[0:00] In recent weeks, some broadcasters have
[0:01] said that highdeinition TV can't earn
[0:04] back the huge cost of new digital
[0:06] equipment. Instead, they've hinted they
[0:08] might use only part of this new digital
[0:10] frequency for their broadcast signals
[0:12] and use the rest of the signal to send
[0:14] out other video or text. And some of
[0:16] this data, like electronic yellow pages,
[0:19] stock quotes, they could charge for. At
[0:22] today's hearing, one powerful committee
[0:24] chairman said if broadcasters back away
[0:26] from highde television, it would cost
[0:28] them. But it is up to Congress to make
[0:32] certain that American taxpayers receive
[0:34] something in return for the nonHDTV use
[0:38] of that valuable public airway.
[0:40] >> For their part, broadcasters assured the
[0:43] committee they would keep their promise.
[0:45] >> Broadcasters have made a compact with
[0:48] the Congress concerning highdefinition
[0:50] television. We will meet our
[0:53] commitments. We know for certain that
[0:55] broadcasters will begin transmitting
[0:57] digital television signals in some major
[0:59] markets next year. What precisely will
[1:02] we be seeing? Nobody really has a clue.
