[0:01] Texas where Hurricane Rita came ashore
[0:03] at about 3:30 this morning.
[0:06] >> As we said, it is pounding the Gulf
[0:07] Coast, made landfall at 3:30 this
[0:09] morning, Eastern time, just east of
[0:11] Sabine Pass, Texas. And while it seems
[0:13] that the cities of Houston and
[0:15] Galveastston were spared the worst, this
[0:17] is still a powerful and dangerous storm
[0:19] and extensive damage and flooding is
[0:21] expected.
[0:21] >> Harry Smith is in New Orleans this
[0:23] morning, which is suffering once again.
[0:24] Harry, what's the latest there?
[0:27] Yeah. Well, you know, we had the levies
[0:29] that were uh you know, breached so badly
[0:31] during Katrina, which is almost four
[0:32] weeks ago already were topped yesterday
[0:35] and waters pouring into the lower 9inth
[0:37] ward. We'll have more on that in just a
[0:39] bit.
[0:40] >> Thank you, Harry.
[0:42] >> All right, thanks Harry. First, let's
[0:43] get right to the headlines on Hurricane
[0:45] Rita. As we said, Rita is now a category
[0:47] 2 storm with top winds of 100 mph and a
[0:51] 20foot storm surge, which is expected to
[0:54] cause extensive flooding. Nearly three
[0:56] quarter of a million homes and
[0:58] businesses in Texas have lost
[0:59] electricity.
[1:01] It may have weakened from a category 5
[1:03] hurricane earlier this week, but Rita is
[1:06] still an extremely dangerous storm that
[1:08] poses a real threat to low-lying areas
[1:10] along the coast. CBS News correspondent
[1:12] John Roberts is in Bumont, Texas, east
[1:14] of Houston with more. Good morning
[1:16] again, John.
[1:18] >> Hey, good morning to you, Tracer. We
[1:20] just got a little bit of good news and
[1:21] that is that the back side of the
[1:23] eyewall has collapsed. So instead of
