[0:01] Direct from our newsroom in Washington
[0:03] in color. This is the CBS Evening News
[0:05] with Roger Mud and Malvin Calb in
[0:08] Washington. Bruce Morton at Fort
[0:10] Benning, Georgia. Terry Drinkwater at
[0:12] Fort Carson, Colorado. Jim Kilpatrick in
[0:14] Los Angeles. Molly Safer in Knock County
[0:17] Mayo, Ireland. And a sports report with
[0:19] Haywood Hail Brun in Lexington,
[0:21] Kentucky.
[0:23] Good evening. A cluster of islands off
[0:24] the coast of East Pakistan was struck by
[0:26] a hurricane and tidal waves yesterday
[0:28] and reports tonight of the resulting
[0:30] disaster are almost unbelievable.
[0:33] Officials now estimate that as many as
[0:35] 100,000 persons may have been killed.
[0:37] The number of recovered bodies alone is
[0:39] well over 11,000 and the scene described
[0:42] by observers as one of total
[0:43] devastation. A pilot who flew over the
[0:46] area said he saw no sign of life on some
[0:48] islands known to be populated and that
[0:50] other smaller islands had simply
[0:52] disappeared. Some bodies were found
[0:54] caught in tree branches indicating the
[0:56] savage force of the storm and thousands
[0:58] of dead cattle floated in the flood
[1:00] water. The recovered bodies are being
[1:02] buried in mass graves. More arrests were
[1:05] reportedly made in Syria today as the
[1:07] military leaders of yesterday's coup
[1:09] tried to strengthen their control. Their
[1:11] troops guarded key buildings in the
[1:13] capital, Damascus, but the city was
[1:15] reported generally quiet. Syria's
[1:17] defense minister, General Hafz al-Assad,
[1:19] seized control in yesterday's coup,
[1:21] arresting President Nuredin Alatasi and
[1:24] other key officials. The events did not
[1:26] surprise Washing
