[0:02] The showdown in the South, Bush and

[0:04] McCain on the eve of what could be a

[0:07] make-or-break primary. We go one-on-one

[0:10] tonight with Governor Bush. A big

[0:12] sell-off on Wall Street today. We'll

[0:14] tell you what's behind it. And thousands

[0:18] of travelers stranded as a big winter

[0:20] storm hits the Midwest.

[0:26] This is the CBS Evening News

[0:29] with Dan Rather reporting tonight from

[0:32] Charleston, South Carolina.

[0:35] Good evening. Under a Carolina moon,

[0:38] George Bush and John McCain are in the

[0:40] last 24 hours of a bitter and desperate

[0:43] battle to stay alive in the race for the

[1:17] crossover Democrats. Bush is pushing for

[1:20] the party establishment, the

[1:22] self-described religious right, and

[1:24] anti-abortion voters. Against this

[1:27] backdrop, I caught up with Governor Bush

[1:28] on the campaign trail a short while ago

[1:30] in Anderson, South Carolina.

[1:33] First of all, I've heard you repeatedly

[1:34] today say you're confident you're going

[1:35] to win. What makes you think you're

[1:37] going to win?

[1:37] Well, you know,

[1:38] somebody like me, I get out in these

[1:40] huge crowds and I can sense the

[1:42] intens
