[0:28] Sitting in tonight, Brian Williams.
[0:30] Good evening. The issue of race may well
[0:33] be this nation's great divide. And
[0:35] today, in two separate courtrooms in
[0:37] cities on both coasts, the issue of
[0:40] racial hatred flared up. Both cases
[0:42] involve men, one black, one white, who
[0:45] survived savage assaults. We begin
[0:47] tonight in West Palm Beach, Florida, and
[0:49] NBC's Bob Dotson.
[0:52] Christopher Wilson has two vivid
[0:54] memories of his Florida vacation. The
[0:56] smell of gasoline on his clothes and
[0:59] someone striking a match.
[1:01] I saw the person coming around and
[1:03] splashing, and then
[1:04] came up to me and said, "Now you're
[1:05] going to die, nigger." And
[1:07] he had a black uh plastic container
[1:11] holding it and pulling it over my head.
[1:13] Two day laborers from Lakeland, Florida,
[1:16] Mark Kohut and Charles Rourke, were
[1:18] accused of abducting Wilson from a Tampa
[1:20] shopping mall, forcing him to drive to
[1:22] an open field, then setting him ablaze
[1:25] last New Year's Day. I'm crying. I'm
[1:28] crying. So, why are you doing this to
[1:30] me?
[1:31] I never did anything to anybody. Why are
[1:33] you doing this to me? Wilson suffered
[1:35] third-degree burns over 40% of his body.
