[0:00] The point.
[0:05] From ABC, this is World News Tonight
[0:08] with Peter Jennings. Tonight reporting
[0:10] from Washington, Sam Donaldson.
[0:13] Good evening. The first wave of
[0:14] returning US military personnel came
[0:16] home today from the Persian Gulf. Came
[0:18] home to a reception the likes of which
[0:20] the veterans of America's last war,
[0:22] Vietnam, never saw.
[0:24] Like almost everything else in the
[0:26] highly successful US effort in the Gulf,
[0:28] it all happened in story book fashion.
[0:31] There were happy loved ones, cheering
[0:32] crowds, and the thanks of a grateful
[0:34] nation.
[0:36] The very first troops to be sent to the
[0:37] Gulf last August were from the 82nd
[0:39] Airborne Division based at Fort Bragg,
[0:41] North Carolina. Some of them were among
[0:44] today's arrivals, and ABC's Al Dale was
[0:47] there.
[0:50] They had been waiting for 7 months,
[0:52] almost to the day. Anticipation made a
[0:55] cold rainy day bearable, and finally
[0:57] they were here.
[1:02] More than 900 soldiers of the 82nd back
[1:05] on American soil. The official welcoming
[1:07] ceremony was cut short after the waiting
[1:09] family members began chanting let them
[1:11] go.
[1:14] And so they did. Suddenly bedlam on the
[1:17] tarmac as soldiers and those they had
[1:19] left behind were reunited.
[1:22] Happiest day of my life.
[1:24] Thank you, Lord. Thank you, Jesus. What
[1:26] can I get you?
[1:28] He's got to be here. He's got to be
[1:30] here.
[1:31] It took a while for some to find each
[1:33] other.
[1:34] Who are you looking for? My husband.
[1:35] WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO NOW?
[1:37] WHAT ARE you going to do when YOU FIND
[1:38] HIM? YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW.
[1:40] THIS IS A particularly joyous homecoming
[1:42] because the 82nd, which saw action de
