[0:12] Get your gun.

[0:25] During the first two months of 1991, the

[0:27] United States and 27 other members of

[0:29] the United Nations were at war with

[0:31] Iraq. During this short period of time,

[0:34] this coalition carried out one of the

[0:36] most violent and successful assaults

[0:38] ever made on a major enemy force. To

[0:41] wage this war, they used almost every

[0:43] military means at their disposal.

[1:17] I'm and rather. This is the story of how

[1:20] the United States suddenly found itself

[1:22] halfway around the world in a war not so

[1:25] much against a nation as against a

[1:27] single person. A man who bragged that if

[1:29] he was challenged, American soldiers

[1:32] would drown in their own blood in the

[1:35] mother of all battles. The enemy was

[1:37] Saddam Hussein, the unelected president

[1:40] of Iraq. Saddam had risen to power using

[1:43] murder and terror to destroy his

[1:45] opposition and to control his people. He

[1:47] had squandered his country's oil wealth

[1:49] on a war with neighboring Iran. A

[1:51] horrible 8-year conflict in which a

[1:53] million people died for a cause that was

[1:56] never very clear. For the United States,

[1:59] the Iran Iraq conflict was a war between

[2:01] two countries for whom we had little

[2:03] love. But we supported Saddam because he

[2:06] was keeping Iran in check. We could also

[2:09] imagine he was the avenger for Iran's

[2:11] heartless treatment of American

[2:12] hostages.

[2:14] When Saddam's war with Iran was finally

[2:16] ended, there was no winner. Iraq had

[2:19] gained nothing but enormous casualties

[2:21] and financial chaos. Nevertheless,

[2:24] Saddam Hussein's unrestrained desire to

[2:26] be the ruler of the region remained. So

[2:29] too
