[0:06] It's what you can't see that can kill

[0:08] you. These Marines are trying to secure

[0:10] the area around Fallujah, searching with

[0:12] metal detectors for explosives buried

[0:14] underground. Sometimes their weapons

[0:17] hidden by insurgents stocking up for the

[0:19] battle to come. Sometimes they're IEDs,

[0:23] improvised explosive devices wired and

[0:26] watched by a bomber sitting out of sight

[0:28] with his finger on the detonator.

[0:31] >> Oh,

[0:34] >> it was supposed to be a routine patrol

[0:36] in the farmland around Fallujah. As we

[0:39] rolled along between the irrigation

[0:40] ditches, suddenly an IED went off. This

[0:43] is the crater that it made. The soldiers

[0:45] say probably a buried mortar round.

[0:48] >> I think it may be a blast injury. I

[0:50] think it might have just shook him up.

[0:51] Right now, he's ble He's bleeding. All

[0:53] right, breathing. All right, there's no

[0:55] bleeding. We got to get him out of here

[0:56] so I can do a full assessment. This man

[0:59] was saved by the armor of the vehicles

[1:01] they ride in. It's

[1:02] >> just anger. Anger. That's all I can

[1:05] think of. I just really want to find the

[1:07] person who did it. As these Marines

[1:09] hurried to get their injured comrade to

[1:11] the hospital on nearby military base

[1:14] just a few miles away, another patrol

[1:16] from the same company was suddenly

[1:18] attacked by a suicide bomber.

[1:20] >> The vehicle came in from the front and

[1:23] swerved around the first vehicle that

[1:24] was first LED that was in front of us

[1:26] and it just came right out towards us.

[1:28] >> The bomber crashed into the front of the

[1:30] Marine's armored vehicle and before

[1:32] anyone could react, his car exploded.

[1:35] just seeing chunks of flesh laying on

[1:37] the ground and um you know my first

[1:39] reaction was I thought that it was you

[1:41] know one of us.

[1:42] >> Miraculously no Marines from this

[1:44] company were killed today but they are

[1:46] frustrated. They would rather risk their

[1:48] lives they say fighting in the battle

[1:50] for Fallujah than waiting for it to

[1:52] begin. Elizabeth Palmer, CBS News with

[1:55] the Marines near Fallujah.
