[0:00] Oregon has strong laws

[0:02] >> of the most powerful season of House.

[0:06] >> You like kiss me, don't you?

[0:07] >> I always want to kiss you. All new

[0:09] House. Viewer discretion advised

[0:11] tomorrow at 8:7 central on Fox.

[0:17] >> Schools closing as the flu outbreak

[0:20] raises fears closer to home. Find out if

[0:22] your child will be heading to class.

[0:24] Plus, the first steps you should take if

[0:26] someone in your family comes down with

[0:28] symptoms.

[0:30] A Northwest girl flying across the

[0:32] country by herself has a bad trip home.

[0:35] >> Started getting more shaky and my heart

[0:36] started racing.

[0:37] >> Why her mother says a flight attendant

[0:39] in charge of taking care of her is to

[0:41] blame. A night of karaoke hit a bad note

[0:44] when a large fight broke out inside a

[0:46] local restaurant. See how one gesture

[0:48] set the whole thing off. But first,

[0:51] three local kids found home alone and

[0:54] living in disgusting conditions.

[0:56] >> The kids deserve better. Find out what

[0:58] police discovered when they walked into

[0:59] the home. That's First on Fox.

[1:03] >> And good evening. Thanks for joining us

[1:05] tonight. I'm Chad Carter

[1:06] >> and I'm Sophie Song. First on Fox, a

[1:08] local mother and her boyfriend are

[1:09] facing criminal charges after police say

[1:12] they repeatedly left three young

[1:14] children alone at night living in filth.

[1:17] Albany police arrested the couple

[1:19] yesterday morning after officers

[1:21] received an anonymous tip about the

[1:23] situation. KPTV's Mark Hammeran is live

[1:25] in the mobile newsroom with the very

[1:27] latest on the investigation. Mark.

[1:29] >> Well, Sophie, police say the kids were

[1:30] not only left alone on several occasions

[1:33] in filthy conditions, but they say there

[1:35] were also two registered sex offenders

[1:38] living on the property.

[1:40] On the corner of 9inth and Jefferson

[1:42] sits a house littered with trash,

[1:44] halfeaten food, and beer bottles in the

[1:46] front porch.

[1:47] And while nobody answered the door this

[1:49] evening, police say the scene inside

[1:51] wasn't any better. The parents get what

[1:53] they get, you know? I mean, they the

[1:55] kids deserve better.

[1:56] >> Following a tip, police stopped by and

[1:58] found the children, ages 10, seven, and

[2:00] three, alone, living among feces,

[2:02] garbage, and moldy food. And while their

[2:04] mother and her boyfriend were nowhere to

[2:06] be found, police say they did find two

[2:08] registered sex offenders living behind

[2:10] the house in a trailer.

[2:12] >> They seem pretty quiet.

[2:12] >> Kyle Reese lives two houses down. He

[2:15] tells us he doesn't know the people who

[2:16] live here, but says everything seemed

[2:18] normal from the outside. What I'd seen

[2:20] of them was seemed to be pretty fairly

[2:22] nice people. Uh, kids seemed to be

[2:24] happy. Uh, played out here with their

[2:25] little dog.

[2:26] >> But after finding the children alone in

[2:27] terrible conditions, police arrested

[2:29] their mom, Brandy Craraven, and her

[2:31] boyfriend, Robert Williams, and took the

[2:33] kids into protective custody.

[2:35] >> I'm glad the kids are getting taken care

[2:36] of now. That's what I'm That's my big

[2:38] big point is that kids are getting

[2:40] looked at. And as for the two sex

[2:42] offenders living behind the house,

[2:43] >> this trailer right over here,

[2:45] >> Kenneth Cowry, who lives nearby, tells

[2:47] us he told the children's mom who they

[2:49] were, but says she didn't seem to care.

[2:51] >> I warned them and I showed them

[2:53] paperwork on STAR and they read it and

[2:56] they said, "Well, he hasn't did my

[2:58] children, so I'm not worried."

[3:00] >> Now, the children's mom and her

[3:01] boyfriend now face four counts each of

[3:03] criminal mistreatment. Reporting live in

[3:06] the mobile newsroom tonight, I'm Mark

[3:07] Hanhan, the 10:00 news. Also in Albany,

[3:09] the parents of a toddler were arrested

[3:11] after police say they hung the child

[3:13] upside down from the ceiling with a belt

[3:16] around his ankles. Investigators say it

[3:19] happened at the family's home on 24th

[3:21] Avenue Southeast. Luckily, the

[3:23] 2-year-old boy was not injured. The

[3:25] parents were charged with a misdemeanor,

[3:27] and some neighbors we talked with think

[3:28] they should face stiffer charges.

[3:31] >> Wouldn't even really follow a

[3:32] misdemeanor.

[3:33] >> Mhm. He'd get a job working with little

[3:36] kids at some daycare center with only a

[3:38] misdemeanor. He or she or whoever did

[3:40] it.

[3:41] >> Police say the child was taken into

[3:43] protective custody.

[3:45] >> A Washington woman is facing driving

[3:47] under the influence charges after she

[3:49] was pulled over with her young children

[3:51] in the car. Oregon State Police arrested

[3:53] Amy Peterson in Westland Friday.

[3:55] Troopers say they stopped Peterson

[3:57] following several reports she was

[3:59] driving recklessly. The children, ages

[4:01] four and six, apparently told troopers

[4:02] their mother's driving had scared them.

[4:05] Troopers say Peterson refused to take a

[4:07] breathalyzer test during the stop.

[4:10] Tonight, two people are recovering and

[4:12] another person being questioned, accused

[4:14] of stabbing one of his friends. That

[4:17] stabbing happened just after 5:30 near

[4:19] 7th and Oak in Southeast Portland. And

[4:21] tonight, police think the fight could

[4:23] have been prevented. KPTV's Brent

[4:25] Weisber live at News Control with more

[4:27] on this story. Brent.

[4:28] >> Chad. Portland police say that the two

[4:29] people stabbed will make a full

[4:31] recovery. But tonight, people living in

[4:32] one southeast Portland neighborhood got

[4:34] quite the scare as police searched for a

[4:36] knife wielding man.

[4:38] >> Um, it was just a fist fight, a normal

[4:41] fist fight, you know, between the guys.

[4:44] >> What started off as horse play

[4:47] quickly ended in bloodshed. Within

[4:49] minutes, several Portland police

[4:51] officers swarmed this area looking for a

[4:53] man accused of stabbing at least one

[4:55] person. The lights and sirens drew a lot

[4:58] of attention to this normally quiet

[4:59] neighborhood.

[5:00] >> Pretty surprised this neighborhood

[5:02] hasn't had anything like this happen for

[5:04] since I've been here for 3 years.

[5:05] >> Steven Bush lives just doors from where

[5:07] the suspected stabbing happened.

[5:09] >> I think everyone's pretty surprised.

[5:11] >> It happens every once in a while.

[5:13] Sometimes worse than this.

[5:14] >> Police have detained this man. A witness

[5:16] says the three people involved are all

[5:19] homeless. This woman says the two men

[5:21] got into a fight over where they would

[5:23] be spending the night. She says the

[5:25] alleged stabber started swearing and

[5:27] kicking one man's tent. That's when she

[5:29] says this shirtless man tried breaking

[5:31] up the fight. Police say he suffered

[5:34] only minor injuries. The stabbing victim

[5:36] was taken to a local hospital with

[5:38] non-lifethreatening injuries.

[5:40] >> He's stable. He's he's coherent and he's

[5:43] talking.

[5:43] >> Police say the suspect tried running

[5:45] from them and ended up taking a harsh

[5:47] fall. Eventually, paramedics took him to

[5:50] the hospital.

[5:50] >> They're taking him to the hospital. But

[5:52] for people living in this part of town,

[5:54] this type of violence doesn't sit well.

[5:57] >> I'm out here, too. You know, we need to

[6:00] all just get along and and we all got to

[6:03] be out here anyway. Sometimes it's hard

[6:05] to go to sleep at night, not knowing if

[6:08] you're going to wake up the next

[6:09] morning.

[6:10] >> Portland police will not release the

[6:11] names of the people involved in this

[6:13] fight. They say the person detained

[6:15] could face several assault charges.

[6:17] Reporting live in News Control tonight,

[6:18] Brent Weisberg, the 10:00 news. Tonight,

[6:20] we're learning about a car crash

[6:22] involving Mayor Sam Adams. Portland

[6:24] police say the mayor was in a minor

[6:25] accident in a parking lot in the Jansen

[6:27] Beach area. It happened around 6:00

[6:30] tonight. Cops say the mayor hit one or

[6:32] two cars. No one was hurt and no one was

[6:34] ticketed.

[6:38] Tonight, Fox 12's most wanted is

[6:39] suspected of shooting a man during a

[6:41] fight. Portland police say the suspect

[6:43] shot Enrique Thomas in the parking lot

[6:45] of an apartment complex on Northeast

[6:47] 81st Avenue near Sandy Boulevard late

[6:50] last night. Paramedics took Thomas to

[6:52] the hospital, but authorities haven't

[6:53] released his condition. If you have any

[6:56] information that could help

[6:56] investigators, call Portland police.

[6:59] >> Well, tonight, a Multa County inmate is

[7:01] facing new charges after authorities say

[7:03] he attacked a deputy. The Multma County

[7:06] Sheriff's Office says Larry Lund

[7:07] assaulted a deputy over a phone call.

[7:10] They say he grabbed Deputy Don Hathaway

[7:13] by the hair and hit her in the face and

[7:15] head several times. Hathaway was treated

[7:17] and released. Land now faces harassment

[7:20] and assaultment assault charges.

[7:21] Tonight, firefighters in Lake Owiggo are

[7:24] trying to figure out what caused a house

[7:25] fire. It's located on Country Club Road

[7:28] near Iron Mountain Boulevard. There was

[7:30] heavy black smoke coming from the house

[7:32] and fire crews say people were

[7:33] evacuating from the house. While the

[7:35] cause of the investigation is still

[7:37] going on, we do know fire crews rescued

[7:39] a dog and no one is injured from the

[7:41] fire.

[7:46] >> Well, tonight there are three confirmed

[7:48] cases of the H1 to N1 flu virus in

[7:51] Oregon and one victim remains in

[7:53] intensive care. Oregon public health

[7:55] officials say two of the confirmed cases

[7:57] are in Multma County. The third is a

[7:59] student at Western Oregon University.

[8:01] Now, there are 19 other probable cases

[8:04] of the virus in the state. Doctors

[8:06] expect all of those affected to fully

[8:09] recover from the flu virus. Now, the

[8:11] list of schools closed due to the flu

[8:13] outbreak is growing tonight. All schools

[8:16] in the Forest Grove School District will

[8:18] be closed tomorrow and Tuesday. One

[8:21] probable case of the flu has been

[8:22] reported at Cornelius Elementary School

[8:24] and that school will stay closed all

[8:26] week. It's understandable because

[8:29] parents don't want their kids to get

[8:30] sick and I think it's just parents kind

[8:32] of, you know, being overly cautious and

[8:36] because they don't want their kid to get

[8:37] it. Also closed tomorrow, the Central

[8:40] School District in Pulk County, Western

[8:42] Oregon University also closed.

[8:44] Administrators are discussing extending

[8:46] the school's closure since there was a

[8:48] confirmed case now on campus. We're

[8:50] learning details that a flight landed

[8:52] tonight at Portland International

[8:54] Airport with a passenger on board who

[8:56] had flu-l like symptoms. We spoke with a

[8:58] US Airways spokesman who confirms that

[9:00] flight 92 coming in from Phoenix did

[9:03] have a person taken to the hospital in

[9:05] case they test positive for H1N1

[9:08] influenza A. The number of confirmed

[9:10] cases around the US has jumped to 245 in

[9:13] 35 states tonight. However, health

[9:16] authorities say the number grew largely

[9:18] because labs are catching up on a

[9:20] backlog of tests. A CDC spokeswoman says

[9:24] they do consider the virus as

[9:25] widespread. That means not everyone is

[9:28] infected, but the virus has arrived in

[9:30] most communities. Right now, the biggest

[9:32] concern involving the H1N1 virus is if

[9:36] it will return stronger during the

[9:38] normal flu season.

[9:40] >> Now, Portland's first weather at 10.

[9:43] Hope you enjoyed those drier, calmer

[9:45] conditions today. Here's a look at the

[9:46] live radar picture. You can see we just

[9:48] have a few lingering sprinkles after

[9:50] some isolated thunderstorms did move

[9:52] through the area. Portland is dry right

[9:55] now. Uh just a lingering shower to our

[9:58] north and east up in the St. Helens area

[10:00] and even that is fizzling out. Let's

[10:02] show you our rainfall totals for today.

[10:04] Really nothing compared to what we had

[10:05] yesterday with those heavy downpours.

[10:07] Just 300s of an inch of rain out at the

[10:10] Portland airport. a trace in Hillsboro

[10:12] and a trace in McMinnville. The winds

[10:15] today much calmer. Our peak gust just 20

[10:17] mph after a peak gust yesterday of 41

[10:20] miles hour. Right now the winds

[10:22] generally calm or at less than 10 mph.

[10:25] We have sustained winds at 6 mph. We do

[10:28] have some very windy conditions headed

[10:30] for the coast. There is a high wind

[10:32] watch there tomorrow with gusts of up to

[10:34] 65 miles hour. I'll have all the details

[10:36] on this plus your first live local 7-day

[10:38] forecast coming up in just a bit. All

[10:41] right, Stephanie, thank you. We now know

[10:42] the name of a man killed during

[10:44] yesterday's storm. 59year-old David Katy

[10:47] was driving on Capitol Highway just west

[10:50] of Barbara Boulevard about 4:45

[10:52] yesterday afternoon. Investigators from

[10:54] Portland's major crash team believe the

[10:56] high winds and rain sent the tree

[10:58] crashing onto his car. The lights are

[11:00] back on for PGE customers tonight. Only

[11:03] about 200 customers are still in the

[11:05] dark and crews are working to restore

[11:07] the power right now. Yesterday's brief

[11:09] storms knocked out power to more than

[11:11] 30,000 customers.

[11:13] >> The Coast Guard came to the rescue of a

[11:15] surfer off the coast of Cape Kanda

[11:17] today. Someone walking along the beach

[11:19] called for help after they noticed the

[11:21] surfer struggling in the water. The crew

[11:23] of a Coast Guard helicopter spotted the

[11:25] 17-year-old in the water. A rescue

[11:28] swimmer helped hoisted the teen from the

[11:30] water. The teen was treated for mild

[11:33] hypothermia.

[11:35] >> The 10:00 news is just getting started.

[11:38] A prom night arrest, but it wasn't a

[11:40] student hauled off to jail. Find out

[11:42] what tipped off police to the

[11:43] intoxicated limo driver.

[11:46] >> A unique problem popping up on Indian

[11:48] reservations. Bootlegging.

[11:50] >> You name it, they'll buy it.

[11:52] >> Why cracking down on alcohol could help

[11:54] end a rise in violence.

[11:56] >> Two deadly fires break out overseas. Why

[11:59] the simple lessons you teach your kids

[12:01] could have prevented the blazes and

[12:03] saved lives. The mayor of Eugene made a

[12:06] surprise appearance at a medical

[12:08] marijuana rally. What she has to say

[12:10] about the legalization of the drugs.

[12:13] >> We have more showers showing up in the

[12:15] forecast. I'll have the details.

[12:18] >> You're watching the 10:00 news. First,

[12:20] live local.

[13:36] Mirax.

[13:38] >> A wakeup call for one parent after she

[13:40] says an airline attendant gave her

[13:41] 8-year-old a massive cup of coffee and

[13:44] her one big headache. That's coming up

[14:24] What would I do without you?

[14:29] What would I do?

[14:34] Without you,

[14:39] >> you and your Kaiser Permanente team,

[14:42] together you rock.

[14:47] Fox Monday. Only two episodes left of

[14:50] the most powerful season of House.

[14:52] >> You want to kiss me, don't you?

[14:54] >> I always want to kiss you.

[14:55] >> All new House, then in a day marked by

[14:57] betrayal.

[14:58] >> We need to put an end to this.

[15:00] >> The biggest twist is yet to come. All

[15:03] new 24 after House, Monday at 8 on Fox

[15:05] 12 Oregon.

[15:10] What started as a shoplifting

[15:12] misdemeanor at the Fred Meyer in

[15:13] Battleground turned into an alleged

[15:15] strongarm robbery. It happened last

[15:18] night just before 7. And Battleground

[15:20] police say the original complaint was a

[15:22] man accused of shoplifting $25 worth of

[15:25] stuff. But police say the suspect hit

[15:27] the guard and took off. They used a

[15:29] canine to try and track the man down and

[15:31] found him hiding in a nearby yard.

[15:34] Paramedics took a bicyclist to the

[15:36] hospital after he was seriously hurt on

[15:38] SR14. The Vancouver Fire Department says

[15:40] the man is in serious condition with arm

[15:43] and head injuries. It happened around

[15:45] noon today on SR14 near I 205 at exit 6.

[15:49] Fire crews say four bikers were riding

[15:51] together and one got hurt. It's unclear

[15:54] how the accident happened at this time.

[15:56] The investigation is underway. Two

[15:58] officers who died in last year's

[16:00] Woodburn Bank bomb blasts will be

[16:02] honored in Salem and the nation's

[16:03] capital. Senior trooper William Hikim

[16:05] and Woodburn Police Captain Tom Tenant

[16:08] will be added to the National Memorial

[16:10] Wall in Washington DC. Here in Oregon,

[16:13] their names will be added to Oregon's

[16:14] memorial wall in Salem. Both men died

[16:17] when a bomb went off at a West Coast

[16:19] bank in Woodburn.

[16:23] Well, fire season 2009 might be one of

[16:25] the worst we've seen in a while. We have

[16:28] some video from last year's Oregon

[16:30] fires. Now, researchers say a

[16:32] combination of hot, dry weather in the

[16:34] summer, coupled with potential lightning

[16:36] storms in southwest Oregon means they

[16:38] are thinking the summer wildlife and

[16:40] wildfire season in Oregon will be worse

[16:42] than last year's. On top of that, people

[16:45] worry that a beetle infestation in the

[16:47] Cascades could leave many areas with

[16:49] dead trees. is of course big fuel for

[16:52] those wildfires.

[16:55] >> And news from around the Northwest

[16:56] tonight. Eugene's mayor surprised a lot

[16:59] of people saying she supports legalizing

[17:01] medical marijuana. Mayor Kitty Piery

[17:03] appeared at a rally in Eugene yesterday.

[17:06] She read a proclamation declaring April

[17:08] 30th through May 6th as medical

[17:11] marijuana awareness week. Many people

[17:13] were on hand in support of marijuana's

[17:15] medical benefits. I get such bad

[17:18] migraines that I'm just literally

[17:19] wrapped around the toilet barfing my

[17:21] guts up and you know there's no medicine

[17:23] that helps with that.

[17:25] >> Piery says she's not giving an opinion

[17:27] on marijuana, only her support for its

[17:30] legal use as part of medical treatment.

[17:32] The rally was just one of more than 200

[17:34] planned in cities around the world for

[17:36] the global marijuana march. Well, a

[17:38] flight attendant for Northwest Airlines

[17:40] is in hot water after she allegedly told

[17:42] a little girl to buy coffee, who then in

[17:45] turn got sick. Now, this little

[17:47] 8-year-old flies to Kentucky a half

[17:48] dozen times a year to visit her father.

[17:51] Earlier this month, she was flying

[17:53] Northwest Airlines from Louisville to

[17:54] Seattle using its unaccompanied minor

[17:57] program. At a layover in Detroit, her

[17:59] mother says the Northwest supervisor

[18:01] took her daughter to Starbucks.

[18:04] I told her that I was tired and then she

[18:07] took me to Starbucks and she said,

[18:09] "Here, go order a large coffee."

[18:12] >> Now, the 8-year-old vomited twice into a

[18:14] courtesy bag and there was a

[18:15] pediatrician on board who ultimately

[18:17] helped her. Northwest Airlines says they

[18:19] are now investigating the case.

[18:22] >> Tomorrow, Oregon legislators will debate

[18:24] a bill that, if passed, would keep the

[18:26] names of concealed handgun owners

[18:29] private. Both Republicans and Democrats

[18:31] say privacy is a right and in this case

[18:33] a matter of safety. KPTV's Marilyn

[18:36] Deutsch reports tonight from the Fox 12

[18:38] newsroom.

[18:39] After a teacher in Medford wanted to

[18:41] bring her concealed handgun to class,

[18:44] some in the local media started asking

[18:46] who else in the county is carrying a

[18:48] concealed weapon.

[18:50] The proposed law would make sure those

[18:52] names are not made public in southern

[18:54] Oregon or anywhere else in the state. At

[18:57] the place to shoot, gun enthusiasts take

[18:59] target practice. While some worry they

[19:01] could become targets of criminals and

[19:03] others if their names become public.

[19:05] >> Names can be matched up with addresses

[19:09] and this sort of thing.

[19:10] >> Identity theft would be a concern.

[19:12] >> Like employers, are they going to be

[19:13] pinpointing people that are applying for

[19:15] jobs because they're on this list.

[19:16] >> And they want to know why their right to

[19:18] privacy should be threatened by the

[19:20] state's public records laws. if there

[19:22] was an anti-gun nut that wanted to look

[19:24] up these people and steal from them. If

[19:26] somebody knows I have a weapon, they

[19:27] come in my house and steal my firearm.

[19:29] >> Though some gun advocates question that

[19:31] possibility,

[19:32] >> I'm not going to seek out this homeowner

[19:34] because it's going to be a good

[19:35] gunfight.

[19:36] >> Local sheriffs already put concealed

[19:38] weapons holders through extensive

[19:40] background checks. And these gun owners

[19:42] are required to take firearms training.

[19:44] So, police already know who owns these

[19:46] weapons. The question is, should you

[19:48] know? Those who think the name should

[19:51] become public, say, for example, a woman

[19:53] should be able to find out if her

[19:55] stalker owns a gun. The proposed law

[19:58] does allow for you to find out if you

[20:00] can provide clear and convincing

[20:02] evidence that it's in the public's

[20:04] interest to know.

[20:05] >> However, the gun owner can also be told

[20:08] who's asking. In the Fox 12 newsroom,

[20:10] Marilyn Deutsch, the 10:00 news.

[23:47] >> Turning to the economic crisis tonight.

[23:49] Cityroup may have to generate 10 billion

[23:51] dollar in new revenue. That's according

[23:53] to the Wall Street Journal. Paper says

[23:55] the need for cash stems from the Fed's

[23:57] stress test for big banks. Those results

[24:00] will be released to the public on

[24:01] Thursday. The bank disputes the results

[24:03] and if the Federal Reserve agrees, they

[24:05] won't have to raise as much money.

[24:08] Billionaire Warren Buffett says most of

[24:10] the nation's banks are not too big to

[24:12] fail. The investor says he's not sure

[24:14] how the government will handle the

[24:16] situation when the results of the bank

[24:17] stress tests are released. However, he

[24:20] says the government should not rule out

[24:21] the failure of most banks. Buffett says

[24:24] all but the four largest banks could be

[24:26] sold off. Talked about the stress test

[24:28] today at a press conference during

[24:30] Birkshshire Hathway's annual meeting in

[24:32] Nebraska.

[24:33] >> With customers holding on to their money

[24:35] tightly, restaurants around the nation

[24:37] are getting hurt. In 2008, chef salaries

[24:40] dropped for the first time in four

[24:42] years, according to starchef.com's

[24:44] annual salary survey. And pastry chefs,

[24:47] they're really feeling the pinch. On

[24:48] average, their pay has dropped 13% this

[24:51] year, and there's still a significant

[24:53] separation between men and women. The

[24:54] website says men that are chefs can

[24:56] expect to make about 18% more. Stores

[25:00] around the world are looking to find new

[25:02] customers with sales dragging. And in

[25:04] London, they're trying so-called pop-up

[25:07] shops. These temporary locations allow

[25:09] shoppers to test new products and help

[25:11] move excess stock. One store owner says

[25:13] pop-ups are here to stay.

[25:16] It's part of theater and um a retailer

[25:18] cannot be static today. You can't just

[25:20] stand in your shop, wait behind the

[25:22] counter for people to come by. You have

[25:24] to go out and meet the people. And this

[25:26] is just another way of meeting the

[25:28] people.

[25:30] >> Store owners say London landlords are

[25:32] more willing to agree to short-term

[25:34] leases, and sales have been so good at

[25:36] one London pop-up shop that it's now

[25:38] being kept open for good.

[29:34] In tonight's Healthw Watch, experts say

[29:36] committing to some form of regular

[29:38] exercise is the best way to control body

[29:41] weight and of course stay healthy. But

[29:42] let's face it, getting started and

[29:44] staying committed can be a bit tough.

[29:46] KPTV's Deborah Gil has the advice from

[29:48] fitness specialtist specialists rather

[29:51] that tell us it's actually easier than

[29:53] we may think.

[29:55] >> With spring comes warmer temperatures

[29:57] and usually draws people outside after a

[29:59] long sedate winter. AJ Kinarath, a

[30:02] fitness specialist for Providence Health

[30:03] and Services says you can get started

[30:05] anytime and anywhere.

[30:07] >> Fitness doesn't have to be in a gym. It

[30:09] could be anywhere. It could be at home

[30:12] and it doesn't have to involve huge

[30:15] expensive equipment. Um, it's just a

[30:17] daily

[30:19] thing that you can do um in your life

[30:21] just to stay active.

[30:23] >> AJ says people may start strong but

[30:25] usually drop off in 2 to 4 weeks blaming

[30:27] family, weather, and not really knowing

[30:29] what to do. He says you can start by

[30:31] simply walking indoors and outside. Then

[30:34] increase your steps and take the family

[30:36] with you.

[30:36] >> There's no excuse not to walk. That's

[30:39] the most basic primitive exercise that

[30:41] you can do. And people still would

[30:44] rather drive and park in the front spot

[30:47] than walk that extra step.

[30:48] >> We're fortunate here in the Northwest to

[30:50] have so much access to great wooded

[30:52] trails and they're free. AJ says if you

[30:55] can walk up and down hills and increase

[30:57] your pace, even better. Then add some

[30:59] exercises to your hike like simple

[31:01] squats. And if you need balance, you can

[31:03] use a tree or a park bench, um, a table.

[31:08] And all you got to do is squat down and

[31:11] up, making sure that, you know, your

[31:13] your knees are in alignment, um, and

[31:16] your hips are underneath you.

[31:19] Very easy. You don't need weight. It's

[31:21] all your body weight.

[31:22] >> The walking and squats will give you a

[31:24] really good leg workout. to charge up

[31:27] your upper half. AJ says throw in some

[31:29] push-ups against a tree or park bench.

[31:32] And then add some lunges. They'll

[31:33] strengthen your legs, hips, and ankles

[31:35] along with your balance. Then stay

[31:38] motivated,

[31:39] >> whether it's working out with a partner

[31:41] or holding yourself accountable by

[31:43] writing in a in a log book or journal.

[31:46] Um, finding different different ways to

[31:49] keep you outside or keep you moving. And

[31:53] AJ says that movement can help keep away

[31:56] a lot of problems as we age. In

[31:58] Portland, Deborah Gil, the 10:00 news.

[32:01] >> And fitness specialists say if you want

[32:03] to stop any exercise that you should do

[32:05] so when you feel pain or burning

[32:07] sensations in your muscles, they say it

[32:09] doesn't need to be painful to do you

[32:11] good.

[32:12] >> Washington smokers are looking for ways

[32:13] to quit after the biggest federal

[32:15] cigarette tax increase in history. On

[32:17] April 1st, a tax hike of 62 cents a pack

[32:20] went into effect. Analysts expect the

[32:22] higher prices to lead to more than a 6%

[32:25] decrease in smoking. That translates

[32:28] into an estimated $20.9 million loss in

[32:31] state tax revenue. Managers of the state

[32:34] sponsored tobacco quit line say calls

[32:37] are running 243% higher in April than a

[32:40] year ago.

[32:44] >> And Stephanie Crawage is here for a look

[32:46] at that forecast. I think today a little

[32:48] bit better than at least yesterday, but

[32:50] will it continue?

[32:52] >> Uh, actually no, we are going to see

[32:54] another round of wet weather. We won't

[32:56] see the severe weather like we had

[32:57] yesterday when we had those heavy

[32:58] downpours, the really strong wind gusts.

[33:01] As you can see, things are fairly calm

[33:02] out there, especially compared to

[33:04] yesterday. Here's a live look through

[33:06] our Wamtt River sky cam. A little bit of

[33:08] a breeze, but for the most part, our

[33:09] winds are at less than 10 miles per

[33:11] hour. Quick little look at our radar

[33:13] picture shows some lingering showers to

[33:15] the east of Portland, but things are

[33:17] drying out for tonight. And we're

[33:18] actually going to start off our day

[33:20] tomorrow on the dry side. But as the day

[33:22] progresses, we'll see the clouds kind of

[33:24] thicken up and then the rain will move

[33:26] into the area. But as you can see, just

[33:28] a few lingering showers. We had some

[33:29] more earlier kind of hung up over the

[33:32] Cascades. Now, a quick look at a new

[33:34] feature here at Fox 12, the Chinook

[33:36] Winds Beach Cam. This is a time lapse

[33:38] from earlier today. You can see we had

[33:40] plenty of blue sky early on in the day,

[33:42] but then the clouds kind of moved in and

[33:44] thickened up and we saw the cloudy

[33:46] conditions here in the Wamtt Valley as

[33:47] well. The coast tomorrow is going to be

[33:49] a very active place. There's a high wind

[33:52] watch in effect there for tomorrow

[33:54] afternoon and evening. More on that in

[33:55] just a moment. Right now, our high

[33:57] temperatures for today 63 in Portland,

[33:59] 61 in Salem. We made it to 67 in the

[34:02] Dallas, 57 for Pendleton, and 57 for

[34:05] Lrand. Temperatures currently in the

[34:07] mid50s. We are going to drop into the

[34:10] mid to upper 40s overnight in the Wamut

[34:12] Valley. So well above freezing.

[34:15] Temperatures in the lower 50s right now

[34:16] out along the coast. And in Eastern

[34:18] Oregon, we are seeing chillier

[34:20] conditions in the mid30s around Baker

[34:22] City. Now, as we take a look at the

[34:24] satellite picture, this is the big story

[34:26] for tomorrow. A system that is packing

[34:28] just a lot of moisture with this. We're

[34:30] going to see some heavy rain, especially

[34:32] to the south of the Portland metro area.

[34:34] This system is just uh carrying a lot of

[34:37] rain with it. And we are going to see

[34:38] some very wet conditions not only

[34:41] tomorrow in the later afternoon hours,

[34:42] but also into the overnight hours. With

[34:45] this, we'll see some very strong wind

[34:46] gusts up and down the Oregon coast. We

[34:48] could see gusts of up to 65 miles per

[34:51] hour there. So there is a high wind

[34:53] watch for the Oregon coast and the

[34:54] southwest Washington coast as well. The

[34:57] forecast east of the Cascades, upper 50s

[34:59] for Lrand, Madress 61, 54 in Bend. We're

[35:03] expecting mid50s around the Primeville

[35:05] area with breezy conditions. Gorge winds

[35:08] between 20 and 30 miles per hour. As we

[35:10] head up to the Cascades, not bad travel

[35:13] conditions. We'll be seeing wet passes.

[35:16] Snow levels will be above 5,000 ft. And

[35:18] those showers probably won't arrive

[35:20] until later in the day. So, a dry start

[35:23] up in the Cascades. And it looks like

[35:24] we'll have a dry start in the Wamut

[35:26] Valley, but that dry weather will not

[35:28] last long. Expect the rain to move in by

[35:30] the afternoon or evening hours here in

[35:32] the valley. of course, a little bit

[35:34] earlier out along the coast, but the

[35:35] coast will be seeing the winds as their

[35:38] big weather story for tomorrow. Wind

[35:40] gusts are possible at the beaches of up

[35:43] to 65 miles per hour and the coastal

[35:45] communities up to 55 miles per hour. So,

[35:48] there is that potential for some

[35:49] damaging winds there. Just breezy

[35:51] conditions up and down the Wamtt Valley.

[35:53] As you get out toward the gorge, we will

[35:55] see some gustier conditions, but uh

[35:57] plenty of wet weather headed for the

[35:59] Portland metro area tomorrow. Increasing

[36:01] rain and wind as the day progresses.

[36:03] We'll see gustier conditions in the

[36:05] afternoon and evening. Possible winds of

[36:08] up to 30 miles per hour. Heading to the

[36:10] east side of town. It's going to be a

[36:12] wet afternoon and evening. First part of

[36:14] the day though, not looking too bad.

[36:16] Those winds picking up out toward the

[36:18] gorge up to 30 m hour. So, we start

[36:21] things off dry, mostly cloudy. The rain

[36:23] moves in for the either later afternoon

[36:25] or early evening hours and kind of

[36:27] sticks with us through the overnight

[36:29] hours. We continue to see showers on

[36:31] Tuesday. Wednesday looking even wetter

[36:33] than Tuesday. And then things do dry out

[36:36] nicely for Thursday and Friday. And just

[36:38] a small chance of rain for Saturday and

[36:41] Sunday. You can get weather anytime on

[36:42] our website at kptv.com. And Annie

[36:45] Carson will have your forecast tomorrow

[40:58] Stand by the final cut in three, two,

[41:00] one. Q. The final cut begins with news

[41:02] across America tonight and a tour bus

[41:04] crash in Southern California with dozens

[41:07] hurt. Police say the bus hit a median

[41:09] and then smashed through a wall before

[41:11] coming to rest in someone's backyard.

[41:13] The bus was traveling north from San

[41:15] Diego to Coloulton on Interstate 215.

[41:18] Investigators say no children were on

[41:20] board, but all the passengers, including

[41:22] the driver, suffered injuries. The

[41:24] accident is under investigation.

[41:27] South Carolina police are searching for

[41:29] a 17-year-old New York girl last seen

[41:31] near Myrtle Beach. Investigators are

[41:34] looking where they last got a signal

[41:36] from the teenager's cell phone. Brittany

[41:38] Drexel was last seen with a group of

[41:40] friends who traveled to South Carolina

[41:42] from Rochester, New York. Police have

[41:44] used dogs, helicopters, boats, and

[41:46] searching on foot, but haven't found any

[41:48] signs of the teen. A Dallas Cowboys

[41:51] scouting assistant sustained permanent

[41:53] paralysis after a tent-like practice

[41:55] facility collapsed. It happened

[41:58] yesterday when a powerful storm moved

[42:00] through the area. Team authorities say

[42:02] Rich Bame is in stable condition after

[42:04] today's surgery. He was just one among a

[42:06] dozen people hurt yesterday. Two other

[42:09] Cowboy staffers remain in the hospital.

[42:11] The special teams coach also broke his

[42:13] back, but without paralysis. Cowboys

[42:16] owner Jerry Jones surveyed the damage

[42:18] today after spending most of the night

[42:20] at the hospital. A wall gave way at a

[42:23] bowling alley in Iowa, causing dozens to

[42:26] scramble for safety. Investigators say

[42:28] everyone though was able to get out

[42:30] safely. Fire crews actually knocked down

[42:33] other parts of the bowling alley, trying

[42:34] to stabilize what's left of the

[42:36] structure. Fire investigators say they

[42:38] aren't sure what caused the wall to give

[42:39] way, but a local TV station says the

[42:42] collapse was caused by an expanding

[42:44] sinkhole.

[42:45] Alcoholism, a sadly common problem on

[42:48] the Navajo Indian Reservation in the

[42:50] American Southwest. It seems clear that

[42:52] the alcoholism is related to the

[42:54] reservation's ban on liquor, which

[42:57] apparently causes bootlegging. For KPTV

[42:59] tonight, Caseysteagle has more on the

[43:02] growing problem.

[43:07] The Navajo Nation is a 17 million acre

[43:10] Native American reservation that spans

[43:12] parts of Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah.

[43:15] Federal authorities say in recent years

[43:17] they've seen a unique problem popping up

[43:19] on the land.

[43:20] >> Folks go into neighboring towns and they

[43:24] purchase large quantities of alcohol. Uh

[43:27] you name it, they'll buy it. uh beer,

[43:31] hard liquor,

[43:33] take it into uh Indian country, sell it

[43:36] out of their houses.

[43:37] >> Selling or even consuming booze on the

[43:39] reservation is illegal under tribal law.

[43:42] But the feds say this is about more than

[43:44] just bootlegging.

[43:45] >> Homicides, child sex abuse, domestic

[43:49] violence, serious assaults. 99% of those

[43:52] cases have some element of the use of

[43:56] alcohol or illegal substance. In an

[43:58] effort to curtail crime in general,

[43:59] tribal law enforcement began conducting

[44:02] bootlegging busts. This is undercover

[44:04] video from the Navajo Police Department.

[44:06] It clearly shows officers slipping cash

[44:09] to the suspects and getting beer or

[44:11] liquor in return.

[44:12] >> Eventually, you're going to have a

[44:14] decrease in your disorderly conduct

[44:17] calls, your public intoxication calls.

[44:19] You know, that's going to go down. So,

[44:22] you know, that's that's what we're

[44:23] looking at. You know, that's the bigger

[44:24] picture. Tribal leaders say this is also

[44:26] the sign of a larger problem. Alcoholism

[44:29] rates are extremely high among the

[44:31] Native American population. The Centers

[44:33] for Disease Control says 12% of Indian

[44:36] deaths are attributed to alcohol. That

[44:39] is more than three times that of the

[44:41] general population.

[44:42] >> I don't think there's really any

[44:45] treatment programs uh on the

[44:47] reservation. There's no really there's

[44:48] really no treatment facilities.

[44:50] >> About 40 bootleggers have been arrested

[44:52] so far. A firsttime offense means

[44:54] probation and an outside rehab program.

[44:57] A second offense could land a person

[44:59] behind bars. At the US Attorney's Office

[45:02] in Flagstaff, Arizona, Caseysteagle, Fox

[45:05] News.

[45:06] >> A Boston limo driver was hired to keep

[45:08] high schoolers safe on their prom night,

[45:10] but cops arrested him, saying he was

[45:12] driving while drunk. Two girls refused

[45:15] to get into the limo because they

[45:16] thought the driver was drunk and one of

[45:19] the girls called her parents who quickly

[45:21] called the cops. The driver left when

[45:23] the girls refused to get in, but then he

[45:25] returned several minutes later trying to

[45:28] convince the students to get in. That's

[45:30] when police arrived. A manager at the

[45:32] limo service is thankful for the kid's

[45:34] decision.

[45:37] The news from around the world tonight.

[45:38] Two separate gas fires killed at least

[45:41] nine people in Russia. Authorities say

[45:44] eight were killed when flames engulfed

[45:45] an apartment building in Siberia today.

[45:48] Several others were hurt when a

[45:49] neighbor's gas can sparked the blaze. In

[45:52] St. Petersburg, another person died when

[45:54] a fire broke out in a market. Fire

[45:56] authorities say that fire was also

[45:58] triggered by a gas can. Experts say fire

[46:01] safety is fairly poor in Russia and most

[46:04] people don't even know the basic fire

[46:06] safety rules.

[46:11] Tonight, the H1N1 influenza A outbreak

[46:14] has more than 1,000 cases confirmed

[46:17] worldwide. The World Health Organization

[46:20] says there are more than 1,000 cases in

[46:22] a total of 18 countries. Mexican health

[46:24] officials reported 568 cases and 22

[46:29] deaths linked to the flu. And tonight,

[46:31] Mexican authorities have sent a plane to

[46:33] China to pick up people trapped by flu

[46:36] flu quarantine. With H1N1 becoming a

[46:39] worldwide outbreak, a Catholic church in

[46:41] New Zealand is changing up how they give

[46:43] communion. It will temporarily give

[46:45] churchgoers communion wafers in their

[46:48] hand rather than placing it on their

[46:50] tongues. The church has also suspended

[46:52] drinking from the communion wine

[46:53] chalice. Some members were happy the

[46:55] church was taking the outbreak

[46:57] seriously, while others thought the

[46:58] changes were unnecessary.

[47:06] And church members say they won't be

[47:08] doing this for long though, the church

[47:10] plans to resume normal communion

[47:11] practices next Sunday.

[47:14] >> Well, as more schools around the

[47:15] Northwest and the nation cancel classes

[47:18] due to the flu outbreak, experts have

[47:20] some helpful tips on how you can talk to

[47:22] your kids about the outbreak. First off,

[47:24] they say it is normal to worry about a

[47:26] possible pandemic. Also, if your child

[47:29] is sick, take it seriously, especially

[47:31] if they have flu-l like symptoms, but

[47:33] don't necessarily freak out. They say

[47:35] the US is wellprepared to handle the

[47:38] illness. They say don't take your child

[47:40] to the hospital without talking and

[47:42] taking your child to the family doctor

[47:44] first. You don't want to expose them to

[47:46] sick people unless you really have to.

[47:47] And finally, they say now is a good time

[47:49] to stock up on some staples so you won't

[47:51] have to go shopping when your child or

[47:53] if your child does get sick. If you'd

[47:55] like some more information about the flu

[47:57] outbreak, all you have to do is log over

[47:59] onto our website, kptv.com.

[48:03] Well, the final cut goes local now and a

[48:05] night at a Beaverton karaoke restaurant

[48:07] hit a sour note when a brawl broke out.

[48:10] Authorities arrested five people at the

[48:11] Aztec restaurant on southwest Beaverton

[48:14] Hillsdale Highway early this morning.

[48:16] KPTV's Brent Weissber live at News

[48:18] Control with more on what led up to the

[48:20] fight. Brent,

[48:20] >> Chad, Washington County deputies say the

[48:22] fight all started after a man slapped a

[48:24] woman on the butt as she sang karaoke.

[48:26] Her husband took offense and confronted

[48:28] the man. And that's when deputies say

[48:30] beer bottles and punches started flying.

[48:33] Deputies arrested five people and it

[48:35] took more than a half dozen deputies and

[48:37] police officers from Beaverton to

[48:39] control the brawl. Deputies say the

[48:41] fight broke out and more than 100 people

[48:43] inside the bar started pushing their way

[48:45] towards the exit. Eventually things got

[48:48] so out of hand, security guards ended up

[48:50] using pepper spray on the crowds.

[48:52] Restaurant goers say they're surprised

[48:54] to hear about the fight.

[48:56] think that something like that would

[48:57] happen here is kind of bizarre. I mean,

[48:59] it doesn't seem like that's that type of

[49:01] atmosphere or or uh clientele that would

[49:04] come to something like this. It must

[49:06] have been pretty pretty outrageous.

[49:08] >> In all, seven people are now facing

[49:10] charges ranging from harassment,

[49:12] assault, and rioting. Deputies say that

[49:14] the two people injured in the case are

[49:16] now out of the hospital. The store's

[49:18] manager says that this is the first time

[49:20] something like this has happened.

[49:22] Reporting live tonight in News, Brent

[49:24] Weisber, the 10:00 news.

[49:28] A former American Idol winner is

[49:30] mourning the loss of his brother

[49:31] tonight. David Cook's brother passed

[49:33] away after an 11-year battle with brain

[49:36] cancer, which then spread to his spine.

[49:39] David says he originally only went to

[49:41] idol triyouts to support his brother

[49:43] Adam, who had talked to him about

[49:45] auditioning.

[49:49] Hollywood is buzzing as the X-Men slash

[49:51] their way back to the top of the box

[49:53] office. The comic book flick X-Men

[49:56] Origins: Wolverine debuted with $87

[49:58] million in ticket sales in North America

[50:01] and a worldwide total of $160 million.

[50:05] Now, that's more than the entire movie

[50:07] cost to make. Coming in a distant

[50:09] second, Ghosts of Girlfriend's Past. The

[50:12] romantic comedy brought in a little more

[50:14] than $15 million for its opening

[50:16] weekend. Rounding out the top three,

[50:18] last weekend's number one, Obsessed. The

[50:21] thriller hauled in 12.2 2 million at

[54:14] Well, to Living Green tonight,

[54:15] scientists say they have a way to save

[54:28] overwhelming the Everglades, and

[54:29] scientists say the insects they want to
