[0:00] the former Texas Air National Guard

[0:02] officer who provided the documents to

[0:04] CBS News.

[0:05] >> She said that he was interested in

[0:06] talking to me and she gave me his

[0:08] number. Uh I called him. Uh he gave me

[0:10] some advice on how to respond to the

[0:12] Swiftboat smears against John Kerry. We

[0:15] talked 3 to four minutes. Uh the guard

[0:17] issues or documents never came up. Uh

[0:19] and that was the end of it.

[0:20] >> Mapes declined today to discuss the

[0:22] matter which will be investigated by an

[0:24] outside review panel. CBS News said in a

[0:27] statement, "It is obviously against CBS

[0:30] News standards to be associated with any

[0:32] political agenda. As to what actually

[0:34] happened here, it is one of many issues

[0:36] the independent review will be

[0:38] examining." Republicans saw the story as

[0:41] evidence that CBS News was coordinating

[0:43] with the Kerry campaign to attack the

[0:45] president. The chair of the Republican

[0:47] National Committee demanded answers.

[0:49] What was the nature of the conversation

[0:51] uh between various senior campaign

[0:53] adviserss for Senator Kerry and the

[0:55] person who apparently provided uh the

[0:58] documents? What was uh what was the uh

[1:01] agreements that they had with one

[1:03] another? What you know CBS carry

[1:05] campaign and uh and whoever provided the

[1:08] documents?

[1:08] >> Democrats insist it wasn't them and

[1:10] fired back.

[1:11] >> The Cary campaign had nothing to do uh

[1:13] with these documents. There is nothing

[1:15] to this story. And if there was

[1:17] something to this story, they wouldn't

[1:18] be afraid to debate me on that. Uh what

[1:20] this is is a gutless political attack.

[1:23] Innocent or not, a CBS News producers

[1:26] assistance in connecting a source with

[1:28] the Kerry campaign has at least the

[1:30] appearance of impropriy and becomes a

[1:32] political issue in a bitter campaign.

[1:34] Dan

[1:35] >> Bill Plant. Thanks. It now appears

[1:37] likely the US Senate will confirm

[1:39] Republican Congressman Peter Goss of

[1:42] Florida to be the new director of the

[1:44] Central Intelligence Agency. Goss, a

[1:46] former chairman of the House

[1:47] Intelligence Committee, won the

[1:49] endorsement today of the Senate

[1:50] Intelligence Committee. The vote was 12

[1:52] to four with three Democrats among the

[1:55] yes votes.

[1:56] >> The government is going ahead with a new

[1:58] screening program for airline

[2:00] passengers. The Transportation Security

[2:02] Administration said today it is ordering

[2:04] domestic airlines to turn over personal

[2:07] information about their passengers from

[2:09] names and addresses to meal requests.

[2:12] Passenger names are to be matched to

[2:14] names on a terrorist watch list. Coming

[2:17] up next on the CBS Evening News, big

[2:20] tobacco on trial in the biggest

[2:22] racketeering case ever. At stake,

[2:25] hundreds of billions of dollars. We'll

[2:27] give you the inside story. Then later,

[2:30] hooping cough. A vaccine practically

[2:32] eliminated it years ago. So why is it

[2:35] now making a comeback? We'll give you a

[2:42] CBS News honors fallen heroes. Dale

[2:46] Pansot loved hunting and fishing in his

[2:48] native Minnesota. He was a history buff,

[2:51] too, and hoped to become a teacher. As a

[2:53] child, he liked playing army. Even dug a

[2:56] foxhole in his backyard. Pansot was

[2:59] killed in Iraq in an ambush. His family

[3:02] will now put a flag pole in that foxhole

[3:04] to commemorate his commitment to

[3:07] America.
