[0:06] >> From ABC, this is a special 1hour

[0:09] edition [music] of World News Tonight

[0:11] with Peter Jennings.

[0:13] >> Good evening. Operation Desert Storm is

[0:15] now 24 hours old and the White House

[0:17] says do not be lulled into thinking it

[0:19] will all be quick or easy. At this

[0:21] moment last night, Gary Shepard, ABC's

[0:24] Gary Shepard was on the phone with us

[0:25] from Baghdad. The night sky, he was

[0:27] saying, was lighting up like 100 Fourth

[0:30] of July. Well, now we know why. 100

[0:33] Tomahawk cruise missiles, more than a

[0:35] thousand sortizes by fighter planes from

[0:37] the US, Britain, France, and with the

[0:39] participation of Saudi Arabia and Kuwait

[0:41] as well. The defense secretary, Richard

[0:44] Cheney, says only one US aircraft has

[0:46] been lost. The pilot, not yet

[0:48] identified, has been killed. The British

[0:50] say they lost one plane, apparently from

[0:52] engine trouble. And the Kuwaitis say

[0:54] that one of their planes was shot down

[0:57] as well. It is now the middle of the

[0:59] night in the Persian Gulf. The there are

[1:02] actually reports from there at the

[1:03] moment that there has been renewed

[1:04] bombing on Baghdad this evening. The

[1:06] administration says there's going to be

[1:08] no letup, no pause for peace. If Saddam

[1:11] Hussein wants to stop the fighting, says

[1:13] the White House, he must surrender.

[1:16] ABC's Bill Riker is in eastern Saudi

[1:18] Arabia. We're going to begin tonight's

[1:20] broadcast with him taking us through the

[1:22] day based on the information he has been

[1:24] able to glean from military operations

[1:26] throughout the country. Bill,
