[0:07] An exclusive report that the US will

[0:09] give Israel the codes it needs to

[0:11] retaliate against. The battleship

[0:14] Missouri's big guns rake Iraqi

[0:16] positions. And the US military buildup

[0:19] in the desert is reported to be

[0:20] complete.

[0:23] This is the CBS Evening News. Dan Rather

[0:26] reporting tonight with a special war

[0:28] update edition. Good evening. A story

[0:31] developing this hour of a possible peace

[0:33] feeler from Saddam Hussein. We'll be

[0:36] developing that story as we can as it

[0:39] goes along. It happens against a

[0:41] backdrop of Allied war plananes, naval

[0:43] guns, and artillery combining today to

[0:46] blast away at an Iraqi troop

[0:47] concentration in Kuwait. One senior US

[0:50] military official said the three-hour

[0:52] barrage was the biggest battlefield

[0:53] action initiated by the allies and a

[0:56] dress rehearsal for a possible all-out

[0:58] ground offensive. And then there is this

[1:01] possible possible hint of a peace feeler

[1:04] from Baghdad after a meeting between

[1:06] Saddam Hussein and his Soviet envoy.

[1:08] Iraqi radio said Saddam is willing to

[1:11] cooperate with the Soviet Union in

[1:13] seeking an end to the war. No further

[1:16] details available at this moment, but as

[1:18] I say, we're checking and we'll tell you

[1:20] more as we find out details. Earlier,

[1:22] American pilots reported knocking out

[1:24] four missile launchers in western Iraq a

[1:27] day after two more Scuds fell on Israel.

[1:29] Up to now, President Bush has tried to

[1:31] keep Israel from retaliating. There are

[1:33] indications tonight that Israel will now

[1:36] get the key US technical codes for

[1:39] Israeli pilots to recognize and be

[1:42] recognized by all
