[0:07] From ABC in New York, this is World News
[0:10] Tonight, Sunday with Sam Donaldson.
[0:14] Good evening. On this 64th day of
[0:16] captivity for the American hostages in
[0:17] Tehran, UN Secretary General Kurt
[0:19] Baldheim flew to Washington to report to
[0:21] President Carter. At the UN, the
[0:23] security council continued work on a
[0:26] resolution to denounce the Soviet Union
[0:27] for its invasion of Afghanistan. In
[0:30] Moscow, the Soviet news agency TAS
[0:32] continued the official Russian
[0:33] denunciation of President Carter, saying
[0:36] if the White House is trying to
[0:37] influence Soviet foreign policy, it is a
[0:39] hopeless undertaking. Such attempts will
[0:41] flop. And in Afghanistan, there are
[0:44] reports of heavy fighting and heavy
[0:45] casualties on the part of the Muslim
[0:47] rebels resisting the Soviet invasion. We
[0:50] have reports on these stories beginning
[0:51] with Greg Dobs in the Afghan capital of
[0:53] Kabell.
[0:55] >> The Russians seem to be digging in here.
[0:58] Trenches for infantrymen, excavations
[1:00] for tanks and artillery just on the
[1:02] outskirts of Kabell. This particular
[1:04] encampment is on the road toward the
[1:06] Kyber Pass, Pakistan. But as reports
[1:09] have it, similar semi-permanentlooking
[1:11] camps are being set up in several parts
[1:13] of the country. Interestingly, here the
[1:16] weapons point not only toward the
[1:18] borders but also toward the capital.
[1:20] Western diplomatic observers in Kabell
[1:23] say it looks like the Russians are here
[1:25] for the long term.
[1:27] At the US embassy yesterday, the hundred
[1:30] or so Americans who live here were
[1:31] called in and asked to leave if their
[1:33] work is not essential. Why? Not because
