runs
[17:05] strong that John Kennedy Jr. was at the
[17:08] controls when his plane vanished. Though
[17:10] young Kennedy was not an experienced
[17:12] pilot, neither was he a novice. CBS's
[17:15] Byron Pittz reports he learned at a
[17:17] top-notch flight school and only
[17:19] recently went back to learn more.
[17:22] At the academy, where the wealthy and
[17:24] the well-known train, classmates and
[17:27] instructors say JFK Jr. had the looks
[17:30] and it logged the hours to be a skilled
[17:32] though inexperienced pilot. Licensed for
[17:34] close to 2 years, Kennedy was trained
[17:37] here at the Flight Safety Academy in
[17:38] Vero Beach, Florida. Considered one of
[17:41] the premier flight schools in the world.
[17:43] >> It's dedicated uh specifically for the
[17:46] training of professional pilots um
[17:47] specifically airline pilots. Um, upon
[17:50] occasion they do take on uh special
[17:53] cases such as uh Mr. Kennedy,
[17:55] >> a classmate of Kennedy's, Justin Allison
[17:57] says JFK Jr. would have known how to fly
[17:59] over water at night.
[18:01] >> Being right on the coast, we do fly over
[18:03] water uh as part of our training um at
[18:06] night and during the day.
[18:07] >> Experts in single engine planes say the
[18:09] model Kennedy flew was topof the line. I
[18:12] often liken that airplane to an airborne
[18:14] Chevrolet Suburban. A vehicle that does
[18:17] everything reasonably well, carries a
[18:19] good load, carries six people, is nicely
[18:21] appointed.
[18:22] >> According to his classmate, JFK Jr. was
[18:25] just at the academy last month here for
[18:27] what's called recurring training, a
[18:29] refresher course to sharpen his skills.
[18:32] Byron Pittz, CBS News, Vero Beach,
[18:35] Florida. Still ahead on the CBS Evening
[18:37] News, some of the rest of the day's news
[18:39] and then reflections on the Kennedy

[21:03] Much of the nation baked an unrelenting
[21:04] summer heat again today. Hot, steamy
[21:06] weather smothered the Northeast with
[21:08] heat index readings in the 100s in many
[21:11] areas. As CBS's Rita Braver reports now,
[21:14] the surging mercury is triggering
[21:16] concerns about the nation's power
[21:18] supply.
[21:19] >> It's already one of the hottest summers
[21:21] on record. Day after sweltering day,
[21:24] Americans have dashed to their air
[21:26] conditioners with some unpleasant
[21:28] results. Earlier this month, at the peak
[21:31] of the heat wave, hundreds of thousands
[21:33] of residents along the east coast lost
[21:36] power. The major reason demand for
[21:39] electricity is rising faster than
[21:41] supply.
[21:42] >> The uh good economy that we've had
[21:44] certainly for the last seven or eight
[21:45] years has increased uh the kinds of
[21:48] things people can buy, want to buy.
[21:49] >> That means electricity for brand new
[21:52] neighborhoods and bigger houses. The
[21:55] average new house size has increased by
[21:57] 600 square ft over the last 20 years.
[22:00] And more goodies are going into them.
[22:02] Lots of TVs, lots of computers, VCRs,
[22:06] uh, multiples per home,
[22:07] >> refrigerators with a built-in ice,
[22:09] >> larger refrigerators, uh, refrigerators
[22:11] and larger freezers, um, are certainly
[22:13] more prominent today.
[22:14] >> But new power plant construction has not
[22:17] kept up with the new consumption.
[22:19] >> I don't think any planters anywhere
[22:22] anticipated 15 years of uninterrupted
[22:24] growth.
[22:25] >> But it's not just that power companies
[22:27] fail to anticipate the economic boom.
[22:29] plants are expensive to build and often
[22:32] face local opposition.
[22:34] >> Who wants a power plant like this in
[22:35] their line of vision? Who wants
[22:38] transmission lines? Those sorts of
[22:39] things. It's a trade-off.
[22:41] >> So now Americans may be faced with a
[22:43] difficult choice. Either push for the
[22:46] building of new power plants, maybe near
[22:48] our own backyards, or cut back on some
[22:51] of the comforts and conveniences we now
[22:53] take for granted. Rita Braver, CBS News,
[22:57] Alexandria, Virginia. Relatives of the
[23:00] victims of TWWA Flight 800 gathered on
[23:02] New York's Long Island today. They held
[23:04] a memorial service and a groundbreaking
[23:06] for a monument to the 230 people lost 3
[23:10] years ago today when that plane crashed
[23:13] into the Atlantic. Investigators are
[23:15] convinced that exploding fuel vapors
[23:18] caused the crash, but so far they've not
[23:20] been able to pinpoint what ignited the
[23:22] fumes.
[23:24] Now, when the CBS Evening News returns,
[23:26] the tragic hand fate keeps dealing to
[23:28] the Kennedy family.

[25:43] The Kennedy clan is no stranger to
[25:45] tragedy. The president was assassinated
[25:48] as was his brother. And perhaps most
[25:50] ironic in light of what happened today,
[25:51] two others of his siblings died in plane
[25:54] crashes. And his brother Ted broke his
[25:57] back in a plane crash. Eric Inberg looks
[26:00] back on a fairy tale family and the
[26:02] nightmares that have plagued them.
[26:06] In a land that wanted no part of
[26:07] royalty, the Kennedys became something
[26:10] close. But their power and glamour are
[26:12] tightly bound with recurrent tragedy so
[26:15] lacerating it can make a nation cry. You
[26:17] >> know, we get up to one of those plateaus
[26:19] in which it looks like the family is
[26:22] healed and come together and uh and then
[26:26] suddenly uh it strikes again. Death
[26:28] walks out into this stage.
[26:30] >> The founding father, Joseph P. Kennedy,
[26:32] dreamed that one of his sons would be
[26:34] president. It was not the studious Jack
[26:37] he had in mind, but his oldest son, Joe.
[26:40] Then Joe was killed in World War II and
[26:42] Jack was drafted for a political career
[26:45] accompanied by his two brothers. Some
[26:47] saw a dynasty in the making. The
[26:50] Kennedys made everyone feel young until
[26:53] that November day in 1963 when many
[26:56] Americans stopped feeling young forever.
[26:59] Few who saw it ever forgot the brave
[27:02] little boy beside the casket. 5 years
[27:05] later, as Robert Kennedy campaigned for
[27:06] the presidency in California, he too was
[27:09] murdered. The remaining brother, Edward,
[27:11] probably destroyed his chance to be
[27:13] president by driving the car in which a
[27:16] young woman drowned in a place called
[27:17] Chapquitic. Believers in a Kennedy curse
[27:20] will duly note tomorrow is the 30th
[27:22] anniversary of that tumultuous event.
[27:26] The next generation of Kennedys has
[27:28] sometimes seemed to relish skating near
[27:30] the edge. A nephew, William Kennedy
[27:33] Smith, was acquitted of sexual assault,
[27:35] but only after a trial that embarrassed
[27:37] the family. Robert's son, Michael, was
[27:40] first tarnished by a sex scandal, then
[27:42] died in a skiing accident. His brother,
[27:45] Joseph, was forced to leave politics by
[27:47] a tell- all book by his ex-wife. Some
[27:50] Kennedys, like Kathleen Townsen, the
[27:52] Lieutenant Governor of Maryland, appear
[27:54] destined for future stardom. But it is
[27:57] the tragedies, each new one evoking
[28:00] memories of the last, that has made the
[28:02] Kennedy myth and makes us think back to
[28:04] the words that John Kennedy spoke while
[28:06] in the White House. Life, he said, is
[28:10] unfair.
[28:11] Eric Angberg, CBS News, Washington.
[28:15] As nightfalls on the Massachusetts
[28:17] resort island of Marthur's Vineyard, an
[28:20] ocean search continues and presses on
[28:24] for the small, very small plane carrying
[28:27] John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife Carolyn,
[28:30] and her sister Lauren Bet. The plane was
[28:33] last cited last night approaching the
[28:35] island on a flight from New Jersey. No
[28:37] bodies or survivors have been found, but
[28:39] some debris, possibly, many would say
[28:42] probably from the Kennedy plane, has
[28:45] been retrieved.
[28:47] That's part of our world tonight. We'll
[28:49] be back with the very latest
[28:50] developments in this continuing story
[28:52] later this evening on a special CBS
[28:54] broadcast.
[29:03] A small plane carrying
