[1:16] avoid going 0 and2 in a Sunday night
[1:18] battle with the Bengals. Cornerback Pat
[1:19] Sertan doubtful to play tomorrow with a
[1:22] groin injury. So Miami secondary will
[1:24] have their hands full. Last week,
[1:25] Bengals QB Carson Palmer threw 238 yards
[1:28] and two touchdowns on the Jets. Receiver
[1:31] Chad Johnson had a 99 yard game.
[1:34] >> You definitely have to be aware of what
[1:35] he of where he is on the field,
[1:36] especially when you're a top-notch
[1:37] receiver like he is. And you know, they
[1:39] have a couple other good ones over
[1:40] there, too. So, u they definitely
[1:41] present some problems, but we have to go
[1:42] and handle them.
[1:43] >> They got a good group of guys, very
[1:45] talented, catch the ball real well and
[1:47] block, you know. So, we got a challenge.
[1:49] We just got to go out there and play
[1:50] ball and, you know, fly around and have
[1:52] fun. Uh we just got to go out there and
[1:53] be physical with them and you know
[1:55] disrupt their timing. Uh they're a good
[1:56] offense. You know, we've been watching
[1:57] them on tape. They they come out their
[1:59] breaks well. You know, the quarterback
[2:00] has a good strong arm. So, it's going to
[2:02] be a big challenge this weekend. We're
[2:03] looking forward to it.
[2:04] >> The Marlins pulled together 13 hits last
[2:07] night against the division leading
[2:08] Braves. Good. But they scored only once

[2:14] some wild card ground. Starting the day
[2:16] four and a half games behind San

[3:07] after the morning session. Phil
[3:09] Mickelson nailing the birdie putt on
[3:11] five. He and David Toms win their match
[3:14] four and three. But the Europeans take
[3:16] the rest of the afternoon matches. And
[3:18] after day two, Europe leads 11 to five
[3:20] with 12 singles matches tomorrow. Europe
[3:22] needs only three points to win the RDER
[3:25] Cup. That's a look at sports. I'm Guy
[3:27] Rawlings. Martha, back to you.
[3:28] >> All right, Guy. Thank you so much. And

[3:52] under the gun. 10 more hostages grabbed
[3:55] in Iraq. Threats to execute more
[3:57] Americans and another deadly car
[3:59] bombing.
[4:00] Ivan's wake. Floodwaters swamped the
[4:03] eastern half of the nation. And now the
[4:05] long-term misery for those who survived
[4:07] the storm in Florida.
[4:10] In-depth, the face of terror. Who is the
[4:13] mastermind behind the terrorist attacks
[4:15] on Russia?
[4:17] And Home Run Derby. Baseball's most
[4:20] exclusive club has a new member, and
[4:22] he's not like the others.
[4:27] From NBC News World Headquarters in New
[4:30] York, this is NBC Nightly News with
[4:33] Brian Williams.
[4:34] >> Good evening. The news from Iraq is very
[4:37] bad again tonight. There's been another
[4:39] outbreak of violence and that means
[4:41] civilians and soldiers, Americans and
[4:43] others are being targeted, captured, and
[4:46] killed. And it's all designed to send a
[4:48] message to the American government and
[4:50] the Iraqi government that the view of
[4:53] one Iraq is not shared by all Iraqis. We
[4:56] begin in Baghdad tonight with NBC's Mike
[4:58] Kersh.
[5:03] >> 10 more hostages reported taken in Iraq
[5:05] today. Their nationalities so far
[5:07] unknown. Apparently employees of an
[5:10] American Turkish firm and threatened
[5:12] with execution in three days if their
[5:14] company doesn't pull out of Iraq.
[5:17] >> This following pictures earlier today of
[5:19] the two American hostages on Al Jazer
[5:21] television. Jack Hensley of Georgia,
[5:24] Eugene Armstrong with family in Michigan
[5:26] and a British man were grabbed two days
[5:28] ago from their house in Baghdad's
[5:30] affluent Mansour district in a daring
[5:32] early morning raid by 10 gunmen. and my
[5:34] job consists of installing and
[5:37] furnishing camps.
[5:39] >> This kidnapping operation claimed today
[5:40] by Jordanian Abu Musab Al Zarqawi,
[5:43] threatening the beheading of the
[5:45] hostages in 48 hours unless all Iraqi
[5:48] women held at the notorious Abu Grae
[5:50] prison and another prison in the south
[5:52] are released. The US denies it is
[5:54] holding any female Iraqi prisoners at
[5:56] those facilities. Snatching Americans
[5:58] right in the heart of Baghdad in broad
[6:00] daylight is just the latest tactic of an
[6:03] increasingly daring and sophisticated
[6:05] insurgency now using many methods to
[6:07] attack. Two more American soldiers
[6:09] killed and eight wounded today in
[6:11] Baghdad when a suicide car bomber
[6:13] slammed into their convoy. Another
[6:15] suicide car bombing attack today on an
[6:17] Iraqi National Guard recruiting station
[6:19] in the northern city of Kirkuk. At least
[6:22] 20 killed, 16 wounded. Some,200 of
[6:25] Iraq's security forces seen as
[6:27] collaborators with the US have been
[6:29] killed by insurgents. Local business and
[6:31] political leaders are targets, too.
[6:33] Today, a senior Iraqi oil official
[6:35] nearly escaped assassination, while the
[6:37] body of a deputy regional governor was
[6:39] found riddled with bullets.
[6:41] >> The security situation in Iraq is so bad
[6:44] right now that the jihadists and the
[6:46] insurgency frankly think they control
[6:47] the streets.
[6:48] >> In fact, US forces have had to pull out
[6:51] of some key towns like Fallujah. And now
[6:53] only strike insurgents from a distance
[6:55] with warplanes and artillery
[6:58] with civilians caught in the crossfire
[7:00] turning more ordinary Iraqis against
[7:03] Americans here. Americans like Jack
[7:05] Hensley and Eugene Armstrong who came to
[7:07] help rebuild this country. Mike Kersh,
[7:10] NBC News, Baghdad. So with those scenes
[7:13] from Iraq making up part of the
[7:15] backdrop, the campaign for the
[7:17] presidency continues with just 45 days
[7:19] to go until Americans vote. And the
[7:22] issue of national security and America's
[7:24] place in the world is looming large. And
[7:27] with the Kerry campaign now facing the
[7:29] serious prospect of watching the race
[7:32] slip through their hands. We have two
[7:34] reports tonight. Beginning with NBC's
[7:36] David Gregory who is traveling with the
[7:38] president
[7:39] >> that choice. I will defend America every
[7:42] time.
[7:44] With the war a central issue on the
[7:45] campaign trail, the president is
[7:47] preparing a week-long effort to convince
[7:49] Americans that conditions inside Iraq
[7:52] are not as dire as recent violence
[7:53] suggests.
[7:55] >> This week, Mr. Bush will encounter war
[7:57] critics in New York when he addresses
[7:58] the United Nations General Assembly
[8:00] about conditions in Iraq. And next
[8:02] Thursday, for the first time, the
[8:04] president welcomes Iraqi Prime Minister
[8:06] Iat Alawi to the White House. In his
[8:09] weekly radio address today, Mr. Bush
[8:10] said the US and its allies must show
[8:12] resolve as Iraq struggles toward
[8:14] democracy, but predicted more violence.
[8:17] >> Terrorist enemies are trying to stop the
[8:19] progress of both those countries, and
[8:21] their violent and merciless attacks may
[8:23] increase as elections draw near.
[8:25] >> Despite criticism from Senator Kerry and
[8:28] some Republicans who said this week,
[8:29] "The US is not winning in Iraq and a
[8:32] growing insurgency US forces are
[8:34] struggling to contain." The president
[8:36] remains outwardly confident. In an
[8:39] interview with the Union leader of New
[8:40] Hampshire published today, he dismissed
[8:42] this week's national intelligence
[8:44] estimate, which warned of potential
[8:46] civil war in Iraq by next year. The
[8:48] Iraqis are defying the dire predictions
[8:51] of a lot of people by moving toward
[8:53] democracy, the president said.
[8:55] Campaigning in North Carolina Friday,
[8:57] Mr. Bush spoke more extensively about a
[8:59] US exit strategy.
[9:01] >> Once we get these folks trained and get
[9:03] them on the path to stability democracy,
[9:05] our troops are coming home with the
[9:06] honor they earned.
[9:09] Despite voter anxiety over the
[9:11] president's handling of Iraq, he has
[9:13] widened his lead over Senator Kerry. A
[9:16] new poll shows an eight-point advantage.
[9:19] Bush campaign advisers feel they have
[9:21] successfully undermined K's national
[9:23] security credentials by exposing his
[9:25] inconsistent positions on the Iraq war.
[9:28] The CBS News New York Times poll found
[9:31] 60% of respondents said they did not
[9:34] have confidence in Mr. carry to deal
[9:36] wisely with an international crisis.
[9:38] Nevertheless, the White House knows that
[9:40] Iraq remains the most unpredictable
[9:43] factor in this race now entering its
[9:45] final stage. David Gregory, NBC News,
[9:48] with the president in Kenny Bunkport,
[9:50] Maine.
[9:52] This is Carl Kinttonia in Boston where
[9:54] today John Kerry and his wife tried to
[9:56] keep up with the Bushes taping an
[9:58] episode of Dr. filled.
