[0:00] Here's six
[0:04] from ABC. This is World News Tonight
[0:08] with Peter Jennings. Good evening. Tanks
[0:10] in the streets, shots in the night.
[0:12] Soviet politicians involved in the coup
[0:14] against Mr. Gorbachoff now allegedly in
[0:16] their sick beds. There isn't very much
[0:18] that is clear in the Soviet Union
[0:19] tonight except this. The most important
[0:22] politician in the country to be freely
[0:23] elected, Boris Yeltson is now the
[0:26] central symbol of resistance to those
[0:28] who still have Mikail Gorbachov under
[0:30] house arrest. And President Bush has
[0:32] told the world that he stands with
[0:34] Yeltson and Gorbachoff. Our first report
[0:36] is from Jim Lori who is in Moscow.
[0:41] Jim, go ahead.
[0:43] Peter, there was confrontation in the
[0:46] streets of Moscow tonight. A short
[0:48] distance away from the Russian

[0:59] confronted by a small crowd of people.

[1:04] imposed 11 p.m. curfew. The people tried
[1:07] to talk to the tank drivers, tried to
[1:10] persuade them to turn around in their
[1:12] move towards the Russian Federation
[1:14] building and the soldiers then fired
[1:17] into the air a burst of machine gun fire
[1:20] to scare the people away. Now, one
[1:23] eyewitness told me that after that
[1:26] incident, at least one person was
[1:29] injured by the t by the tank movement
[1:32] and possibly one person was killed by
[1:35] sliding under the tank treads. That an
[1:38] eyewitness report just a short time ago.
[1:41] Generally speaking, around the Russian
[1:43] Federation building, people are defying
[1:46] the
