[0:05] Calling the role for Doe. Tonight, the

[0:07] Republicans officially nominate Bob Doe

[0:10] for president. And here, a dramatic

[0:12] tribute from his wife Oprah style as she

[0:15] works the audience off the podium. A new

[0:18] poll indicates Dole still has problems

[0:20] as the nagging issue of abortion

[0:23] continues to cause him trouble.

[0:32] Now, Dan Rather, Ed Bradley, Leslie

[0:36] Stall, Bob Sheeper, and Paul from the

[0:40] 1996 Republican Convention in San Diego.

[0:44] Here's Dan Rather.

[0:48] >> Good evening. He has been working for

[0:49] this moment for 16 years. Some would say

[0:52] most of his life. Tonight, Bob Dole of

[0:54] Kansas, child of the depression, wounded

[0:57] war hero, veteran US senator, will be

[1:06] present a highly choreographed tribute

[1:08] to her husband trying to work the

[1:10] convention floor, sort of Oprah Winfrey

[1:13] style. Women have been given a high

[1:15] profile at this convention, and that's

[1:17] no accident. A new CBS News poll

[1:20] indicates Dole still has major problems

[1:22] attracting women voters. Another nagging

[1:25] problem for Dole, abortion. His advisers

[1:28] are now wrangling over whether to

[1:30] include his own prolife position, as he

[1:33] calls it, in tomorrow night's acceptance

[1:34] speech. That, of course, would please

[1:36] the religious right here at the

[1:38] convention or leave it out to appeal to

[1:41] the wider audience at home, especially

[1:44] women. And while organizers think this

[1:46] tightly scripted convention has been

[1:48] playing well at home, 60 Minutes
