[0:03] 2/3 of the delegates at this national
[0:05] convention were selected in presidential
[0:07] primaries.
[0:08] In the 23 primary states, more than 20
[0:12] million voted for Democratic candidates.
[0:14] A significant increase over 1968.
[0:18] These figures should make us ask
[0:20] ourselves,
[0:21] can we do it again in the big one in
[0:24] November?
[0:27] In rural areas,
[0:29] the new rules also brought out the
[0:31] voters.
[0:38] Many of you came here by way of the
[0:39] convention system.
[0:41] This precinct convention in Texas is in
[0:44] its way the prototype of all
[0:46] conventions.
[0:47] You did this from New England to the
[0:49] state of Washington.
[0:54] And that for the first time in the
[0:56] history of this state, we have written
[0:58] party rules. And in addition to that,

[1:03] party rules that give the rank and file
[1:06] people of Texas for the first time in
[1:08] the Democratic Party the chance to
[1:10] really show what their presidential
[1:12] preferences are at the grassroots level
[1:15] in a way that I think will have a big
[1:16] impact. Hope it will on the national
[1:18] nominating convention.
[1:20] The major difference between conventions
[1:22] was their size and the changing faces
[1:26] of our voters
[1:27] joining us in the selection of a
[1:29] presidential candidate.
[1:31] This is Clinton, Missouri. Our other
[1:33] secret weapon is right here in this room
[1:36] because this is the Democratic Party at
[1:40] work. This is a public meeting in Henry
[1:43] County. The door is still open even for
[1:45] latecomers. Any Democrat that walks in
[1:48] here, be he young or old,
[1:51] uh be he with short hair or long hair,
[1:54] uh be he male or female, can vote in
[1:57] this open convention. An
