[0:00] good morning bible baptist church it's
[0:03] time for the word of encouragement
[0:05] on this wonderful wet wednesday as it's
[0:08] been raining today
[0:10] but it is so exciting to hear from you
[0:12] today
[0:13] for our word of encouragement we're
[0:15] continuing in our series in philemon
[0:18] and so this morning will be in verses 8
[0:20] through 13.
[0:22] philemon 8-13 the bible says wherefore
[0:24] though
[0:25] i might be much bold in christ to enjoin
[0:28] thee
[0:29] that which is convenient yet for love's
[0:32] sake i'd rather beseech thee
[0:34] being such and one is paul the aged and
[0:36] now also a prisoner of jesus christ
[0:39] i beseech thee for my son onesimus
[0:42] whom i have begotten in my bonds which
[0:45] in time passed was to the unprofitable
[0:48] but now profitable to thee and to me
[0:51] whom i have sent again thou therefore
[0:53] receive him
[0:54] that is in my known bowels whom i should
[0:57] have retained with me that in thy stead
[1:00] he might have ministered unto me in the
[1:02] bonds of the gospel
[1:03] the apostle paul in talking to philemon
[1:06] has
[1:07] in these first seven verses expressed
[1:09] his
[1:10] greeting and express his love and his
[1:13] excitement for philemon's
[1:15] uh heart for the lord and his faith in
[1:18] the lord
[1:19] but here he he's beginning to get to the
[1:22] the matter at hand
[1:23] and the matter at hand this morning is
[1:26] dealing with
[1:27] onesimus onesimus being paul's son
[1:31] in the faith and it's paul's desire
[1:35] that onesimus would be received
[1:38] back to philemon and so we find here in
[1:41] our text this morning as we read it
[1:43] together that philemon is being
[1:46] requested by the apostle paul paul says
[1:48] wherefore though
[1:49] i might be much bold in christ to enjoin
[1:51] thee that which is convenient
[1:54] yet for love's sake i'd rather beseech
[1:56] thee so because of love i'm
[1:58] asking you philemon being such a one as
[2:00] paul the aged a
[2:02] prisoner of jesus christ he's asking him
[2:04] about onesimus
[2:05] and he says i've begotten him in my
[2:06] bonds in other words paul had the
[2:08] opportunity
[2:09] to lead onesimus to the lord and while
[2:12] he was in prison and so somehow
[2:14] paul had that opportunity and so
[2:17] onesimus has
[2:18] received the lord and now paul is saying
[2:21] now i know that onesimus and time's fast
[2:23] to thee was unprofitable
[2:25] but now it's profitable to be the end of
[2:28] me whom i've said again that thou
[2:29] therefore receive him
[2:31] that is of my own vows that whom i would
[2:33] have retained with me
[2:34] that in thy stead he might have
[2:36] ministered unto me in the bonds of the
[2:38] gospel
[2:39] onesimus was ministering to the apostle
[2:42] paul nessimus was being
[2:44] used of god to be a blessing to the
[2:47] apostle paul
[2:48] even though he'd come from a situation
[2:50] that was not good he'd been a slave
[2:53] to philemon and he had left his master
[2:56] he had run away he had put himself in a
[3:00] position
[3:00] of disobedience uh and
[3:04] paul had begotten to him in other words
[3:06] paul led him to christ and now
[3:08] onesimus paul sends him back
[3:11] how nervous onesimus must have been and
[3:14] we'll talk a little bit
[3:14] more about that tomorrow but the
[3:17] interesting thing here is this
[3:18] in verse 13 paul said that
[3:21] i would have retained with me that in
[3:23] thy stead he might have ministered unto
[3:25] me in the bonds of the gospel
[3:27] onesimus was ministering to paul even
[3:30] though he's a new christian
[3:32] even though he'd come from a terrible
[3:34] background even though his life
[3:36] situation was
[3:37] not at the best time in his life
[3:40] he still was being used by god because
[3:43] anybody
[3:44] who's willing to let god have their way
[3:47] his way in their life
[3:49] can be used by god in a great way
[3:52] so i'd like to challenge you this
[3:54] morning be available
[3:57] for god to use you now you may say well
[3:59] preacher you don't understand the
[4:01] background that i come from yes i
[4:04] may not understand that but god does and
[4:07] god
[4:07] brings you to the place of being
[4:10] available to him so that he might
[4:11] use you to be an encouragement to others
[4:14] to minister to other people
[4:17] every situation that you and i have been
[4:20] through
[4:20] has been brought upon us so that god
[4:23] could use us now
[4:25] some of the situations in our life are
[4:27] not god
[4:28] derived but are sin derived or are flesh
[4:31] derived
[4:32] decisions that we made there are people
[4:34] who have made fleshly decisions and
[4:36] suffered consequences
[4:38] but repented and got right and god is
[4:40] using them today
[4:42] because of the decision they made to get
[4:45] right with god
[4:46] yes the difficulty they went through yes
[4:48] the situations of life were terrible
[4:51] were awful but god showed himself
[4:54] mighty and showed himself strong and was
[4:57] able to use those individuals for the
[5:00] glory of god
[5:01] so today number one be available
[5:04] be available for god to use secondly
[5:07] not only be available but be repentant
[5:11] oh how we don't like that word
[5:13] repentance but it is a needful part in
[5:16] the christian life
[5:17] when there's wrong in our life when
[5:19] there's sin in our life we
[5:20] need to repent and get right so be
[5:23] available
[5:24] and be repented also stop and consider
[5:27] today what god would have you and i
[5:29] to do and the desire of his life
[5:33] for us and his thoughts for us
[5:36] because his way truly is best and i love
[5:39] looking in the life of philemon here and
[5:41] how he handles this situation
[5:43] with onesimus and paul's boldness
[5:47] but yet paul's love paul encourages him
[5:51] paul talks about his relationship with
[5:54] the lord
[5:54] and when you're right with god you'll be
[5:58] right with people
[5:59] but when you're not right with god
[6:01] you'll struggle in your relationship
[6:03] with people
[6:04] so today let me challenge you be
[6:06] available
[6:08] be repentant and lastly be right
[6:11] be right with god today the songwriter
[6:14] wrote the song
[6:15] and asked the question is thy heart
[6:18] right with god
[6:19] washed in the crimson flood cleansed and
[6:22] made holy
[6:23] humble and lowly right in the side of
[6:26] god
[6:28] countess thou all things for jesus but
[6:30] loss
[6:31] is thy heart right with god it's a good
[6:34] question
[6:36] so let me ask you this morning is your
[6:39] heart right
[6:40] also today be in the word
[6:44] you need the word of encouragement today
[6:46] now philemon's
[6:48] word of encouragement may not be the
[6:49] same for you it may not even thrill your
[6:51] heart
[6:52] but yet be in god's word today
[6:56] and if you're going to receive people
[6:58] who have done you wrong
[7:00] the only way you can do that is when
[7:02] your relationship with god is right now
[7:05] if you don't want to get right with
[7:07] people
[7:09] then you are not right with god
[7:14] so if you're if you have situations with
[7:16] people in your life that you're holding
[7:17] grudges
[7:18] bitterness anger and animosity toward
[7:20] god's not pleased
[7:22] you need to get it right with god and
[7:25] then secondly with people
[7:27] so i'm glad you came today to the word
[7:30] of encouragement
[7:31] but remind ourselves that philemon helps
[7:34] us to understand
[7:35] that god wants us to be available to be
[7:38] repentant
[7:39] and to be right see you next time for
[7:42] the word of encouragement but hopefully
[7:44] i'll see you tonight
