[0:01] This is Night
[0:02] Line substituting for Ted Copel and
[0:05] reporting from Washington, Chris Bury.
[0:08] It is always uncomfortable for
[0:10] journalists to report on their own
[0:12] organizations. And tonight, it is also
[0:15] unfortunate. A few hours ago, we learned
[0:17] that the young child of an employee at
[0:19] ABC News in New York contracted a form
[0:22] of anthrax after visiting the office
[0:24] with his mother. Luckily, it is the skin
[0:27] type of exposure known as cutaneous
[0:30] anthrax and the prognosis is excellent.
[0:34] But it has been another day of high
[0:37] anxiety. Earlier, the anthrax scare
[0:40] reached the highest levels of Congress.
[0:42] Powder spilled from an envelope mailed
[0:44] to the Washington office of Senate
[0:46] Majority Leader Tom Dashel. The
[0:49] preliminary test came back positive for
[0:52] anthrax. At this point, public concern
[0:55] appears measured. An ABC News poll out
[0:58] tonight shows only 26% of Americans say
[1:01] the possibility of an anthrax attack
[1:04] worries them a great deal. And a vast
[1:06] majority say they are satisfied with how
[1:09] the government has handled the anthrax
[1:12] situation. On the warfront, American
[1:15] planes launched their heaviest raids
[1:17] yet, pounding targets near Kbble and
[1:20] Kandahar. The message may be sinking in.
[1:24] Tuesday's New York Times reports on
[1:26] secret overtures for moderates in the
[1:28] Taliban regime. The newspaper quotes
[1:30] officials in Pakistan as saying
[1:33] moderates would try to negotiate the
[1:35] handover of Osama bin Laden if the
[1:37] United States stopped bombing for two or
[1:39] three days. We'll have more from the
[1:42] military and diplomatic fronts later in
[1:44] the program. But
