[0:00] [music] This is a nightline Friday night

[0:03] special.

[0:05] Better feel.

[0:06] >> It was [music] a stunning revelation.

[0:08] Are you aware of the installation of any

[0:10] listening devices in the oval office of

[0:12] the president?

[0:15] [music]

[0:17] I was aware of listening devices.

[0:21] Yes, sir.

[0:22] >> The best oravoir. More than a quarter

[0:25] century later, the tapes [music] that

[0:26] helped bring down a president can be

[0:28] broadcast for the first time. There's

[0:31] revenge.

[0:35] >> We are about to die because he's a bad

[0:56] listening in on the White House cover.

[1:01] [music]

[1:24] alive in America today either weren't

[1:26] born yet or were just too young to have

[1:28] any awareness of what was going on. So

[1:31] let's begin tonight with a thumbnail

[1:33] refresher course. June 1972,

[1:36] the Watergate building here in

[1:38] Washington, hotel, apartments, and some

[1:41] offices. Among those the offices of the

[1:44] Democratic National Committee. Several

[1:46] men are arrested after breaking into

[1:48] that office and they turn out to have

[1:50] ties to both the CIA and the committee

[1:53] to reelect the president, Richard Nixon.

[1:56] The White House press secretary

[1:58] dismisses the whole
