[0:05] After a fiery collision in Los Angeles,
[0:08] the search for clues and victims. And in
[0:11] the war, Iraqi gunners shoot two US
[0:14] warplanes out of the sky.
[0:19] This is the CBS Evening News. Bob
[0:21] Schaefer reporting.
[0:23] Good evening. There are two major
[0:25] stories tonight. that freak accident at
[0:27] the Los Angeles International Airport
[0:29] and the Gulf War. Of course, Iraq fired
[0:32] more Scud missiles into Israel and Saudi
[0:34] Arabia tonight. So far though, no
[0:36] reports of damage. We're going to start
[0:38] with the Friday night collision of the
[0:40] jet liner and a commuter plane. Richard
[0:42] Roth in Los Angeles has today's
[0:44] developments. At daylight, with rescue
[0:47] efforts over, work resumed on two tasks
[0:49] still facing authorities at Los Angeles
[0:52] airport. Counting the dead and finding
[0:54] the cause. Sky West Airlines confirmed
[0:57] today all 12 passengers and crew aboard
[0:59] its commuter plane were killed in the
[1:01] collision with the US Air Jet, raising
[1:03] the known death toll to at least 18.
[1:06] Accident investigators said they could
[1:08] barely make out the remnants of the
[1:10] small plane beneath the wreckage of the
[1:12] jet liner. I'm not sure whether that
[1:14] complicates or simplifies the task there
[1:16] because of uh you can get to a stage of
[1:20] of damage that it interferes with your
[1:22] ability to document.
[1:24] >> Instrument data and voice recorders from
[1:26] the jet were recovered and sent to
[1:28] Washington for analysis. Observations at
[1:30] the crash scene and taped control tower
[1:32] conversations will be early clues to
[1:35] determining why the accident occurred,
[1:37] but survivors have already told what
[1:39] happened
