[4:25] >> So proud to place in the nomination,

[4:28] John Kerry, to be the 44th president of

[4:32] these United States.

[4:36] And Senator Kerry sails triumphantly

[4:38] into Boston, prepared to accept, but his

[4:42] second

[4:44] shall speak first. Tonight, Senator John

[4:48] Edwards ready for his closeup.

[5:01] Campaign04,

[5:03] the Democratic National Convention

[5:06] from the Fleet Center in Boston. Here is

[5:09] Dan Rather.

[5:11] Good evening. This is the night the

[5:12] Democrats officially nominate John Kerry

[5:14] as their candidate for president.

[5:16] Senator Kerry will come here tomorrow to

[5:18] accept. Tonight, we hear from his

[5:21] running mate, John Edwards, the

[5:23] 51-year-old freshman senator from North

[5:25] Carolina who is getting himself in shape

[5:28] today for the run of his life. Edwards,

[5:30] a skilled trial lawyer, will argue John

[5:33] K's case tonight. He will try to erase

[5:36] any reasonable doubt among voters that

[5:39] Kerry should be the next president. The

[5:41] campaign put out the word it will not be

[5:43] an attack speech, but Senator Edwards

[5:46] will portray the election as a choice

[5:48] between the politics of hate and hope.

[5:51] Now, to lay out what's been happening

[5:53] here and what's ahead quickly, earlier

[5:56] this evening, Senator K's name was

[5:57] placed in nomination officially. Later

[5:59] tonight, after Senator Edwards speaks,

[6:01] the convention calls the role of states

[6:04] and officially confirms the Kerry

[6:06] nomination. Tomorrow, Edwards will be

[6:08] nominated as vice president. Then

[6:11] tomorrow night, the convention climax,

[6:13] Senator K's acceptance speech. But

[6:15] coming up in just a few minutes, John

[6:17] Edwards big moment in the national

[6:18] spotlight. Joining me to watch a veteran

[6:21] of 18 conventions, Republican, Democrat,

[6:24] independent, and wig, my colleague Bob

[6:26] Shiva. up.

[6:29] >> Glad to be here, Dan. You know, during

[6:31] the primaries, John Edwards was John K's

[6:34] main and toughest opponent, but tonight

[6:37] he becomes his chief salesman. Now, he's

[6:39] not going to take on President Bush by

[6:41] name. He is going to take those some

[6:43] very tough shots at the Republicans. We

[6:45] got a little preview of that today from

[6:47] his wife and his daughter.

[6:50] Politics has always been a joint venture

[6:52] for this family, and Kate and Elizabeth

[6:54] Edwards admit Edwards tried out part of

[6:56] tonight's speech on them, but not all of

[6:59] them.

[6:59] >> But on this speech, I've had uh very

[7:01] little to do with it. He I saw it an

[7:03] early stage, and I haven't seen it uh in

[7:05] about a week. So, I I'm I'm going to be

[7:08] as surprised as everybody else when I

[7:09] hear tonight.

[7:10] >> Okay.

[7:10] >> What would you like everybody to know

[7:11] about your father?

[7:14] um that he has the best heart of anyone

[7:17] I know and everything that I've heard

[7:19] him say throughout this campaign comes

[7:22] from the heart.

[7:24] >> This is Edwards.

[7:25] >> Um I think that he is uh you know I have

[7:29] a lot of things that I want to say but

[7:30] that that he's an incredibly decent

[7:32] person that civility is not a for him

[7:34] not a campaign tactic but a way of life.

[7:37] He understands that the way we move

[7:38] forward with people we uh even with

[7:41] people we with whom we disagree is to be

[7:43] civil and respect their the those

[7:45] positions and uh so when he's uh when he

[7:48] speaks about um about making certain

[7:50] that we put ranker behind us to solve

[7:52] the problems he he means that um

[7:56] as that's sort of his lifelong way. He's

[7:57] a very tough person. He's been through a

[8:00] lot and he has uh been tough not just

[8:03] for himself but in the cause of other

[8:05] people his entire life.

[8:07] >> And what about criticism there? You're

[8:09] going to take some hard shots. I mean

[8:11] that's part of this game. How how do you

[8:13] get do you ever get used to it?

[8:14] >> They're words. They don't bother us. I

[8:16] mean I know that sounds that sounds like

[8:18] it couldn't be. So we've been through a

[8:20] lot as a family and words are just

[8:22] words. You can't we can't be hurt by

[8:24] them.

[8:25] >> Okay.

[8:25] >> It's true. I mean I know my dad and I

[8:28] know what I think of them. Nothing's

[8:29] going to change that.

[8:31] >> Dan, I can't remember when Democrats

[8:33] have been more united than they are at

[8:36] this convention. They spent two days

[8:37] taking the Bush administration apart.

[8:40] But those were the preliminaries. Now we

[8:42] begin the main event when the two men at

[8:43] the top of this ticket have to make the

[8:46] case that they can do it better. Bob

[8:48] Shever, always great to be with you.

[8:50] >> Thanks.

[8:51] >> There's a growing belief this election

[8:52] may well be decided on the issue of

[8:54] national security. Over at the podium

[8:56] tonight, CBS's John Roberts reports.

[8:58] John Kerry is out to convince voters

[9:00] he's ready to be commander-in-chief and

[9:03] a better commander-in-chief than

[9:04] President Bush. John,

[9:06] >> Dan, and if you want to get an idea of

[9:07] just what a prominent place national

[9:09] security is going to have at this

[9:11] evening of the convention, all you have

[9:12] to do is look at the first substantive

[9:14] graph of John Edwards speech in which he

[9:17] talks all about John K's military

[9:19] record. Later on in the speech, he says,

[9:21] "The US military deserves a president, a

[9:24] commander-in-chief who has a deep

[9:26] personal knowledge and understands at a

[9:27] deeply personal level what the men and

[9:29] women of the military go through." But

[9:31] he wasn't the only person who's talking

[9:33] about this this evening. On stage right

[9:35] now, the former chairman of the Joint

[9:36] Chiefs of Staff, General John

[9:38] Shalakashes, who joined as well in a

[9:40] videotape tonight, 10 former generals

[9:43] and admirals who all came together

[9:45] saying, "We believe that John Kerry has

[9:47] been unfairly attacked for being less

[9:49] than resolute on the issue of national

[9:52] security and defending the country."

[9:54] John Shallakishi tonight will say that

[9:57] John Kerry would make a better

[9:58] commander-in-chief than President Bush.

[10:00] Now, of course, following all of this

[10:02] this week, Vice President Dick Cheney,

[10:04] who's been hitting back, saying,

[10:05] remember that John Kerry and John

[10:06] Edwards voted for the war, but they

[10:08] voted against the $87 billion to fund

[10:11] the war. The clear message that's coming

[10:13] from the Bush Cheney side of things is

[10:15] when it comes to John Kerry, you better

[10:17] watch this guy because he might not

[10:19] always be there to support you. And

[10:21] Kerry has a little bit of work to do to

[10:23] close the gap. While George Bush and

[10:24] John Ky are even on the issue of the

[10:27] Iraq war, there's still a 10-point split

[10:29] in the war on terror. So Dan, John Ky

[10:32] and John Edwards with a lot of work to

[10:33] do, not only at this convention, but

[10:36] going forward toward November. Dan John

[10:38] Roberts thanks our CBS News prime time

[10:40] coverage of the Democratic National

[10:42] Convention Road. Coming up, the man who

[10:44] would be vice president, Senator John

[10:46] Edwards. So sticking here with us.

[10:57] No. Uh,

[10:58] >> yes. I'd like to redeem my credit card

[11:00] miles. Uh, flight to Denver.

[11:01] >> Uh, no.

[11:02] >> LA.

[11:02] >> No.

[11:03] >> Fresno.

[11:03] >> Where?

[11:04] >> Fresno.

[11:04] >> No.

[11:06] >> I'll fly out Wednesday.

[11:07] >> That's going to be a no.

[11:08] >> Thursday.

[11:09] >> All blacked out.

[11:09] >> I'll take the red eye.

[11:10] >> No. No.
