[0:02] American peacekeeping troops will go in

[0:05] only when there's a peace to keep.

[0:07] Correspondent David Martin covered

[0:09] opening day of the talks.

[0:11] President Slobodan Milosevic

[0:14] They are united only in their contempt

[0:16] for each other and their unbroken record

[0:18] of failing to honor previous agreements.

[0:20] It took Secretary of State Christopher's

[0:22] urging just to get the presidents of

[0:24] Bosnia, Croatia, and Serbia to shake

[0:26] hands. A stiff beginning to what is

[0:29] billed as the last best chance for

[1:04] want a state of their own while the

[1:05] Serbs and Croats want to carve up Bosnia

[1:08] between themselves. It's going to be

[1:10] tough going. All three presidents have

[1:13] come in with very tough lines. Nothing

[1:15] will be harder to reconcile than the

[1:17] conflicting demands over territory. The

[1:20] Serbs want a wider corridor through

[1:22] Muslim territory to the land they hold

[1:24] in the west. The Muslims want an open

[1:26] road to the enclave of Gorazde. A road

[1:29] that runs right through Serb territory.
