[0:05] Tonight on Night Line, fool's gold.

[0:08] Stocks may be down, but gold is up, way

[0:10] up, and people are now cashing in their

[0:12] family bullion at record rates. But does

[0:15] this cash for gold site provide the most

[0:17] bang for your buck? We have the answers.

[0:20] Plus, down and dirty maggot farmer,

[0:23] sewer inspector, charcoal maker. Mike

[0:26] Row has done some of the griiest jobs in

[0:28] America. We have unique access to the

[0:31] dirtiest man in show business. And

[0:34] charged Chris Brown in court tonight

[0:36] facing two felony charges after what a

[0:39] police detective calls a brutal argument

[0:41] between the singer and his girlfriend.

[0:43] We have the shocking new details of

[0:45] what's alleged to have happened that

[0:47] night.

[0:49] >> From the global resources of ABC News

[0:52] with Terry Moran, Martin Basher, and

[0:54] Cynthia Mcbaden in New York City. This

[0:57] is Night Line, March 5th, 2009.

[1:02] >> Good evening. It's been another bad day

[1:04] for stocks with the Dow closing at

[1:06] 6,594.

[1:08] That's its lowest for 12 years. But it's

[1:11] been another good day for gold with the

[1:14] precious metal closing at over $930

[1:17] an ounce. It's hardly surprising then

[1:19] that during these tough economic times,

[1:21] many people attempted to sell their

[1:23] jewelry in order to raise some

[1:25] muchneeded cash. And one company, Cash

[1:28] for Gold, seems to have cornered this

[1:30] growing market. But as Vicky Mabberry

[1:33] now reports, all that glistens may not

[1:36] be gold.

[1:37] >> Here's money. With gold at an all-time

[1:40] high, now's the time to send your

[1:43] unwanted gold for cash.

[1:45] >> If you watch the Super Bowl for the ads,

[1:48] this one may have caught your eye.

[1:50] >> I can get cash for this gold medallion

[1:52] of me wearing a gold medallion.

[1:53] >> Gold microphone. A highcost, low-budget

[1:56] ad featuring two perpetually broke

[1:58] celebrities cashing in on their goddy

[2:01] gold junk.

[2:03] >> Goodbye, old friend.

[2:05] >> But that ad equals big business. I mean,

[2:08] serious business for Jeff Aronson and

[2:11] Howie Moffin, CEO and president of gold

[2:14] buying giant Cash for Gold.

[2:17] >> The day after the Super Bowl, what did

[2:18] the mail look like?

[2:19] >> Boom.

[2:21] Touted as one of the fastest growing

[2:23] companies in the country, Cash for Gold

[2:25] is a simple idea. Consumers mail in

[2:28] their old gold jewelry in exchange for

[2:30] money. This is their headquarters in

[2:33] Fort Lauderdale.

[2:35] And this is their daily delivery of

[2:38] incoming gold. This is just one day's

[2:40] call.

[2:40] >> One day's call. Fortunately for them,

[2:43] these 30-something entrepreneurs from

[2:45] Long Island and Brooklyn have found

[2:47] themselves ahead of the curve on a bad

[2:49] economy.

[2:50] >> We're over 700,000 transactions.

[2:52] >> What do you think has been the thing

[2:55] that's propelled you farthest fastest?

[2:58] Has it been your advertising? Has it

[3:00] been the price of gold going up? Or do

[3:03] you think it's been the bad economy?

[3:06] >> I think that's an excellent question.

[3:08] Um, I think a little of of each.

[3:10] >> Here, over 300 employees work under the

[3:13] hawk-like gaze of guards who patrol the

[3:16] sorting floor and warn them when they

[3:18] enter and exit. Cash for Gold is the

[3:21] largest buyer of secondhand gold. Here's

[3:24] how it works. You send them your old

[3:26] gold. They analyze it, weigh it, and cut

[3:28] you a check. You like the amount, you

[3:31] cash the check. If you don't like it,

[3:33] call within 12 days and get your jewelry

[3:35] back.

[3:36] >> Then call cash go. You have a nice day,

[3:38] sir.

[3:38] >> It's secure. It's safe. And it's

[3:40] confidential.

[3:41] >> To clarify, cash for gold is not the

[3:44] same as a pawn shop. They pay for the

[3:46] metal only, not the craftsmanship.

[3:48] Because the gold is all melted down and

[3:50] sold to various manufacturers.

[3:53] >> To me, whether gold is an ugly broken

[3:57] earring or a pretty charm, it's the same

[4:00] piece of gold.

[4:01] >> We chose this pack at random to follow

[4:03] through the process. First, the contents

[4:06] are separated and photographed along

[4:07] with the customer's name and ID number.

[4:10] There's an asset test and other tests to

[4:12] figure out the exact percentage of gold.

[4:15] The price is determined by a formula

[4:17] taking into account the weight, the

[4:19] carrot, and the daily rate of gold. So,

[4:22] how does our pack do? Grand total

[4:24] $273.95.

[4:28] >> Thank you, Cash for Gold. Not everyone

[4:30] is as happy as the customers in Cash for

[4:33] Gold's ads. There have been more than

[4:35] 300 complaints filed with the Better

[4:37] Business Bureau and at least 30 more

[4:39] with the Florida Attorney General's

[4:41] office.

[4:42] >> You have a company that's done over

[4:43] 700,000 transactions has had 300

[4:46] complaints and the complaints, you know,

[4:50] at least 70% of them fall within our

[4:53] terms and conditions. As of today, the

[4:55] company's rating with the Better

[4:57] Business Bureau is a D, which means they

[4:59] have enough concerns to recommend

[5:01] caution when dealing with the company.

[5:04] Cash for Gold says its rating was

[5:06] recently lowered from a C minus, an

[5:08] acceptable BBB rating due to four

[5:10] complaints, which they say have since

[5:12] been resolved. Michelle Bedar filed a

[5:15] complaint with the BBB. She was enticed

[5:18] by the commercials and sent in a chain,

[5:20] a pendant, and a class ring. I was

[5:23] hoping I would get something close to

[5:24] what I paid for it. When I opened up the

[5:27] envelope, I saw a $5 check for all three

[5:30] items.

[5:31] >> She called to complain.

[5:32] >> He says, "Your class ring has no value

[5:35] whatsoever. It's scrap metal." I was

[5:39] very insulted with that when I heard

[5:40] that.

[5:41] >> Rod Foley also expected he'd get more

[5:43] money for his gold. He collected old

[5:45] jewelry to raise money for his church

[5:47] and sent it to Cash for Gold.

[5:49] >> This is the gold that they offer be $141

[5:53] for and I totally rejected that offer.

[5:56] >> He says he was expecting $800. After

[5:59] complaining, he says the company finally

[6:01] offered him almost $650.

[6:04] >> Based on what what I got, they're

[6:06] they're keeping about 70% and paying out

[6:09] about 30%. It doesn't seem fair to me.

[6:12] >> What about people who say they call in

[6:15] >> that your customer service people put

[6:17] them on hold and then come back and

[6:18] barter with them?

[6:19] >> Sure. It was something that I I would do

[6:22] to make the customer happy. And if it it

[6:25] came off negatively, we've stopped it

[6:27] completely at this point. We don't do it

[6:29] only because it it's just not worth it.

[6:31] We tried to do something good. People

[6:33] didn't perceive it that way and we

[6:35] stopped.

[6:36] >> Jeff Aronson says the real problem is

[6:38] that customers have unrealistic

[6:40] expectations.

[6:42] >> It's hard. It's hard for them to digest

[6:44] that what they have is not real and they

[6:46] get upset. So you get a complaint. Cash

[6:49] for gold didn't give me what I should

[6:52] have gotten. What you should have gotten

[6:55] for gold filled material is exactly what

[6:58] you got. It's not of value to us.

[7:02] >> And then you keep a percentage of it.

[7:04] Yeah.

[7:04] >> You don't you don't measure it and give

[7:07] them

[7:08] >> 100% or 99% value. Anybody that could be

[7:12] in business giving 99 or 100 or 95 or 90

[7:16] >> and what percentage do you keep?

[7:20] >> It depends on the weight. From the

[7:22] smallest smallest of the small, we pay

[7:25] out 20%. And for a normal transaction, a

[7:29] decent amount of material, we'll pay out

[7:31] 80%.

[7:33] >> Without giving the exact structure, the

[7:35] company says the percentage increases

[7:37] with every couple of ounces.

[7:39] >> Check it out. Check it out. Top dollar

[7:41] for your scrap jewelry.

[7:43] >> Because so many people are selling old

[7:45] gold now, IGI, the International

[7:47] Gemological Institute, created a web

[7:50] page to help consumers calculate the

[7:52] value of their gold. Jerry Arinwald,

[7:55] head of IGI, warns customers to be

[7:58] careful when selling their valuables.

[8:00] When a consumer is sending in a bag of

[8:02] jewelry to someone that they don't know,

[8:05] they should make a list, weigh the

[8:07] jewelry, identify what carat gold it is.

[8:10] Now, there are people who are sending in

[8:13] their jewelry and thinking, "This is my

[8:15] grandmother's prize ring. It must be

[8:17] worth a lot of money." And then they're

[8:19] shocked when they get a check for $100.

[8:22] >> Um, the sentimental value is really

[8:26] owned by the person who has that

[8:28] sentiment. We melting gold, baby.

[8:30] >> It's true. Even Cash for Gold admits you

[8:33] can often get more bucks for your bling

[8:35] elsewhere.

[8:36] >> If a jeweler can resell it, he's going

[8:38] to give you more money. Cash for gold is

[8:40] not the best alternative for everything.

[8:42] And if you read in there, it says quite

[8:45] quite clearly, we are not the highest

[8:47] price, but we are a tremendous service

[8:50] business. And that's what we pride

[8:52] ourselves on

[8:53] >> right here, folks. 75% off. In a tough

[8:56] economy, it's tempting to take any check

[8:58] straight to the bank. But not knowing

[9:00] the value of what you've got could give

[9:02] new meaning to the term fool's gold.

[9:05] This is Vicky Mabry for Night Line in

[9:08] Fort Lauderdale. Indeed, for the

[9:10] consumer, knowledge is definitely power.

[9:12] Our thanks to Vicky Mab. And when we

[9:14] come back, from the sewers to the

[9:17] streets, the dirtiest jobs in America,

[9:21] all done by one man.

[9:58] year.

[9:58] >> I'm working from the road today.

[10:02] >> Last year, more than half a million

[10:04] investors opened an account at TDI

[10:06] Trade. Maybe because TDI trade's fair

[10:09] and straightforward pricing made sense

[10:11] to them. Maybe for the range of

[10:12] products, not just stocks, but bonds,

[10:15] mutual funds, CDs, and the clear

[10:17] objective guidance to help them choose.

[10:19] Or maybe because the people on the phone

[10:21] or in the branch just seemed like good

[10:23] people to work with, knowledgeable and

[10:25] nice. So why not talk to TDM Trade?

[10:28] There's never been a better time for a

[10:30] second opinion.

[11:18] >> Are you and your gray hair facing an

[11:20] identity crisis?

[11:21] >> My hair says experience. My hair says

[11:23] energy.

[11:24] >> Touch of gray. The best of both. Combs

[11:26] away a little gray. Never too much. Just

[11:28] right.

[11:28] >> Now I look like I know what I'm doing

[11:30] and can still do it.

[11:31] >> Touch of gray.

[11:32] >> Private practices. Kate Walsh on an

[11:34] allnew Jimmy. Coming up on ABC.

[11:37] >> Sig Freed and Roy loved by millions.

[11:40] Breathtaking to watch. But then it all

[11:42] stopped. Now, miraculously, they're

[11:45] back. Friday night at 9:8 central, Sig

[11:47] Freed and Roy. The magic returns. That's

[11:49] Friday night at a special time, 98

[11:51] central on ABC.

[11:53] >> Wow.

[11:54] >> What?

[11:55] >> Nothing. Nothing.

[11:56] >> I can take this whenever you guys are

[11:57] ready.

[11:58] >> Oh, thanks.

[11:58] >> Cuz I paid for it last, so you know.

[12:02] >> That's it. Love this place. Free Wi-Fi,

[12:05] free paper,

[12:06] >> free refills.

[12:07] >> If you like free, you'll love Wamu. Free

[12:09] checking. Get free online banking, a

[12:11] free debit card, free checks, and free

[12:12] ATM cash withdrawals.

[12:14] >> Do you have a biscotti? Another one.

[12:15] >> Biscotti's free.

[12:16] >> Yeah, I knew that.

[12:18] >> Free checking from Wu. Now backed by the

[12:20] power of Chase.

[12:33] For many Americans, the workplace has

[12:35] become a largely sterile environment. a

[12:38] desk with a computer and year round air

[12:40] conditioning. But one man relishes jobs

[12:43] that literally stink yet still have to

[12:46] be done. Indeed, he's built an entire

[12:48] television career on celebrating some of

[12:51] the dirtiest occupations in America. As

[12:54] Brian Rooney now reports.

[12:56] >> All right. You're metal and I'm carpet.

[12:58] >> All right. You putting carpet there?

[12:59] >> Yeah, I'll put metal here.

[13:00] >> A good place to talk to Mike Row is at

[13:03] the recycling dump outside San

[13:04] Francisco.

[13:05] >> So, this is your favorite garbage dump?

[13:07] This is my office. He's comfortable in a

[13:09] dirty place because that's his job.

[13:11] >> Now, get ready. Get ready. Get ready.

[13:14] Get ready

[13:16] to get dirty.

[13:17] >> As the host of the Discovery Channel

[13:19] show, Dirty Jobs, Mike Row is the

[13:21] chronicler of people who do nasty,

[13:23] dangerous, and unseleelebrated work.

[13:25] >> Come on now.

[13:26] >> I'm trying.

[13:26] >> Shrimp fisherman.

[13:28] >> There you go.

[13:29] >> Maggot farmer.

[13:30] >> Thinking all the picnics these guys have

[13:32] ruined over the years.

[13:35] charcoal maker.

[13:38] >> The good news is it's perfectly safe.

[13:40] >> It used to be work used to look like

[13:42] work. Work used to be dirty all the

[13:44] time. And now, you know, with financial

[13:46] services being such a dominant force in

[13:48] the economy, the notion of a good job

[13:50] looks different. So, people no longer

[13:52] associate a good living with guys who do

[13:55] this kind of work. He pays tribute by

[13:57] doing the job, working next to people

[13:59] who do it for a living.

[14:02] >> Wind farm technician.

[14:03] >> Oh, yeah. That's high.

[14:06] >> That really is a heck of a deal.

[14:10] >> Chinatown garbage collector.

[14:12] >> Give it to me. Oh,

[14:15] >> we're doing okay. We haven't been yelled

[14:17] at yet.

[14:18] >> The day is young, my friend. If

[14:20] history's any indicator the yelling will

[14:21] start.

[14:22] >> So, you have you have plenty of moments

[14:24] where you really have to suck it up. I I

[14:26] don't want to do this, but you do it

[14:27] anyways.

[14:28] >> Yeah. But, you know, it's important that

[14:30] the show not be about me overcoming some

[14:34] kind of fear. This show is saying the

[14:36] guy I'm with or the woman I'm with does

[14:39] it every day. So, if I can't at least

[14:41] hang on tight for one day, well, what

[14:43] good am I?

[14:44] >> So, you're good at failing next to

[14:45] confident people.

[14:47] >> Cable's most successful failure. Ask

[14:49] around.

[14:51] >> He started out to be an actor and ended

[14:53] up singing in the Baltimore Opera.

[15:00] Hold on.

[15:04] >> He moved on to hawking cubic zirconium

[15:07] for a cable shopping channel.

[15:09] >> This is legal, right?

[15:11] >> Before landing the job, as he says,

[15:13] impersonating the host of Evening

[15:15] Magazine in San Francisco. And it was

[15:18] for that show that he performed his

[15:19] first dirty job. I'm going in

[15:22] >> up to his armpit, artificially

[15:24] inseminating cows.

[15:27] >> I'm surprised, Terry, how much you have

[15:29] to lean into it.

[15:30] >> He sold the idea of dirty jobs.

[15:33] >> Okay, today it's all about durability.

[15:34] >> Now he's an industry unto himself.

[15:37] Spokesman for Ford trucks.

[15:39] >> That's tough.

[15:40] >> It's January and the hunt for Opilio

[15:42] Crab is on. And he works that baritone

[15:45] voice as a narrator. Discovery's popular

[15:48] crab fishing show, Deadliest Catch.

[15:51] >> The Vast Bearing Sea. Over a million

[15:54] square miles of the world's most violent

[15:56] and unpredictable waters.

[15:58] >> Over a million square miles of the

[16:00] world's most violent and unpredictable

[16:02] waters.

[16:03] >> And home of the deadliest catch, Alaskan

[16:05] crab.

[16:06] >> And home of the deadliest catch, Alaskan

[16:09] crab.

[16:10] >> I'm out.

[16:10] >> You're my

[16:11] >> He's master of on the job humor that

[16:14] makes the workday pass. No. Well, they

[16:16] also use some of this for cosmetics.

[16:18] >> He narrates by Wise Crack.

[16:20] >> Well, my skin just feels smooth and

[16:22] supple right here.

[16:23] >> Yeah.

[16:24] >> Just so we're clear.

[16:25] >> You want me to go in the swamp with the

[16:27] alligators and the cotton mouths and

[16:29] pull the boat?

[16:30] >> What's real are people getting through

[16:32] the day with a laugh and a slap on the

[16:35] back and, you know, maybe a blue joke

[16:37] here and there, but just the sensibility

[16:39] of getting the job done and then going

[16:41] home. If you're not laughing honestly

[16:43] doing this kind of work, the joke's on

[16:46] you.

[16:47] >> He's been dragged through the mud and

[16:50] drenched with pig slops,

[16:52] bitten by snakes.

[16:55] >> I hate my job. AH, THIS SUCKS.

[17:00] >> He's been bitten by sharks.

[17:01] >> Now, how does somebody convince you that

[17:04] >> this is okay? You can do this and you'll

[17:06] you'll live or don't.

[17:07] >> Yeah, it's money.

[17:08] >> It's money.

[17:10] He specializes in having no idea what

[17:13] he's doing.

[17:13] >> I don't even really know how to drive

[17:15] one of these.

[17:15] >> Driving all sorts of power vehicles.

[17:17] Just so we're clear.

[17:18] >> You wait. You're like a big 5-year-old.

[17:20] You like driving trucks and buses and uh

[17:22] dump trucks and

[17:24] >> getting dirty.

[17:25] >> Does carpet pad qualify as carpet?

[17:27] >> Yes, absolutely.

[17:30] >> Um people toss me the keys to anything.

[17:33] People let me drive anything. Back hose,

[17:36] forklifts, front end loaders, dump

[17:38] trucks, bobcats. I flipped them all.

[17:40] Have you ever boked? Have you ever said,

[17:42] "I I I can't do this or I won't do

[17:44] this." You b Yeah. Yeah. But I mean,

[17:49] what'd you B at?

[17:51] Well, the last time I took a really deep

[17:54] breath and thought twice was on the Meno

[17:56] Bridge.

[17:57] >> Holy cow.

[17:58] >> And uh the job was to change a light

[18:00] bulb on the top tower. His willingness

[18:02] to do anything makes him the television

[18:04] buddy of people who get dirty every day.

[18:07] If he was a politician, the guys in the

[18:09] truck bay would be his base.

[18:11] >> What are you working on?

[18:13] >> Got a hair system in

[18:15] >> always something, isn't it?

[18:19] sure. Do you charge extra if Mike helps?

[18:22] >> Oh, if Mike helps. Hell yeah.

[18:24] >> I mean, that's the connection of your

[18:26] show that you you've you found people

[18:28] who actually do things and make things.

[18:31] um or fix things.

[18:32] >> Absolutely. But you know, and it's

[18:34] almost like it's a rarity.

[18:36] >> It is a rarity. Uh but it's also this

[18:39] really familiar primal thing that once

[18:41] you remind people, they go, "Oh, you

[18:42] know what? My dad and my uncle, my

[18:45] cousin, you know, and suddenly, you

[18:46] know, we're reminded of the fact that

[18:48] people with dirty jobs kind of hold the

[18:50] country together."

[18:53] >> Annie says America has strayed too far

[18:56] from doing the work. But the people I've

[18:58] met with dirty jobs who really seem

[19:00] happy in their work didn't chase that

[19:04] job down because it was the culmination

[19:07] of some dream. They stepped back and

[19:09] they looked at where everybody else was

[19:10] going and then they went the opposite

[19:12] direction. Then they figured out a way

[19:13] to be happy doing it and then they

[19:15] figured out a way to get paid.

[19:18] >> Oh yeah.

[19:18] >> Boss wants to see you in the office.

[19:20] You've been laid off

[19:21] >> again. Fired again. He'll get another

[23:42] Night Line continues from New York City

[23:45] with Martin Basher.

[23:48] >> Disturbing new allegations have emerged

[23:50] about the night pop star Rihanna was

[23:52] allegedly beaten by her boyfriend Chris

[23:54] Brown. According to the police report,

[23:57] Mr. Brown punched her in the face,

[23:59] slammed her head against the car window,

[24:01] and even tried to choke her. The

[24:03] 19-year-old singer has been charged with

[24:05] two felonies and remains free on $50,000

[24:08] bail. As Andrea Canning now reports,

[24:12] >> it was a very different spotlight for

[24:14] Chris Brown as he arrived in court

[24:16] amidst an intense crush of cameras.

[24:19] >> Yes,

[24:19] >> Brown didn't make a plea and can still

[24:21] have contact with Rihanna at her

[24:23] request.

[24:23] The court issued what is known as a

[24:26] level one protective order, ordering

[24:29] Chris Brown not to annoy, molest, or

[24:32] harass her. We feel that that's more

[24:34] than sufficient uh in this case.

[24:36] >> But the message from prosecutors is loud

[24:39] and clear. He now faces up to nearly 5

[24:41] years in prison if convicted on two

[24:43] felonies, including making criminal

[24:45] threats that would result in death. Much

[24:48] of the case has revolved around this

[24:50] chilling photo obtained by TMZ that

[24:52] shows a battered and bruised Rihanna

[24:54] from the night of February 8th.

[24:56] >> Some have questioned why you released

[24:58] that photo of Rihanna. What is your

[25:01] explanation for that?

[25:02] >> You folks released her name be long

[25:05] before this. So did we. So did

[25:07] everybody. This picture was a really

[25:09] relevant picture based on what both

[25:11] sides were talking about. I mean, they

[25:13] were all talking um through various

[25:16] people, but they were all talking.

[25:18] >> And tonight, new disturbing allegations

[25:20] in this LAPD search warrant. The pop

[25:22] superstar, real name Robin Rihanna

[25:24] Fenty, tells police the repeated beating

[25:27] began over a text message sent to Brown

[25:30] from another woman during a preg Grammy

[25:31] party. He continued to punch her in the

[25:34] face. He bit her on her left ear. Brown

[25:36] began applying pressure to Robin F's

[25:38] left and right corateed arteries,

[25:40] causing her to be unable to breathe, and

[25:41] she began to lose consciousness. The

[25:44] assault caused Robin F's mouth to fill

[25:46] with blood and blood to splatter all

[25:48] over her clothing and the interior of

[25:49] the vehicle. Police say Brown went into

[25:52] a further rage after Rihanna tried to

[25:54] call her assistant. You just did the

[25:55] stupidest thing ever. Now I'm really

[25:57] going to kill you. If the police report

[26:00] is correct on what he did to her that

[26:02] night, u she could have died slamming

[26:06] her head against, you know, parts of the

[26:08] car. She could have died.

[26:09] >> Brown and Rihanna were once one of the

[26:11] hottest couples in the music world

[26:13] together nearly 2 years with a dozen

[26:15] number one hits between them. What now

[26:17] has many baffled is how the couple could

[26:19] possibly reconcile. Last week, Brown was

[26:22] seen living it up as the two reportedly

[26:24] vacation together at Shaun Diddy Comb's

[26:26] Miami mansion. But this isn't over yet.

[26:29] TMZ's Harvey Leven says there's more

[26:31] explosive evidence to come.

[26:33] >> There was a picture out there that was

[26:36] taken the day after the incident that is

[26:38] so incredibly

[26:40] horrendous um that what I'm told is he

[26:45] cannot survive his career if this

[26:47] picture gets out.

[26:48] >> Which experts say could make a future

[26:50] plea deal and prison a reality for the

[26:53] R&B star who once had it all. I'm Andrea

[26:56] Canning for Night Line in New York.

[26:58] >> And Mr. Brown is scheduled to return to

[27:01] court on April the 6th. Our thanks to

[27:03] Andrea Canning. And when we come back,

[27:06] even GM's own auditors now declare that

[27:08] the company's chances of survival are in
