[0:00] Six. See you then.
[0:04] >> On World News Tonight this Wednesday,
[0:06] that ship split in half on the Oregon
[0:08] coast. First they tried to burn it. Now
[0:10] they want to sink it. They better get it
[0:12] right. Kurdish demonstrators die in
[0:15] Europe today as they do what they can in
[0:17] support of this man. When rich
[0:20] adventurers get into trouble, should it
[0:21] be the taxpayer who comes to the rescue?
[0:24] Maybe there's another way. And how about
[0:26] weather as a weapon? It's a little far
[0:29] out, but the Pentagon is watching and
[0:31] we'll take a closer look.
[0:40] From ABC News World Headquarters in New
[0:43] York, this is World News Tonight with
[0:46] Peter Jennings.
[0:47] >> Good evening. We begin tonight on the
[0:48] coast of Oregon where a grounded ship
[0:50] carrying heavy crude oil has proved to

[0:54] challenge. And unless the authorities
[0:56] get it right, this time an ecological
[0:58] disaster is still a possibility. The new
[1:02] Carissa got into the news a couple of
[1:03] weeks ago when she slipped her anchor
[1:04] and was pushed onshore by high winds and
[1:07] the surf. It's not been possible to pump
[1:09] the oil off and it has been leaking all
[1:12] the time. The plan to burn it off didn't
[1:14] work. So today, another plan. Here's
[1:17] ABC's Judy Mueller.
[1:20] It seemed like a good plan at the time,
[1:22] but with rupt weather threatening to
[1:23] break up the new Carissa and spill
[1:25] 400,000 gallons of oil, the Coast Guard
[1:28] set the ship on fire. They hoped that
[1:30] most of the heavy oil would burn off.
[1:32] They were wrong. I
[1:32] >> mean, the buck stops here and and you
[1:35] can always go back and say should have,
[1:36] co
