[0:04] >> This is the CBS Evening News, Dan Rather
[0:07] reporting. Good [music] evening. What
[0:08] could be double trouble and a double bad
[0:11] day for George Bush? From the first,
[0:13] Bush has been ducking and dodging about
[0:14] exactly what his involvement was in the
[0:16] deal that sent missiles to the
[0:18] Ayatollah. Opponents insist Bush has
[0:20] told at least four different stories
[0:22] about it. More recently, he has just
[0:25] refused to answer questions, including
[0:26] avoiding major interviews. Today, it
[0:28] came back to haunt him again. The
[0:30] Washington Post reported new indications
[0:32] that Bush may have been much more
[0:34] involved than he's been letting on.
[0:36] And then there are the polls. The latest
[0:38] CBS News New York Times poll out tonight
[0:40] has Bush trailing Senator Bob Dole in
[0:42] Iowa. It also shows Gary Hart with a big
[0:45] lead among Democrats there.
[0:47] Eric Engberg has the latest campaign '88
[0:49] twists on who's hot and who's not.
[0:54] Iowans in the midst of the biggest chill
[0:56] in years are helping Gary Hart reheat
[0:59] his presidential campaign. According to
[1:01] a recent CBS News New York Times poll,
[1:04] Hart is now the front-runner in Iowa
[1:06] with 25%.
[1:08] Paul Simon, whose home state Illinois is
[1:10] right next door, finishes second with
[1:13] 18%. The rest of the Democrats are
[1:15] closely bunched further back.
[1:17] The poll was conducted between last
[1:19] Saturday and Tuesday. Hart holds his
[1:22] lead despite the fact that many
[1:23] Democrats here harbor strong negative
[1:26] feelings about him. I don't want to talk
[1:28] about polls.
[1:29] Polls are boring. I think it's name
[1:31] identification.
[1:33] I think it's the fact that
