[0:02] From ABC, [music]

[0:04] this is a special 1hour edition of World

[0:06] News Tonight with Peter Jennings. Good

[0:09] evening. We begin tonight with some of

[0:10] the basics. The Iraqis said today that

[0:12] Allied airmen who've been captured will

[0:14] be used in an effort to prevent attack

[0:17] on some Iraqi targets. President Bush

[0:19] says it will not change the war. There

[0:21] have now been almost 5,000 combat

[0:23] missions against Iraq and occupied

[0:24] Kuwait. But the Pentagon concedes it is

[0:27] having a hard time with the weather,

[0:29] which the generals and the admirals also

[0:30] site as the reason for some

[0:32] contradictory reporting on the

[0:34] effectiveness of the overall campaign.

[0:36] We begin with ABC's Bill Riker, who is

[0:38] in Saudi Arabia.

[0:40] >> 5 4 3 2 1 launch.

[0:49] The 5-day old air campaign concentrated

[0:51] again today on targeting and eliminating

[0:54] Iraq's Scud missile launchers. Military

[0:57] estimates of how many launchers Iraq has

[1:00] and how many have been knocked out vary.

[1:03] >> In accordance with our campaign plan, we

[1:05] will continue and have aggressively

[1:07] pursued launchers when we find them and

[1:10] when we fix them and when we can attack

[1:12] them. And we'll continue to do that. But

[1:14] low clouds again slowed down the Allied

[1:16] air punch. The sordy rate dropped 50% in

[1:19] the last 24 hours. One reason why flyers

[1:22] have been unable to track down and

[1:24] destroy Iraq's mobile launchers.

[1:26] >> Not much going on. The clouds kind of

[1:28] affect a lot of things going on today.

[1:30] So

[1:32] hopefully it'll clear out, be able to

[1:33] get some get some ordinance back up

[1:35] there.

[1:36] >> Weather has not affected the bombing of

[1:38] fixed
