[0:02] A winter storm warning. Freezing rain is
[0:04] in the forecast. How the metro area is
[0:06] getting ready. What you need to do to
[0:08] your home now to save you money on your
[0:11] next heating bill. A break in a triple
[0:13] murder case. Who police arrested for
[0:15] killing a Bethany woman and her two
[0:17] sons. Plus, saving money on car
[0:20] insurance. How easy is it and is it
[0:22] worth it?
[0:26] >> From KGW, where the news comes first.
[0:29] This is Northwest News Channel 8 at 5.
[0:37] >> Getting ready for freezing rain. The
[0:38] deicers on hand. Try is chaining up and
[0:41] folks are bundling up preparing for
[0:43] dangerous conditions. Will the commute
[0:45] be an icy mess? That's the question
[0:48] tonight. Good evening. I'm Tracy Barry
[0:50] >> and I'm Joe Donlin. We have News Channel
[0:51] 8 team coverage from how crews are
[0:53] getting ready to how you can prepare.
[0:54] But we begin with News Channel 8's Matt
[0:56] Safhino who's tracking that rain that
[0:58] could cause some problems. Matt?
[0:59] >> Yeah, Joe. This is one of those
[1:00] situations where only a little bit of
[1:02] freezing rain. If only a little bit
[1:04] falls, it can cause some pretty big
[1:06] problems. I don't think this is going to
[1:07] be a storm that just coats the entire
[1:08] city with ice. But again, it only takes
[1:10] a little bit to cause some problems. Let
[1:12] me show you the temperatures right now
[1:13] and explain why this is sort of a
[1:15] borderline situation. It's 31 in
[1:17] Troutdale and it's 28 in Cascade Locks,
[1:19] but those are the only places below
[1:20] freezing at this hour. As you can see
[1:22] now, temperatures will fall a little bit
[1:24] overnight and there's more cold air that
[1:26] can come out of the gorge. You can see
[1:28] it's only 22 in Pendleton and all of
[1:29] that is flowing through the gorge. So,
[1:31] we've got a good source of cold air and
[1:33] as this storm approaches, the east wind
[1:35] is going to pick up and get a little bit
[1:37] stronger. So, it's really going to be
[1:38] the places that are under the influence
[1:40] of that cold air coming out of the
[1:42] gorge. What happens is you have a very
[1:44] shallow layer of cold air. Warmer air
[1:46] comes in over the top of that and that
[1:48] produces rain which then freezes on
[1:50] contact. So, here's the bottom line for
[1:52] you. I think we'll see ice in the
[1:54] morning, freezing rain, areas of free,
[1:55] freezing rain starting around 10. It'll
[1:58] be iciest in East County and the gorge
[1:59] of course goes without saying. South
[2:01] metro area could easily be just all
[2:03] rain. In fact, our winter storm warning
[2:05] not in effect for areas like Salem and
[2:08] Corvalis, but there will be areas of
[2:10] freezing rain. It only takes a little
[2:11] bit to cause some pretty big problems.
[2:13] Tracy.
[2:13] >> All right, thank you, Matt. Freezing
[2:15] rain spells real danger for commuters.
[2:17] So, Washington's uh ODOD and Trimead are
[2:21] trying to stay ahead of the storm to
[2:23] keep you safe. News Channel 8's Key
[2:25] Chalmers is live in Skype to continue
[2:27] our live team coverage of the storm.
[2:29] Key, that's right, Tracy. Road crews
[2:31] definitely gearing up for a busy night.
[2:33] Take a look below us. That is a yard for
[2:36] Washington Department of Transportation.
[2:38] You can see some trucks down there. Uh
[2:41] some deicer sand trucks getting ready to
[2:44] hit the streets. Now, Washd tells us
[2:46] that they will have six deicers and
[2:48] three anti-icers out overnight. Starting
[2:51] at about 8:00 tonight, they will be
[2:52] monitoring the roads. Uh they'll be
[2:54] focusing initially their efforts on
[2:56] Interstate 5 and I 205 and the highways
[2:58] through the gorge. Now, in the Portland
[3:01] area, TRAT is also preparing for the
[3:04] possibility of freezing rain on the east
[3:06] side. The Max will be running every 10
[3:08] minutes throughout the night to keep ice
[3:10] from building
