[3:03] >> BIG BROTHER 5 premier CBS Tuesday, July
[3:05] 6th.
[3:09] >> This is CBS4 News. Now,
[3:12] >> good afternoon. I'm meteorologist Craig
[3:13] Setter in CBS4 Weather Control. A live
[3:15] look outside now into Broward and skies
[3:17] beginning to darken ahead of a severe
[3:19] thunderstorm that continues to work its
[3:20] way slowly south in western sections of
[3:23] the Broward metro area. Here it is on
[3:25] real time radar. You can see the
[3:27] heaviest activity running from Weston
[3:29] down to Silver Lakes and Southwest
[3:31] Ranches. It's now entering extreme
[3:32] northwest metro areas of Miami Dade
[3:35] County. Zooming in on this thunderstorm.
[3:37] It is a very slow mover. That means that
[3:39] very heavy rain and local street
[3:41] flooding is likely through much of these
[3:43] areas. Western Pinrook Pines, western
[3:45] Myiramar, especially from I75 areas west
[3:48] to US 27 there. As you can see, intense
[3:51] thunderstorm activity, small P-size hail
[3:54] has been reported as well as frequent
[3:56] lightning. Now, let's go to Maggie in
[3:58] the newsroom with the latest on the
[3:59] news.
[3:59] >> Thank you, Craig. Former President
[4:01] Ronald Reagan's flag draped coffin has
[4:03] now reached his presidential library in
[4:05] Seami Seami Valley, California. It is
[4:07] only the beginning of a week of funeral
[4:09] tributes. We'll tell you what else is
[4:11] ahead coming up at 5:00. This news
[4:14] breakak has been sponsored by El Dorado,
[4:16] a different kind of furniture store.
[4:21] >> That looks hard.
[4:22] >> It really isn't.
[4:23] >> If you hated math,
[4:25] >> I used to,
[4:26] >> but now you like it.
[4:28] >> Well, yeah, now that I understand it.
[4:31] >> This moment brought to you by Silven
[4:33] Learning Center. We begin by identifying
[4:35] your child's specific needs, followed by
[4:37] individual attention, personalized
[4:39] lesson plans, and progress report. This
[4:41] is a CBS News special report.
[4:45] Ronald Reagan, the death of a president
[4:49] from New York. Here is Dan Rather.
[4:53] Good day again. America now begins
[4:55] saying goodbye to the 40th president of
[4:57] the United States, Ronald Reagan. At
[5:00] this hour, the president's flag draped
[5:02] coffin is going on public view for the
[5:04] first time at the Reagan Presidential
[5:06] Library in Semi Valley, California.
[5:09] Mourers will file past the casket,
[5:11] paying their last respects until early
[5:14] evening tomorrow. That will be here in
[5:16] Semi Valley, California. The scene that
[5:19] you now see live.
[5:22] There'll be later ceremonies in
[5:25] Washington and then back in California
[5:27] for burial on Friday night. A short time
[5:31] ago, the Reagan family, led by former
[5:33] first lady Nancy Reagan, held a simple
[5:35] moving service for the former president.
[5:37] In a poignant moment, the former first
[5:39] lady knelt by her husband's coffin and
[5:42] gave what seemed a mournful goodbye. She
[5:45] placed her head upon the coffin.
[5:49] Again, President Reagan will lie in
[5:50] state at the library round the clock
[5:53] through tomorrow. After a state funeral
[5:56] in Washington, the president will be
[5:58] buried Friday at sunset on the library
[6:01] grounds overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
[6:04] CBS News correspondent Jerry Bowen is at
[6:07] the library in Semi Valley, California.
[6:09] Jerry,
[6:11] >> Dan, good day again from the Reagan
[6:13] Library here in Semi Valley. They are
[6:15] changing the honor guard as they will
[6:17] every half hour by President Reagan's
[6:20] casket. And the public has begun to
[6:22] arrive on the buses. Buses that will
[6:23] carry them through the night to pay
[6:25] their last respects. 2,000 visitors
[6:28] every hour. America's period of national
[6:31] morning has begun.
[6:34] After a weekend of mourning in private,
[6:36] Nancy Reagan and her family emerged to
[6:38] accompany the body of the former
[6:39] president on one last ride. From the
[6:42] mortuary in Santa Monica to his final
[6:44] resting place at the Ronald Reagan
[6:46] Presidential Library in Seami Valley,
[6:48] crowds of sympathizers showed up as well
[6:50] as the beginnings of the intense
[6:52] security that will surround the events
[6:54] of this week. They greeted Mrs. Reagan
[6:56] with cheers and applause as she and
[6:59] daughter Patty Davis, son Ron, Reagan's
[7:02] adopted son, Michael, and son-in-law
[7:04] Dennis Rell took in the impromptu
[7:06] memorial that had sprouted up in the
[7:08] mortuary's lawn over the weekend.
[7:10] Remembrances left by Californians who'd
[7:12] grown up with Ronald Reagan during his
[7:14] days as a movie star here, as
[7:16] California's governor for two terms,
[7:18] then as president.
[7:20] >> He appealed to all the people. He was
[7:22] president of all the people and he'll be
[7:24] missed by everybody.
[7:39] Mr. Reagan's body was placed inside the
[7:41] hearse as an honor guard stood by. Then
[7:43] the motorcade wound its way up the
[7:45] freeway, passing by other tributes,
[7:48] leaving the city he had started his
[7:50] movie career in had lived in since
[7:52] leaving the presidency 15 years ago. A
[7:55] 45mile trip traveling up another freeway
[7:58] named after him to the place on the hill
[8:01] in Seami Valley he selected as his
[8:03] library and his final resting place.
[8:06] More mourers waited for him there. I got
[8:09] up early and picked flowers from my
[8:11] garden to honor President and Mrs.
[8:14] Reagan because they have been beacons of
[8:17] light and hope to the world and I just
[8:20] love them.
[8:27] The family said that Mr. Reagan had
[8:28] always wanted the people of California
[8:30] to have a part in his funeral as much as
[8:32] national and world leaders. His body
[8:34] will lie in repose here for 30 hours as
[8:37] the public will come to pay respects
[8:39] around the clock. First though, a
[8:42] private ceremony after Mr. Reagan's
[8:44] casket arrived.
[8:45] >> We thank you that this world is a better
[8:47] place because he was here. And we thank
[8:51] you for the pride that he instilled for
[8:55] reminding us of the great nation that
[8:57] under your guidance we are.
[9:00] >> It's a steady stream of buses coming up
[9:02] the hill now. All of them full. All of
[9:04] them full. Many people want to say
[9:06] goodbye. Dan
[9:09] >> Jerry Bowen reporting live from Semi
[9:11] Valley, California, where the public is
[9:12] just now being um allowed to go inside.
[9:16] They have none of the public has yet uh
[9:19] been allowed to pass by the casket
[9:22] itself. There people gathered outside
[9:26] and they're at the doors of the library
[9:29] and they'll begin piling through. You
[9:32] see some of them the early arrivals. Now
[9:40] we underscore once again that this
[9:42] viewing by the public will be on a
[9:44] 24-hour day and night basis
[9:48] through today, tonight and tomorrow.
[9:52] Then the president's body will be taken
[9:54] to Washington DC.
[9:57] It will be in the ratunda of the capitol
[10:03] on Wednesday
[10:06] and Thursday
[10:08] there'll be a service at the national
[10:10] cathedral
[10:12] and then after that on Friday the
[10:14] president's body will be brought back to
[10:16] his library where you're now seeing this
[10:18] live picture of the public beginning to
[10:20] file through and the president will be
[10:22] buried there at his library in Semi
[10:24] Valley, California
[10:26] as you You can see the public viewing of
[10:28] President Reagan's coffin
[10:31] has begun at the Reagan Presidential
[10:33] Library in California. The governor of
[10:36] California is expected sometime over the
[10:38] next 45 minutes or an hour. The viewing
[10:40] will continue round the clock through
[10:42] tomorrow.
[10:47] CBS News will be back on the air at
[10:50] various times, which may seem
[10:52] appropriate.
[10:54] And of course, there'll be full coverage
[10:55] on tonight's CBS Evening News as well as
[10:57] the local news on this CBS station. For
[11:00] now, Dan Rather with Jerry Bowen. We'll
[11:04] see you a little later.
[11:17] >> We've tried to put him in his his room,
[11:19] but then we watched your show and you
[11:20] said you're putting him someplace that
[11:22] he really likes. He's got his books.
[11:23] She's got everything there,
[11:24] >> of course.
[11:25] >> And so he's happy,
[11:26] >> of course.
[11:26] >> So, we didn't do that. And
[11:28] >> so, where can we put them?
