[0:31] Good evening, Dan Rather reporting. The
[0:34] news today came as a shock. Tennis Hall
[0:36] of Famer Arthur Ash revealed that he has
[0:39] AIDS. It was something Arthur Ash wanted
[0:41] to keep private, but he says he was
[0:43] finally forced to go public. CBS News
[0:46] health correspondent Edie Magnus reports
[0:47] on Arthur Ash and AIDS.
[0:52] Arthur Ash was the first black man to
[0:54] win one of tennis's grand slam
[0:56] tournaments, defeating Jimmy Connors at
[0:58] Wimbledon in 1975.
[1:00] He ranked among America's top 10 tennis
[1:02] players for 15 years until he suffered a
[1:05] heart attack in 1979, which forced him
[1:08] suddenly to retire. "Why me?" Ash asked
[1:11] then. He could be asking that question
[1:13] now. I have known since the time of my
[1:16] brain operation in September 1988
[1:19] that I have AIDS.
[1:21] >> Test showed Ash had a brain infection
[1:23] and more tests confirmed the cause was
[1:25] AIDS. Acquired, he says, from a blood
[1:28] transfusion during one of two bypass
[1:30] operations on his heart.
[1:32] >> I am not sick
[1:34] and I can function very well in all that
[1:37] I have been involved in for the past
[1:39] several years.
[1:42] As for my family,
[1:44] my wife and daughter are in excellent
[1:47] health and both are HIV negative.
