[0:05] hello there again and welcome to
[0:08] Wednesday's in the word we're excited as
[0:11] we dive into this new Bible study it's
[0:15] important when you study the Bible to
[0:19] know where your Bible came from we want
[0:20] you to consider the source you know a
[0:24] lot of different versions are available
[0:27] of the Bible now when you go into the
[0:29] bookstore that especially the Christian
[0:31] bookstore there's version after version
[0:33] after version and sometimes you can
[0:36] wonder well which one's the right one
[0:38] but here at Bible Baptist Church we
[0:41] believe the Bible has been preserved for
[0:44] us and that the Bible is inspired by God
[0:48] the reason why we believe that is
[0:50] because we know the source of our Bible
[0:53] the ones that we use every Sunday in our
[0:56] building and every Wednesday and in our
[0:58] daily personal life we know where that
[1:01] Bible came from and so we want to
[1:03] consider the source today but in order
[1:06] to consider the source let me share with
[1:07] you some scripture verses that I believe
[1:09] are important Psalm 1 1989 the Bible
[1:13] says forever O Lord thy word is settled
[1:17] in heaven forever o Lord thy word is
[1:21] settled in heaven when it comes to our
[1:23] Bible we know that God wrote the Word of
[1:27] God now they're different pin men who
[1:30] wrote down the words but they were
[1:33] inspired of God the Bible tells us in
[1:35] 2nd Timothy 3:16 and 17 all Scripture is
[1:39] given by inspiration of God and is
[1:42] profitable for doctrine for reproof for
[1:44] correction for instruction in
[1:47] righteousness that the man of God may be
[1:49] perfect throughly furnished unto all
[1:51] good works
[1:52] the Bible is important and the source of
[1:56] our Bible is very important we believe
[1:58] the source comes from God that's an
[2:01] important truth to remember God is the
[2:03] one who inspired men in fact the 2nd
[2:06] Peter 1:21 it says for the prophecy came
[2:08] not in old time by the will of man but a
[2:11] holy men of God spake as they were moved
[2:14] by the Holy Ghost the Holy Ghost
[2:17] we could say it this way the holy ghost
[2:20] grabbed the hand riders hand and helped
[2:23] him to write the words led by the spirit
[2:26] to pin the words to the Word of God and
[2:29] that all Scripture inspiration that word
[2:32] inspiration means God breathed God
[2:35] breathed and so God breath they spoke
[2:38] the words to the heart of the men and
[2:40] they wrote them down and it's been
[2:42] settled in heaven forever O Lord thy
[2:45] word has been settled in heaven and so
[2:46] we know that the Word of God came from
[2:50] God and that's vitally important now you
[2:53] said what about the Bible I hold in my
[2:55] hand where did it come from well it's
[2:58] important to know where you're the
[3:01] source of your Bible comes from so I'm
[3:03] going to share a little bit about that
[3:04] today but I want to help you real quick
[3:07] why it's so important to know the source
[3:10] if I set two glasses up here today with
[3:13] clear liquids in them you'd be excited
[3:16] to see what was in the glass you'd look
[3:19] at the glass and you would tell that
[3:21] there was both liquids in the glass that
[3:24] they were clear liquids you could tell
[3:27] that something may be in one of them
[3:31] that may be good or may be bad
[3:33] no no sub you say well once filled with
[3:35] bottled water and once filled with tap
[3:37] water and that's the difference well not
[3:39] exactly in fact if I told you that one
[3:42] was source was from a fresh mountain
[3:45] spring and it was clear crystal water
[3:48] you'd be excited to drink it but if in
[3:51] the other glass I told you it's 90
[3:54] percent clear crystal water and 10
[3:59] percent strychnine now strychnine is a
[4:02] clear liquid but strychnine is poisonous
[4:05] to human beings and animals and if you
[4:08] were to drink the glass that had the
[4:10] strychnine in it you'd be in trouble
[4:14] you may even cost your life but when it
[4:18] comes to the Word of God there are some
[4:21] Bibles that are 100% from God and there
[4:26] are other Bibles that are 90% maybe or
[4:30] 80 or 70
[4:32] Bible but there's also a lot of poison
[4:35] in them and if you're not careful if you
[4:38] don't know the source then you can end
[4:42] up drinking from the wrong well it could
[4:44] end up hurting your spiritual life so
[4:47] when it comes to our Bible the King
[4:50] James Bible how did it get here how do
[4:53] where did it come from
[4:56] so in our presentation today you're
[4:59] gonna see some graphs and in the
[5:01] description below this video there will
[5:03] be a link to some PDFs that could be a
[5:06] help to you in your Christian life that
[5:08] you can have alongside with this video
[5:11] to help you understand where your Bible
[5:15] came from so the Old Testament will
[5:18] start there because it came first the
[5:20] Old Testament the original autographs
[5:23] came from 1500 to 400 BC now
[5:28] unfortunately there's no surviving
[5:30] complete manuscripts they got worn out
[5:33] through use during that time the
[5:36] manuscript was a lot of animal skins and
[5:39] it just deteriorated quickly and so from
[5:43] 1500 to 400 BC we've got the Old
[5:46] Testament original autographs the ones
[5:48] written by Moses said Joshua and Samuel
[5:53] and the different prophets Isaiah and
[5:56] Jeremiah all those prophet writings they
[5:59] they were written during that timeframe
[6:01] and then under that the Old Testament
[6:03] manuscript of biblical times under the
[6:05] priesthood 1500 to 400 BC now that's
[6:10] another part of our Bible again we don't
[6:12] have any of those manuscripts that have
[6:15] survived that we're aware of after that
[6:18] comes the manuscripts from the times of
[6:19] scribes during the Talmudic era 400 BC
[6:23] to over 500 AD and many of those have
[6:27] were passed down now when it comes to
[6:30] Bible translation the work of a scribe
[6:32] we're going to get to that here in a
[6:34] couple sessions I'm going to explain how
[6:36] important that was and knowing that the
[6:39] Word of God that we hold in our hands
[6:41] today is the preserved Word of
[6:44] but the manuscripts then of the
[6:46] Masoretic xizt today and we have access
[6:56] to those from those manuscripts the
[6:59] Masoretic text came the Hebrew Masoretic
[7:01] Old Testament it was printed in 1488 AD
[7:05] again this source the Hebrew Masoretic
[7:09] Old Testament comes from the manuscripts
[7:12] before it which were copies of the
[7:14] manuscripts before them which were
[7:16] copies of the manuscripts before them
[7:19] and they were very very careful to copy
[7:22] every word and every line exactly as it
[7:28] was written and 1516 to 1517 we have the
[7:34] first romantic Bible it's the Daniel
[7:37] Boone burg Edition and that copy of the
[7:40] Word of God that source of the rabbinic
[7:43] Bible came from the Masoretic text which
[7:46] came from the manuscripts of the
[7:48] mazarites which came from the
[7:50] manuscripts from the Talmudic area which
[7:53] came from the manuscripts under the
[7:55] priesthood which came from the
[7:56] manuscripts all the way back to the
[7:58] original autographs the translation
[8:01] protocol was so vitally important to
[8:03] scribes that they would put in detail
[8:06] every single word to make sure that it
[8:10] got passed down to future generations
[8:14] after the first rabbinic Bible is the
[8:16] second rabbinic Bible the Ben Shyam
[8:18] edition 15 24 to 1525 from that edition
[8:23] we have written that shortly after that
[8:26] timeframe in 1611 the authorized King
[8:29] James Version of the Old Testament that
[8:33] version translated from Hebrew and
[8:36] Aramaic into English our Old Testament
[8:40] and in the process of translation it was
[8:43] very important to the translators to
[8:47] keep the definition and the meaning of
[8:49] the words the exact same as they could
[8:52] from the Hebrew and air
[8:55] texts so a kid in our Old Testament we
[8:58] can trace the line all the way back and
[9:02] know exactly the source of where it came
[9:06] from it's kind of like that cup of water
[9:08] that I mentioned to you if I went to the
[9:11] mountain spring and I drew it from the
[9:12] mountain spring and brought it straight
[9:14] to you I could say to you this came from
[9:17] this place during this time and I
[9:19] brought it straight to you and I can say
[9:21] definitive out our King James Bible
[9:24] where it came from how it got here and
[9:27] how you and I get to hold it in our
[9:29] hands today now that's the Old Testament
[9:32] let me tell you a little bit about the
[9:33] New Testament in the New Testament the
[9:36] original autographs were from 400 or C
[9:39] from 40 to 180 there's no surviving
[9:43] complete traditional manuscripts and
[9:47] from those original autographs we find
[9:50] the Greek vulgate was written those are
[9:53] copies of the originals so the original
[9:57] autographs were copied word-for-word
[9:59] line for line thought for thought and if
[10:03] you ever have read the doctrinal
[10:05] statement of our church you'll notice
[10:07] that it says that Bible Baptist Church
[10:09] believes in the verbal plenary
[10:12] inspiration of Scripture that's every
[10:16] word and every thought they are tied
[10:19] together because words mean things we'll
[10:22] talk about that more next week but every
[10:24] word and every thought so we from the
[10:27] Greek Vulgate we go to the traditional
[10:29] text the Byzantine manuscripts it's
[10:32] called the majority text for some and
[10:34] that we have that and again that's an
[10:36] original copy of the Greek Vulgate which
[10:39] were copies of the original autographs
[10:42] so the ones that Mark wrote the ones
[10:44] that Matthew wrote the ones that the
[10:46] Apostle Paul and the Apostle John and
[10:49] Peter wrote we have those copied down
[10:52] for us throughout history from the
[10:55] traditional text we find the minuscule
[10:58] manuscripts not minuscule because they
[11:00] were tiny but that was the name given to
[11:03] them from the 9th to the 15th century AD
[11:06] from there in 1400
[11:09] we have the Walden Zients who in the
[11:11] Italy and the Italian Alps copied down
[11:14] the Word of God from the Walden ziens we
[11:18] find the Greek text additions now it's
[11:22] important to understand something the
[11:24] Old Testament Hebrew and Aramaic New
[11:27] Testament switches over to Greek the
[11:29] reason being that was the language of
[11:31] the day when it came to writing so
[11:34] finally here we continue on the Greek
[11:36] additions we have the Erasmus he has
[11:39] five additions from 1516 to 1535 but
[11:43] again the source line is directly from
[11:47] the correct source robert Stephanus he
[11:50] had four additions in 1546 to 1550 one
[11:54] possibly even into 1550 theodore beza he
[11:59] had ten additions 1565 to 1604 and 1565
[12:04] is the one most commonly used or
[12:06] referenced but a venture in matthew
[12:09] Lovisa they had seven additions 1624 two
[12:13] 1678 one of those being in 1633 the
[12:17] texas Receptus from that texas Receptus
[12:21] that original greek language that goes
[12:23] all the way back to the original
[12:26] autographs there's a direct line as
[12:28] you'll see on the chart on the screen
[12:30] there's a direct line from point A to
[12:34] point G or whatever point we're on right
[12:37] now there's a direct line connecting all
[12:40] of those but from that Greek Texas
[12:42] Receptus we begin the English
[12:45] translations they wanted to put the Word
[12:47] of God in every man's hand
[12:50] so in 1525 215 26 we had the Tyndale
[12:54] Bible in 1535 the Coverdale Bible
[12:58] 15:37 the Matthews Bible but again all
[13:02] of these coming from being translated
[13:03] from the Greek Texas Receptus into the
[13:07] English translation from the Matthews
[13:10] Bibles you have the great Bible now the
[13:12] great Bible is really interesting do you
[13:14] know why it's called the great Bible
[13:16] because it was written in a very large
[13:18] font it's huge the manuscript is huge
[13:20] that's why they called it the great
[13:22] Bible in 1557 the Geneva Bible and in
[13:26] 1560 I should say in 1557 the New
[13:30] Testament of the Geneva Bible in 1560
[13:33] the Geneva Bible was completed from the
[13:36] Texas Receptus and the Hebrew and
[13:38] Aramaic text that we mentioned from the
[13:41] Old Testament in 1568 you have the
[13:44] bishops Bible and then in 1611 you have
[13:47] the King James Version of the Bible
[13:50] now again these English translations
[13:53] came from the correct Greek text the
[13:55] Texas Receptus it's important to know
[13:58] the source the direct line so I could
[14:00] say to you this way as I said earlier I
[14:03] can say that I went to the mountain
[14:05] spring I got the cup of water directly
[14:08] from the mountain spring and I brought
[14:10] it to you and when you hold a King James
[14:12] Version of the Bible in your hand you
[14:15] can say that you've got it from the
[14:16] original autographs all the way brought
[14:19] down into your English language there's
[14:22] a direct line of the source now you'll
[14:24] notice on the screen and also in the
[14:28] PDFs that are listed below there was
[14:30] some backing up to the fifth century
[14:32] some corrupted manuscripts that survived
[14:36] there are two different branches off of
[14:39] these original autographs you have the
[14:42] Western texts and then you have the
[14:44] Alexandrian text you the western text
[14:48] was used for the Latin text and the
[14:50] Roman Catholic Bible Catholicism one of
[14:53] their own Bible so you have the Latin
[14:56] Vulgate who is written by Jerome now
[14:59] that's not the same as the traditional
[15:01] text it's larger it's got some extra the
[15:04] books at it in if you've ever picked up
[15:07] a Catholic Bible you'll notice it has
[15:09] the Old Testament the New Testament but
[15:11] there's a spot in the middle with a
[15:13] section called the Apocrypha that has
[15:16] additional books an additional texts
[15:19] that are not found to be in the original
[15:23] autographs not only from there you have
[15:26] deletions from the traditional texts
[15:28] dealing with the Ascension atonement and
[15:31] more so they leave words out now if you
[15:33] remember we said that all
[15:35] scripture is given by inspiration of God
[15:37] and is profitable every word every line
[15:40] every thought we also mentioned in
[15:43] Psalms that is said forever O Lord thy
[15:45] word is settled in heaven so when you
[15:48] take something out when you pull away
[15:50] from it you change the meaning of the
[15:52] text the church fathers who love these
[15:56] Western text where ireenie astre tholian
[15:59] cypress and Justin the martyr those were
[16:02] men who adhered it to the Western text
[16:05] now you have the Alexandrian text they
[16:08] came out of Egypt in Africa they're not
[16:11] the same as a traditional text they're
[16:13] actually shorter but they attack the
[16:16] deity of Christ
[16:17] now all English translations since 1881
[16:21] except for the King James Version and
[16:24] the New King James Version are from
[16:26] these texts the critical text is called
[16:30] the Westcott and Hort text in 1881 now
[16:34] those texts take out words they're
[16:38] leaving out things that are vitally
[16:41] important in fact you would look at some
[16:45] of the verses in the NIV the NA SV the
[16:48] ESV the message Bible now the message
[16:52] Bible really is just a man's commentary
[16:54] on what he thinks the Bible says but the
[16:57] ESV the NIV in the NA s read three of
[17:00] the more popular versions those versions
[17:02] they're all come from the Alexandrian
[17:05] text now I'll tell you what would happen
[17:07] with the translator a translator are
[17:10] ascribed as they would write the words
[17:12] as I should say a scribe not a
[17:14] translator as the scribe would write the
[17:17] words if he made one mistake on the page
[17:20] he would take that page and toss it into
[17:23] the trash and dispose of it because he
[17:27] knew how important it was to have it be
[17:30] 100% accurate they didn't have whiteout
[17:34] in those days so you couldn't go back
[17:36] and wide it out so at the end of the
[17:40] time we find that they would go back in
[17:43] and rewrite a brand-new page now if you
[17:46] study that Alex
[17:47] in Texas found in Egypt and Africa
[17:49] you'll discover this important truth
[17:51] they found them in the trash they found
[17:54] them in the disposal trash there in
[17:57] Egypt so in a place where scribes threw
[17:59] the trash out that's where they find
[18:02] these texts and they use that to bring
[18:04] it in and say this is the Word of God
[18:07] it's important for us to also understand
[18:10] this knowing the source of your Bible
[18:13] and where your Bible comes from gives
[18:15] you an assurance that you truly do hold
[18:19] in your hand the Word of God now we're
[18:23] gonna try our best each week to keep
[18:25] these - about 15 minutes I covered a lot
[18:28] of information I literally covered from
[18:31] the Old Testament times all the way up
[18:34] until today but I want you to remember
[18:37] this important truth the source of where
[18:39] your Bible comes from helps you to know
[18:42] that you're standing upon the Word of
[18:44] God so if you haven't in I've here in
[18:48] ASV or ESV lookup some of the verses in
[18:51] there and compare them to the King James
[18:54] Version and see if some words change
[18:57] because when words change it changes the
[19:00] doctrinal truth that's in there we'll
[19:03] talk more about that next week but I
[19:05] thank you today for coming along this
[19:07] journey this is lesson number one and
[19:10] we've got a quite a few lessons to go
[19:12] but we want to help you to know that you
[19:15] hold in your hand the Word of God and
[19:17] the Bible truly can change your life if
[19:20] you allow it to and again thanks for
[19:23] watching today and we look forward to
[19:26] this journey as we journey together on
[19:28] Wednesdays in the word and we hope to
[19:30] see you in church on Wednesday night
[19:32] here at Bible Baptist Church here in El
[19:34] Reno Oklahoma but remember - hi God's
[19:37] Word in your heart that you might not
[19:39] sin against God studying the Word of God
[19:42] is vitally important and today we want
[19:45] you to take every Wednesday and be in
[19:48] the word thanks for tuning in we'll see
[19:51] you next time
