[0:06] from around the world and from CBS News
[0:09] headquarters in New York. This is the
[0:11] CBS Evening News with Dan Rather.
[0:14] >> Good evening. Ice is the key in the
[0:17] investigation of Wednesday's crash of an
[0:19] Air Florida jetliner on takeoff from
[0:21] Washington's National Airport. Ice that
[0:23] clogs the PTOAC, intombing the plane and
[0:26] more than 60 of the crash's 78 victims.
[0:30] Ice that hampers the efforts of
[0:31] searchers. And before takeoff, an ice
[0:34] buildup investigators believe may have
[0:36] caused the tragedy. Lim Tucker begins
[0:39] our coverage.
[0:40] >> This picture was made by a station WDVM
[0:43] TV cameraman at 3:40 p.m. on Wednesday,
[0:46] 15 minutes before the crash.
[0:49] Investigators believe that this is Air
[0:51] Florida Flight 90 waiting in the snow
[0:53] before takeoff. Investigators also say
[0:56] that when the picture is enlarged, they
[0:58] may be able to see whether there is ice
[1:00] on the wings. The question of ice was at
[1:03] the center of the investigation today.
[1:06] Had Air Florida 90 preparing to go to
[1:08] Tampa sat so long on the runway after
[1:11] its last deicing that it could no longer
[1:14] perform as an airplane should. Aircraft
[1:16] are finely sculptured machines. So much
[1:19] so that the least little bit of foreign
[1:20] matter in the wrong place can affect
[1:22] their performance. As aerospace engineer
[1:25] Dr. Harold Liowitz of George Washington
[1:28] University explained to us this
[1:30] afternoon,
[1:30] >> by having ice or changing the geometry,
[1:33] you're changing the drag characteristics
[1:36] of that wing. So you would not get the
[1:38] kind of speed that you'd want to become
[1:40] airborne.
