[0:00] and Brown and tax cut. Tonight, what the

[0:03] Bush plan might mean for you. The leader

[0:06] of the Texas 7 says he deserves to die

[0:10] for murdering a police officer. And the

[0:12] stadium name. The stakes are a mile

[0:21] high. This is the CBS Evening News with

[0:25] Dan Rather reporting from CBS News

[0:28] headquarters in New York.

[0:30] Good evening. A concerned but no panic

[0:32] assessment of the US economy today from

[0:34] the chairman of the Federal Reserve.

[0:36] Alan Greenspan said the once booming

[0:39] economy now has slowed to the point that

[1:13] Hearing will please come to order and

[1:15] Alan Greenspan admitted the engine has

[1:17] suddenly stalled. We have had a very

[1:20] dramatic slowing down and indeed uh we

[1:24] are probably uh very close to zero at

[1:28] this particular moment. Translation,

[1:30] we're flirting with recession. Then the

[1:32] Fed chairman did a surprising turnaround

[1:34] on tax cuts. Budget surpluses are

[1:37] growing so fast. He said we can both

[1:39] eliminate the federal deficit and trim

[1:42] taxes. It is far better in my judgment

[1:45] that the surpluses be lowered by tax

[1:47] reductions than by spending increases.
