[0:03] >> Good evening. This is the CBS Evening

[0:05] News. Dan Rather reporting. President

[0:07] Reagan insisted again today that

[0:08] secretly selling missiles to Iran was a

[0:10] good idea, that he has made no mistake,

[0:13] and he isn't going to fire anyone.

[0:16] Behind the scenes, there were scrambles

[0:18] to hold on to power by some, to take it

[1:01] over what steps the administration could

[1:03] take to get back on course. Reports

[1:05] yesterday suggested long-time California

[1:07] supporters like former Interior

[1:09] Secretary William Clark and Attorney

[1:11] General Ed Meese were pushing for a

[1:13] staff shakeup, wanting to dump Chief of

[1:15] Staff Donald Regan, Secretary of State

[1:17] George Shultz, and National Security

[1:19] Advisor John Poindexter.

[1:21] Sources close to First Lady Nancy Reagan

[1:23] also describe her as upset and angry.
